I agree Wilma. She helped me SO much and I've found family I had given up on. Not everyone is willing to take the time to help people and I wanted to let her know how much i appreciated her help and what i found. I know she'll be pleased. Do you have her email address Wilma, in case she doesn't see this on the list? I don't know where I put it (a senior moment) and would hate not to let her know. http://publications.ohiohistory.org/ohstemplate.cfm?action=search The above is the address for the search engine for the online documents section of Pathfinders of Jefferson County and other OHSHS information. When they OCR'd it, they left alot of errors, and it does include the items in volume 8 that are corrected from volume 6 - which is the W.H. Hunter Document, page 132-260 that I have indexed. It is full of names. There seems to be a great deal of information in these documents, but kind of cumbersome. The website I found is actually for "Ohio History, Scholarly Journal of the Ohio Historical Society." http://www.ohiohistory.org/ohstemplate.cfm/ I then went down to :Browse by volume on the left side of the page. You can access many volumes. I checked both Vol. 6 and Vol. 8 which gives corrections for Vol. 6 including full names of many settlers. I did not try the indexes again but that was one of the options on the site. Good luck. Nancy Smith

Dear Listmembers, Recently, I was fortunate enough to receive a photocopy of this paper, which has received alot of attention lately, particularly on the Jefferson County list. It has a great deal of information in it, although I would guess it will only send you to the sources, not provide the "smoking gun" many of us are looking for - in most cases. Much of this information relates to OLD JEFFERSON COUNTY, before Harrison, Belmont, Carroll, etc. were split off. I have access to some "resources" and since there was only a paper copy of an index in the Schiappa library, I took it upon myself to create a name index for this document, as well as to create a "clean" copy of the document text.. This index is my original work, I have never seen the index the in the Schiappa Library, and is intended as an additional tool. This is not a commercial venture, and the time and resources I have invested in doing this are a small repayment of the many kindnesses that have been done for me over the years as an amateur genealogist. It is a large computer file, so it would be cumbersome to e-mail, However, you have a couple of choices: 1. I will send you the package by regular mail. It consists of the PDF document on a CD, which is searchable, and indexed. With this package, I will automatically send a hard copy of the booklet, and index which runs to some 170 pages. The cost for mailing and copys is $11.00. You can pay me by PayPal, or just send a check to: JOHN LINDSAY P.O. Box 17 Hartland, WI 53029 Make sure you include your mail address. 2. You can download the document from the Ohio page of my website, the LOST LINDSAYS OF OHIO. If you do so, please donate a small amount (or a large amount) to one of the county sponsors of the websites we use in Eastern Ohio. To download click here http://www.wardjames.com/LINDSAYOHIO.html then click on the filename, PATHFINDERS.pdf the download should begin right away. It took about 10 seconds on my speedy delivery hookup. THE INDEX IN THIS BOOKLET IS COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL - This is to keep some moron from stealing my work, copying it and selling it on EBAY. This is also why it is free to you as a download. We will be sending a copy to the Cadiz Library, the Schiappa Library, and to the Belmont County Genealogical Society Library. This copy will be free to the library, and they are free to print additional hard copies for their use or circulation, They will also receive a copy of the CD with the paper and index on it. They are free to make copies of the CD and circulate that as they see fit. This is intended to be distributed to as many as can use it for free, with the courtesy that everyone gets reimbursed for their expenses. We also expect to have a place name index ready after the first of the year. This too, will be free, although the CD serves that purpose to some degree now, in that it is searchable. Thanks to all for your help. John Lindsay

GLADDEN family researchers in Jefferson County, OH may be interested in the following article. You have a likelihood of being related to Past First Lady, Barbara Pierce BUSH, as well as President 41 & 43! This old article was featured in the Jefferson County Lines Newsletter. ---------- Past First Lady, BARBARA PIERCE BUSH and her Jefferson County Roots Research by Julia A. Krutilla As residents of the Ohio Valley which prospered from the Industrial Revolution of the 20th Century, we often overlook the importance as it opened it's doors to land development in 1797. JEFFERSON CO., OH has many politicians and prominent citizens with roots in our county. The 28th U. S. President, Woodrow WILSON, and Abraham LINCOLN's Secretary of War - Edwin M. STANTON, to name a just a couple. But how many of you realize that our past 1st Lady, Barbara PIERCE BUSH is another individual to add to this list with a local Revolutionary Ancestor as well? She has two sets of 4th great grandparents who purchased adjoining land in Island Creek Twp. in 1799. One set of ancestors are Mose COE & wife, Sarah HOWELL who owned land in both Washington Co., PA & Island Creek, Jefferson Co., OH. Their known children mentioned in Mose's 1813 will - include Benjamin, Moses, Phillip, Daniel, Esther, Jennet, Mary and Sarah. An interesting line in his will hints at problems with his son-in-law and states, "bequeathed to Esther's children . . .. . . with her having the use of it so that Daniel CRAINE can not get any of it". Moses and Sarah spent their later years in the homes of their married children. And more importantly, Mose COE is listed in the Centennial Edition DAR Patriots Index, as an Ensign in the PA Line. Other COE Veterans of Western PA listed include Benj., Ebenezer, & Stephen. The "20th Century History of Steubenville and Jefferson Co., OH" mentions a Benjamin COE who tenderly cared for a wounded Confederate Soldier, by the name of W. G. PAGE during MORGAN's raid through Jefferson Co. in the summer of 1863. After the soldier recovered under Benjamin's care, he took the oath of allegiance for the North. Barbara's other early set of pioneer ancestors in Jefferson Co., OH were Joseph & Rebecca GLADDEN. Joseph died in 1833 and is buried at Two Ridge Cemetery. This cemetery is just west of Wintersville, near junction of St. Rd 43 and 646. We know that Rebecca outlived him as she is mentioned in his 1833 will, and assume she is buried in an unmarked grave next to Joseph. Their children - Madison, Joseph, the Rev. Aaron, William, Solomon, David, John, Elizabeth, wife of Samuel ADAMS, Hannah CUNNINGHAM, Mary COE, Drusilla CASSELLI, and Lodema are all named in Joseph GLADDEN's will. The children and ancestors of Barbara BUSH's from these two families were Mary GLADDEN born in Jeff. Co., OH in 1804, and Daniel COE born Wash. Co., PA in 1801. Daniel followed the old custom of marrying the girl next door in Island Creek! And soon after their marriage in 1822, they moved to Allen Twp., Union Co., OH where they lived out their years. Daniel died in 1851 at the young age of 50, and Mary out living him by 42 years and passing over in 1893 at the age of 89. The lineage to Barbara PIERCE BUSH: are - Daniel & Mary COE's daughter, Sarah who married John W. ROBINSON. Sarah & John's son, James E. ROBINSON married Lulu FLICKINGER. James and Lulu's daughter, Pauline married Marvin PIERCE, who were the parents of Barbara PIERCE BUSH.
I believe the Pathfinders is available on a inter-loan bases. I would STRONGLY suggest those interested in more than just a "surname alone" try to check at their local public libraries for a copy of the book. It has alot of information and can "put one back in time" when the county (southern portion) was first settled, and help to understand what our pioneer ancestors had to deal with!
