Hello, I've been researching the DeGarmo surname for 25 years, and I have run across several Bell family members who married into the DeGarmo family. They all seemed to have lived in or around Jefferson County, Ohio. Yesterday I received an e-mail from a lady who said she found 41 Bell families in Jefferson County, OH. Are there any Bell descendants on this mailing list who are familiar with the names William Bell or Oscar Bell. William Bell b. Abt. 1823 married Maria Arabella DeGarmo b. Abt. 1825, and Oscar Bell b. December 8, 1856 married Sarah Jane DeGarmo b. February 11, 1855. Further, I am looking for a Wiley Bell who I believe fits in with the William and Oscar Bell mentioned above. Bill DeGarmo billdegarmo@pcisys.net
Sandra, Eva Palmer was the only one I have. I have no idea if she is related to any of the other Palmers in Jefferson Co. but imagine she is. I thank you for looking up the Vandine. Everything seems to point to Hannah Vandine being Charles Vandine's mother. The only other Palmer that shows up is a Hannah Palmer. Thanks again. Greetings, Probably a long shot -- there is an old town/village called CHALFANT, if I'm not mistaken, in Perry Co OH, prob. Hopewell twp. Might your CHALFANTs have come from there, be connected with that family, etc.? Perhaps someone there might have a database, etc...?? Happy searching! Caral
Hi, Following is a message from Rootsweb regarding changes in mailing list policy. This change will NOT affect this list because it has been closed since its inception. In other words, only list subscribers may post to this list. I felt that I should post the message to this list since you may hear about it on other lists that it does affect. Have a good day, Terri NEWS AND NOTES FROM ROOTSWEB MAILING LISTS POLICY CHANGE. Now in order to post to a RootsWeb- hosted mailing list, first you must subscribe to the list (send SUBSCRIBE message to <[listname]-L-request@rootsweb.com>). This policy became necessary because the volume of spam that was being sent through our lists had reached a phenomenal level. Worse, some users had begun to send spam complaints to sites that were completely unrelated to RootsWeb, but could kill our network connection if they received too many complaints. Closing the lists to non-subscribers became a matter of self-preservation. Because spammers seldom subscribe to the lists they spam, by limiting posting privileges to subscribers we should eliminate almost all spam. The rare spam that still leaks through should be reported to: <abuse@rootsweb.com> and NO other site. You can be sure that RootsWeb will contact all other appropriate sites. -- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Researching HUBBARD,LANAGHAN,JAMES,MENZEL,HAMROCK,GEARY, My Family Tree http://www.geocities.com/heartland/1261/family.htm Jefferson Co. Sandra, do you have a marriage for Rebecca Ann Palmer to a John W Lamp. Or a John Copeland to Margaret Leech. Thank you, Dale
No census before the 1850 one listed the names of spouses and children, so no names would be listed on the 1830 or 1840 census. I checked in my Jeff. C. marriages 1798-1850 and there is nothing listed for any Vandine. There are several Palmers so if you'll send me an email with some given names, I'll look them up for you.---------- > From: VJohnson <bolava@wirefire.com> > To: OHJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: VANDINE/PALMER > Date: Thursday, December 17, 1998 5:59 AM > > Hi, > Am hoping someone might connect. Hi, Am hoping someone might connect. I am searching for the parents of Charles Vandine who is listed on the 1840 census index and for information on Hannah VANDINE on the 1830 census index. I feel the two connect but not sure how. Do the 1830 and 1840 census list spouse and children? If so does anyone have access to these for Jefferson Co. that can look these two names up? Charles married an Eva PALMER and I am also looking for their marriage and her parents. Charles moved to Perry Co. but believe Eva died in Jefferson Co. and then to Ross Co. where he died. Any help with this would be appreciated. Valerie

Randy, I had a great aunt who in 1964 at the age of 77 wrote a family history in which she said, "should have told you in the beginning how Wintersville was named...for our great, great grandfather Winters. He was the first settler in Wintersville. He came from Guernsey County, down from around Cambridge, Lorre City, and St Clairsville. Great-great grandfather had four daughters. Rhoda (Winters) married great-grandfather Elijah Lowry (my ancestor). Catherine (Winters) married John Floyd." No other daughters were mentioned, nor did she mention the first name of her great-great grandfather Winters. This was written for my father, Richard Host Cole. Elijah Lowry b1827, Guernsey Co, Ohio, d 9/6/1878, Wintersville Ohio. Married Rhoda Winters 9/25/1851. Hope this information gives you some type of a lead in tracing Stiles Winters. Again to all Chalfant Family researchers - W. A. Chalfant of Bishop, California was a very well known newspaperman and puiblisher of several books. Wrote THE STORY OF INYO in 1922, and also DEATH VALLEY THE FACTS. His father was Pleasant Arthur Chalfant who was an early 49er to California. Don't know where the father came from but I might be able to locate a source if anyone is interested. W.A. (William) Chalfant died in 1943. Hope this is of interest to someone Helen Weals -----Original Message----- From: Julia A. Jane, This may or may not be new info for you. I found two Chalfants in the 1871 Atlas of Jefferson Co. One is W. Chalfant in Main St. near Lindon in New Alexandria, Cross Creek Twp. The other is Mrs. M. E. Chalfant on Second St. near South St. in Tiltonville, Warren Twp. Terri, I think Genuconnect sounds like a good idea. We're all fishing. May as well make it a big pond.
Sorry Terri, My Marriage Index is 1798 thru Dec, 1820 Janice
