Any marriages for John b/abt 1800, Joseph b/1824, William Bates b/1847 GARRETSON Many thanks. Audrey
Forgot to mention the Jefferson County Chapter OGS Marriage Book also contains marriages found in early deed books
Dear Janice G. Donley, Holder of Information on Early Marriages of Jefferson County, Ohio, and List Members, Having read several requests for early marriages of Jefferson County, Ohio, I have decided to weigh in. If you would check on any CRITSER/KRITZER or COOPER marriage records, I would be most appreciative. Thank you for your kindness. Henry Critser lived in Brooke County, [West] Virginia in the early 1800's, near New Manchester, which is in Hancock County today. From his will, I have learned that Henry Critser had sons Peter and John. Peter Critser died in Jefferson County, Ohio in 1839. Peter Critser's son Samuel Critser removed to Greenup County, Kentucky and married Rebecca Douglas Barney, 29 Oct 1841. I have not been able to trace John Critser yet. Among Henry Critser's daughters was Charity, who married in Jefferson County, Ohio in 1825. Henry's oldest daughter Nancy married George Wikoff in Brooke County, [West] Virginia, 31 Dec 1818. For these reasons, I am exploring whether more of Henry Critser's daughters married in Jefferson County. Their names were Hannah, Kitty, Leah, Mary, Sarah and Agness. As for Cooper marriages, it is essential in my research that I check the Coopers wherever I find Critsers, because of their possible connections. My third-great grandfather William Cooper married Martha Ann Barney, 6 May 1846, in Greenup County, Kentucky. Martha Ann Barney was a stepdaughter of Samuel Critser. Therefore, I am searching for the pre-1846 residence of William Cooper and his parents. Again, thank you for your help. Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio
Thought I might explain why Jefferson County has two early marriage books. Historical Society sells Early marriages up to 1838 has no Volume and Page #. It covers up to Volumes 1-4 of actual marriage books Jefferson County Chapter OGS Early marriages up to 1820 has Volume and page numbers and also found a few that was missed. Covers Vol. 1 and most of Vol. 2

Cooper: I wanted to let you know that I have in my notes, Leah CRITZER marrying Cornelius WYCOFF; 20 Feb 1810. (from The Wyckoff Family in America, Third Edition, Vol. 1; I don't have the names of Leah's parents, but Cornelius was born in Hancock Co., (W)VA and died in Ross Twp., Jefferson Co.,OH. It looks like this may be your Henry's daughter, or at the very least, a clue worth investigating. I am descended from Cornelius and Leah's son, Levi. Hollie Henke Navarre, OH holliefrog@aol.com
Hi Karen, There was a store in Hammondsville, Ohio in the early 1900's that was run by Billy McConnell. My aunt who was born about 1900 always referred to him as "Old Billy Mcconnell." Don't know much more except that his wife started some kind of church in her house. And "Old Billy" removed warts from my mother's hand around 1915 or so by rubbing a potato over them and saying some words. Jan
I'm curious to know if by chance you are the son of or are related to Lloyd and Pat Cooper who live in Raceland, Ky. Greenup Co. Ky.?
That might explain why I didn't find more marriages for the Lowe people. James Lowe was married to Elizabeth Bates in Jefferson Co about 1828/9. I found very little Bates info in the whole county. I wanted a David Lowe and Anna Eller, who were married just ahead of that. I don't suppose Opal would check?? Pretty please! And thank you for your efforts. I do checkups for a couple other areas and I get such a kick out of helping. Sure beats having to write letters. June Smith BoJu2325@ix.netcom.com I saw Opal Conn's reply to you and thought maybe I'd flipped out. I rechecked and found my book was nothing like hers. I emailed Opal and she replied that there are two Early Marriage Books out there. One by the JeffCo O.G.S. and one by the JeffCo O.H.S. She says mine must be the O.G.S. one. The O.H.S. is many more pages and obviously has many more entries. Glad Opal responded so you got your info. I apologize for my inferior book. http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm
yes, it is archived. you can access this at the Jefferson County home page on the web (sorry, don't have the URL handy...do a search engine, it'll turn up) >Is there an obituary for Captain John Shouse, buried Steubenville Union >Cemetery, Steubenville, Ohio? would he be related to the Shouses who built ships along the Ohio River, in the early-mid 1800's? this would be in Allegheny County PA, near the border of Beaver County, on the south bank, the area used to be called 'Shousetown' but today appears on maps as Glenwillard. Hi, The mailing list is archived. It can be accessed at http://www.geocities.com/heartland/1261 Scroll down the page a little ways and there is a bar that you can use to access the archives. Another question or two or more. Is the mailing list archived? And if so, how do I get into it? Is there an obituary for Captain John Shouse, buried Steubenville Union Cemetery, Steubenville, Ohio? I believe he was a steamboat captain living in Steubenville. He died in 1894. Could someone look it up for me? Also, any early history of Newburgh, later name Sloan's Station, now Toronto, in Jefferson Co., Ohio, would be of interest to me. Was it a steamboat landing? Any help on this would be very much appreciated. Sue
Mitch, Only Wise is: Jacob Wise married Mary Friend Feb. 25, 1806 Bk. 1, pg. 59 Jan
Does your marriage book have a George Wise or any other Wise? I don't have a wife's name. Mitch Janice G. Donley wrote: > Kathy, > The Jefferson County Early Marriages is from 1798 - 1820 so doesn't cover > your time period. Sorry,Jan
Hi, I'm new to the list. Karen Carlyle suggested that I subscribe to the list because some of the members have copies of Tombstone Inscription books for Jefferson Co. I'm researching my McConnell ancestors. I'm looking for the burial place & dates for Jane McConnell. Does anyone have access to this info & would be willing to do a lookup for me? This is what I know about them: James McConnel & Jane (?) had at least 7 known children. James #3, Charles, John M., Margaret, Robert, Wesley, Samuel. They were married abt 1826 in County Donegal, Ireland, she d. may 22 1868 in Knox twp Jefferson co, oh at age of 78. (b. 1790?) Hi, This is not my line. It is pretty complicated, however, my husband was adopted so his real family name is Kinney.
