    3. Here are the names fromthe Empire Bicentennial Anniv. book 1776-1976 In the early 1700's settlers were already arriving and settling up and down the Ohio River Valley. The early settlers came mostly from New England of Scotch-Irish and German descent. From the East to the West came a flow of settlers using the waterway of the Ohio River as their chief means of transportation. One of these early settlers was Lewis K. McCoy who bought a section of land, at the mouth of Jeremy's Run, namingt it "Stumptown"because the grove of maple trees had been cut down leaving an area of tree stumps. Stumptown's location would be north of the present route 152. The parcel of land lying south of route 152 was bought by a Scotchman, Alexander Stewart. At the present time this section of land is owned by 84 Lumber Co. The Village of Empire is located on McCoy's land. This little settlement at the mouth of Jeremy's Run grew and prospered because of its busy and convenient water transportationof the Ohio River. The village has had so many names. 1. Stumptown,2. Shanghai, Olive City,(McCoy changed the name of Shanghai to Olive City in honor of his youngest daughter.) Soon after the naming of Olive City, McCoy laid out the town into lots 50X100 ft and streets 60 ft wide. Then it was called McCoy's Station, then Empire City and last of all Empire.

    3. By doing a google.com search I came up with the following site, which includes the name McCoy's Station. I didn't bother to read it, but it may answer your question. Farms were farms in Ohio, and not called or referred to as Stations. That was usually reserved for the RR. 2. I was in Colorado doing research and found copies of marriage records at the Denver Public Library. The Denver Library is in downtown Denver, next door to the Historical Society and a couple of blocks from the State Archives. The collections are terrific and well worth a look or a stop of a couple of days. Besides Colorado the Library has a heavy collection of Oklahoma and New Mexico. Below is what I found at the Denver Public Library on Microfilm under State of Colorado, Division of Vital Statistics, Marriage Record Report: McCAUSLAND, Anna A m Carn N Gleason 3/Feb 1897 Kiowa, Elbert Co., CO. 2. William and Sarah (COLLIER) JONES first show up in the 1850 census in Knox Township, Holmes Co., OH., as well as his parents John and Susan (FERRALL) JONES. John's parents, John and Anna JONES show up in Smithfield, Jefferson Co., OH between the years of 1815-1829 when they lived there prior to them moving on to Jefferson Co., OH. Would like to share JONES information, that would be great. I have yet to discover William JONES middle name, which would most likely give me additional information on him. Anxious to hear from another JONES descendant. Linda

    3. Brian - See that you are looking at Maxwells. Do you happen to recognize the name Isabelle Maxwell. She married one of my relatives, an Andrew Carman, in late 1830's, I believe. I don't yet know what happened to Andrew, but I later find Isabelle living with Maxwell relatives up through the 1870 Census. Ring any bells from your research? Any help appreciated? 1. [OHJEFFER] James TORRENCE or TARRANCE, Legal Guardian of CARREL or CARROLL children, 1818
    2. Eric
    3. James TORRENCE/TARRANCE and CARREL/CARROLL in Jefferson County, Ohio, 1818. Philip CARREL/CARROLL of the Jefferson County, Ohio area (Jefferson, Harrison and/or Carroll Counties) died intestate 10 December 1813 probably while serving at Fort Detroit with Captain Stanton Sholes' Company, Regular U.S. Army, 2nd Division Artillery. He left his Widow Mary Carrel and nine minor children in Jefferson County. Five years later, in 1818, the Court in Steubenville appointed a James Tarrance of Jefferson County as legal guardian of these children. The guardian James Tarrance somehow became the Warrantee of Bounty Land Certificate # 715, with Philip Carrel listed as the soldier, and later surrendered this Bounty Land for 5 years half-pay for Philip, under the Act of April 16, 1816, presumably for the benefit of the Carrel children and Widow. I believe James Tarrance was one of the original Elders of Two Ridge Presbyterian Church, near Wintersville? Also an Ephraim Cellars was appointed as Estate Administrator for Philip Carrel's Estate in 1814, and it is certain that he was one of the founders of Two Ridge Presbyterian Church, according to Doyle, etc. My question is to this list is, does anyone have any information about the Carrel/Carroll family or of James Tarrance or Torrence in Jefferson County in the early 1800s? I would appreciate even the smallest clue, and any connection to the Two Ridge Presbyterian Church. Thank you for your attention, Eric Olson Seattle

    3. Steven and others interested in Tombstone inscriptions might be interested in a current project here in Jefferson County: We are currently (some of the Jefferson County Chapter, OGS members) working to locate, clean and extract tombstone inscriptions. I have seen several cemeteries throughout the county online, but I must warn you, I have found MANY errors and many incomplete cemeteries listed as read and they aren't. Please proceed with caution as when I compare my records thus far, many are missing! Please remember that Esther Powell has a tombstone inscription publication she did back in the 60's and she did an outstanding job without computers, a car, etc. BUT- As I and others read those SAME cemeteries (and many others that weren't included in Jefferson County Tombstone Inscription book) many stones weren't read and many weren't completely read. When the chapter finishes reading and recording, it will be the MOST complete all in one publication for Cemeteries, histories of churches and cemeteries, precise and clear directions to cemeteries and will include to the best of our ability MANY small private cemeteries that have NEVER been found and read before. Website to find out more about the project and updates can be found at: www.jeffcochapter.com Flora ----- Original Message ----- From: <SJBUNKAY@aol.com> To: <OHJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 25, 2003 07:16 AM Subject: [OHJEFFER] Cemetry Transcriptions > Hi there > > Can anyone tell me if there are transcriptions for cemetrys in Smithfield Twp > online please.
