    1. Re: [OHJEFFER] Surnames For Jefferson County, Ohio
    2. Hi Sharen, My gggdpts Stiles & Drusilla GLADDEN WINTERS were b & m in Wintersville. Drusilla b 1824, was dau of James & Hannah DICKEY GLADDEN. In 1826 James purchased land in Green Twp, Ashland (Richland) Co OH from Joseph GLADDEN, Solomon GLADDEN jp. James is not mentioned in Joseph GLADDEN's will. Trying to prove James b 1794 PA was son of Joseph. A number of lists and Richland Co bio says that he was. Solomon is not listed either except that his lands adjoin land in monroe Twp Richland Co OH that Joseph willed to his son William. Stiles b 8Nov1819, was son of Isaiah (jr) & Elizabeth BLACK WINTERS. In 1820 census, Island Creek, Jeff OH Isaiah Jr with 1 son under 10 was enumerated after David GLADDEN. 1856 land map shows David's land was located NW of Two Ridge Pres Ch on road to Richmond. Estates of Willaim & Isaiah Sr WINTERS were on this rd ( rte 43) but in Wintersville. William &Martha REX WINTERS & son Ross, Joseph GLADDEN & David & Elizabeth WINTERS GLADDEN bu Two Ridge cem behind church. 1800 c Green Co PA shows Isaiah Jr with 1 son under 10 , Your William with no sons & Abraham with 3-4 sons, John & Issac at home with Isaiah Sr & Rhoda (UNKNOWN). Other son Benjaman stayed in Washington Co when others removed to Jeff Co OH. Some where I saw that William & Martha REX WINTERS had 7 sons but I can only find Ross & 3-4 others. I think that my Isaiah (Jr) was son of Isaiah (sr) & Catherine FREDERICK WINTERS of Island Creek Twp. Origonal Isaiah & Rhoda (unknown) WINTERS were in Cross Creek Twp. I have collected work ups on Benjaman, Abraham & Isaiah Jr. Would like to get William, John & Isaac's. Philip A. (Mike) WINTERS

    1. [OHJEFFER] Swiss-German Roots? 727 Souls recommitted to the earth from the Voegtly Church Cemetery, North Side, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA (abstract from Pittsburgh Post Gazette)
    2. Julia A. (Heaton) Krutilla
    3. New burial site for 727 souls will be blessed I-279 excavation and archaeological tests finally over Tuesday, October 28, 2003 By Patricia Lowry, Post-Gazette Architecture Critic At 10 o'clock this morning, in an old Swiss-German cemetery at the edge of a plateau overlooking the Allegheny River, the remains of 727 people will be recommitted to the earth. It has been well over a century since their bodies were buried, 16 years since they were discovered under a North Side church parking lot, a year since they were reinterred at Troy Hill's Voegtly Cemetery. Since 1987, they have traveled from their not-so-final resting place to the GAI Consultants archaeology lab in Monroeville and to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Some of their teeth and bone marrow was sent to England for DNA analysis. The church burial records, written in archaic German script, were deteriorated and illegible, and there were no other written records or maps identifying the graveyard. Clearly the cemetery had never been moved. But why had the church eliminated all trace of it from the face of the Earth? . . . . There is no evidence that church members knew of the cemetery disturbance in 1911. Exactly how and why the cemetery was neglected and abandoned over the next 40 years was never determined, but old urban church cemeteries traditionally have been vulnerable in the competition for land. By 1911, the Voegtly Church congregation had assimilated to a point where it was beginning to lose its institutional memory. Services in English were introduced in 1913, and by 1926 Voegtly Church had been renamed the Pilgrim Evangelical Church of Pittsburgh. In 1950, the old cemetery, where there had been no burials for almost a century, was paved and graveled. . . . . 3. I have had several members of the list ask me to give the following information concerning a new publication on this list: "Ohio's Founding Fathers" Author, Fred J. Milligan (lives in Westerville, OH and practices law there) 318 pages which can be purchased online at Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble. You can also call 877-823-9235 to order the book in paperback or hardback copy. The paperback is $23.95.. Members of the Jefferson County Chapter, OGS will receive a 25% discount on the purchase of this book- with several Jefferson County Founding Father's included in its text! (JCC OGS website concerning membership is at: www.jeffcochapter.com ) An explanation of the Seven Ranges begins Chapter 6, Jefferson County, Ohio- followed by a history of the county. Surnames included are as follows: (Jeff. Co. chapter only) Bezeleel Wells (born 28 Jan 1783, Baltimore MD) John Milligan (born 20 May 1762, Cecil Co, MD) Nathan Updegraff (born 3 Sep 1750, York Co, PA) George Humphrey (born 19 Dec 1749, Northern Ireland) Rudolph Bair (born 1765, Northampton Co., PA) James Pritchard (born 1 Nov 1763, Fredrick Co., MD) This book has "plenty of footnotes and cross references" that would prove helpful with researching ancestors from Ohio and is broken up county by county. A special note: Fred Milligan has been so kind to donate several copies of his latest book to local research repositories in Jefferson County. He also plans to do an interview for the local newspaper, The Herald Star at which time the interview will cover the following and more: 1802 Convention- The actual men from Jefferson County who helped make Ohio a State. Jefferson County was tied with Ross County, OH for the largest delegates. Jefferson County had more delegates then Washington County, Ohio (which was the first county established !). When this article runs in the local newspaper, I will forward the newspaper website and date so that ALL can read the article. I am sure it will be very interesting and a way to "complete our State bicentennial Celebration!" Flora

    2. Actually I am looking for information on his son, Samuel T. Hartman. He may have been a minister. Samuel T. married an Elizabeth Allison in 1872 in Carroll Co. Ohio. Jacob may have been the son of Solomon and Sarah Saltsman Hartman. Jacob married Catherine Groves, daughter of Peter Groves and Sarah Swickard. Jacob and Catherine died about four years apart. He in 1854 and she in 1858. Both are buried at the Zion ME Cemetery in Jefferson Co. They had three sons: 1) George Washington Hartman and wife Sarah Hartley were married in Richland Co. Wisconsin and raised their family there. 2) William Swasey Hartman died in 1870 and is buried at Zion Cemetery with his parents. 3) Samuel T. Hartman. And here I have struck out. Sam is four years old on the 1850 census, born Ohio. I know that he is not the Samuel living in Huron Co., Ohio in 1920. As a minister he could have traveled anywhere, but I have not found him.
