    1. [OHJEFFER] Milligans of Ireland
    2. Shirley Milligan
    3. tent-Type: text/plain; I notice that quite a few of Jefferson County "old timers" are born in Ireland. Has anyone made a study of the "old timers" from Ireland? My ancestor Robert Milligan lived in Jefferson County and also in Guernsey County too (where he died after 1850) Now I'm not sure if he was living in the same house and the county lines changed, or if he sold out and moved to Guernsey County. Robert had several sons, one of which was Thomas of Guernsey County Ohio. 1. Re: [OHJEFFER] correct subject in the subject slot
    2. I agree with Sandra - sometimes when I am in a hurry, I will skim my subject lines looking for something of interest to read, so there's a better chance of my reading a particular email. Also, when I have saved one and want to go back and read it again, it makes it easier to identify the particular email I am searching for. In a message dated 10/23/2003 12:07:31 AM Central Daylight Time, ferg@ntelos.net writes: I have names that have more than one spelling, and if you type in just one, you only get posts with that one spelling....easier to browse the subjects than to type in 10 spellings of the same name. Besides, I like to brouse, looking for anything of interest, and what is in the subject slot if most important....if it didn't matter why have a subject slot , or bother to put in a subject at all?

    3. Regarding Bucy and other spellings listed, my gggrandmother was Mary Jane Buicy or Buecy (hard to read in the copy of the obit that I have). She was born in 1825 and was married to my gggrandfather Samuel Ashby born 1820. They lived in Rush Run. I hope this may help someone and if you think that this person might be part of your clan, please let me know either privately or through the group. I realize that in helping one, we may help others too. 1. [OHJEFFER] BABB, BELL, NORRIS, LEWIS
    2. Genealogy Addict
    3. I'm primarily researching Peter Babb Jr. born October 18, 1769 in Frederick County, Virginia - died April 28, 1831 in Belmont County, Ohio. He is buried in the Friends Burying Ground - Short Creek Meeting House - Jefferson County. He first married Jane Bell November 9, 1797 in Frederick County, Virginia and second married Elizabeth Norris October 30, 1817 in Belmont County, Ohio. Jane died in Belmont County as far as I know. I don't know where or when Elizabeth died or where she is buried. Jane is supposed to be buried in the same cemetery as Peter. I haven't found headstones for either. Peter's son Aaron is my husband's direct ancestor and he married Martha Lewis August 24, 1848 in Jefferson County, Ohio. They are both buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Pleasant Grove, Colerain Twp, Belmont County, Ohio. Aaron was living with a Charles M. Burk in Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio on the 1850 census. He then is in Belmont County until his death. Any information on this line - including info on the ancestry of Martha Lewis and Elizabeth Norris and Jane Bell would be very much appreciated. A bit more about Peter: From "HISTORY OF WESTERN OHIO AND AUGLAIZE COUNTY WITH ILLUSTRATIONS AND BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF PIONEERS AND PROMINENT PUBLIC MEN" By C. W. Williamson Columbus, Ohio Press of W. M. Linn & Sons 1905 Belmont, Jefferson Counties, Chapter XXI, History of the Towns and Townships of Belmont County" Page 387 "PLEASANT GROVE" ............."Peter Babb came to this settlement about the year 1800, and purchased section 27, southwest of the present site of Pleasant Grove. He distinguished himself as a hunter and slayer of bears, wolves and other wild animals. He killed the last black wolf that was known to be slain in this township, in the year 1810. When he found the den he pinched the cubs' ears; the cries of the young brought the old ones to the entrance of the den and he shot them as they were about to enter." ************************************** BABB FAMILIES OF AMERICA by Jean A. Sargent - Page 87: "PETER, JR. (5) BABB, son of PETER (4) and Mary (Bowen), b. 18 Oct 1769, mar. Jane Bell, 9 Nov 1797, dau of James and Eleanor Bell, Frederick Co., VA. JANE was b. 18, 5th, 1774 and d. 29 Jul 1817 aged 43-2-11. PETER died 28 April 1837 aged sixty-seven years, six months & ten days; they are both buried in Friends Burying Ground, Shortcreek Meeting House, Belmont Co., OH. (Balderston Bible records) They had 7 children." "PETER mar. 2nd Elizabeth Norris 30 Oct 1817 in Belmont Co., OH, and they had 6 children. She was probably dau of Thomas and Elizabeth Norris who lived in area. She was named in his will, written 6 Feb 1837. PETER named his sons in his will but not the daughters. However, Jon. Balderston was named Executor with Absalom Hoge, and will was witnessed by Levi Wells and Babb Mercer (nephew of PETER). Jonathan Balderston was husband of oldest dau ELIZABETH." "Belmont Co., OH land records show that PETER (4) gave/sold to PETER, JR. on 22 Oct 1803 160 acres (Vol. A, p. 272) worth $640. In his will he indicates that he gave the land, but the land records show a price. This was in Section 27, in Mount Pleasant Township, which was founded ca 1800 and was settled by Friends from various locations. Mount Pleasant became known as the literary center of eastern Ohio as periodicals, magazines and books began to be published there. A Friends Boarding School was erected in 1837, and the area attracted persons interested in a higher realm of mental and spiritual development. At the same time a woolen factory, tannery, meat market, flouring mill, and the first factory for the weaving of silk in the U.S. began there in 1840." "At the same time Pleasant Grove was known as "Hole in the Ground". This odd named referred to a coal mine in the area. PETER BABB was noted as a hunter and slayer of bears, wolves, and other wild animals. His inventory shows many farming tools and farm animals and debts owed to him." "Belmont Co., OH Land Records show that PETER sold various tracts of Section 27 to his sons and others in 1826 and 1827. He left the home plantation to wife ELIZABETH." ************************ I haven't spent as much time researching these lines as I'd like to - but I chip away at them when I can.
