    1. [OHJEFFER] Hamilton Family of Knox Twp
    2. John Frank Hamilton married Elizabeth Arnold in Jefferson Co., Ohio sometime during the 1860's. I believe they had three sons, then Elizabeth died and John remarried. The boys were brought back to Ohio from Iowa or Missouri after Elizabeth's death and raised by Elizabeth's family. I have found a death certificate for (1) George Hamilton, b. 1863, d. 1917. Possible family of wife Ellen and children Jennie, John, Ethel and Clarence in Knox Twp., Jefferson Co., Ohio. Also an obit for (2) Frank Hamilton, b. 1870 in Missouri, d. 1944 in Columbiana Co., Ohio. Never married. On the 1930 census (3) John Hamilton of Uhrichville, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, possible wife Margaret and daughter Ethel Dutton. Also possible children from Frank's second marriage; Clarence of Wellsville, Ohio, Joseph of Oklahoma and Thomas of Kansas. Would really like help confirming members of this family. 3. My ancestor Philip CARREL died in December 1813 while in the army, probably of typhus. He had enlisted in the regular army in the spring of 1813 for 5 years. He left a widow and nine small children in the Jefferson/Harrison/Carroll county area. Records in the Jefferson County Courthouse states that the widow relinquished her rights to administer her husband's estate (she could neither read nor write), and the court appointed Ephraim Cellars as administrator. Also later the children, all minors, were in court at Steubenville choosing a legal guardian who was James Torrence. NARA cannot find any widow's pension application but did find a Certificate for Bounty Land Warrant No. 715 with the guardian James Torrence (Tarrance) as Warrantee, dated 1816, and listed Philip Carroll as the soldier. Also that the Bounty Land was relinquished in lieu of 5-years half-pay. Philip's regular army service records gives his death date and adds a note "See Pension Case & Book 600". Aside from going back to NARA, can anyone say what that note means? Thank you for your attention, Eric Olson

    1. [OHJEFFER] Browning
    2. Candice Buchanan
    3. Rev. Jeremiah Browning and his wife Catherine, I am told, lived and worked in the Jefferson County area. Rev. Browning was a Methodist preacher. He must have died by 1860 because in the 1860 and 1870 censuses his wife is living with her daughter in Greene County, PA. The couple had at least one daughter, Rebecca (b. 29 January 1828) who married John Buchanan, my gr-gr-gr-granduncle. Rebecca's obituary in the "Waynesburg Republican" of Waynesburg, Greene County, PA, 17 November 1880, page 3, column 4, states: "Being a descendant of good old Methodist stock -- her father Rev. Browning, being one of the pioneer preachers of Eastern Ohio -- of which church she was a member..." John Buchanan's brother, David, also married a Browning girl who is likely a sister to Rebecca. Rachel (Browning) Buchanan died young on 2 June 1847, less than a year after her marriage on 13 August 1846. Family tradition says she is buried in St. John's Episcopal Church Cem., Cross Creek Township, Jefferson County, OH -- I believe. This could be incorrect, but it is believed that she was brought back to Jefferson County for burial at her father's church, this may not be the right church though. Any help is greatly appreciated. I would like to learn anything I can about this family. Thanks, Candice http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~candicelynnb/ __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
