I have been trying for a year, with no success, to locate information about my wife's grandparents, Nicholas and Catherine FILIPOWITZ. He was a miner in Adena from (circa) 1890 - 1930. They lived in Adena where they operated a small grocery from their farmhouse. Their children were Theodore, called Tater, Frank, Rose, Catherine, Dorothy, and Mary. Later in years they called themselves PHILLIPS. Any info would be helpful: birth certificates for children, Marriage certificates for Nicholas and Catherine KORINSKA, or daughters, or death info re Nicholas, he died when a wagon fell on him. Barbara, Not a stupid question! I'm surprised that it isn't a regular topic of conversation here. <g> I wouldn't be surprised if many of us have ancestors that were involved in the Coal Mining industry in Jefferson County. I have done a little research into coal mining in Jefferson County because my ancestors were involved in Coal Mining in Steubenville. I only have a few pages copied from the following book, not the entire book. This is a list from about 1910, so it is a little later than you were asking about, but it may be a starting point. >From the book "20th Century History of Steubenville and Jefferson County, Ohio and Representative Citizens," (Doyle,Joseph B., 1910) Chapter XVI, Natural Resources and Development, Page 259: The leading coal mines of the county, as given in the state mine inspectors report, are as follows: American Sewer Pipe Company, Blyth Coal Company, Bergholz Coal & Electric Light Company, Dexter Coal Company, Eastern Ohio Coal Company, East Ohio Sewer Pipe Company, Glens Run Coal Company, Jefferson Coal Company, Kaul-Oberkirch Company, Labelle Iron Works, La Grange Coal Company, Magyar Coal Company, Morris-Poston Coal Company, Ohio & Pennsylvania Coal Company, Roby Coal Company, Russell Coal & Mining Company, Steubenville Coal & Mining Company, W. I, too, have been wondering if anyone on this mailing list has shared information concerning the coal mines and the miners who made up this major industry in Jefferson and adjoining counties during so many years. My father and grandfather were coal miners in such mines as "Witch Hazel", "Sunshine", "Piney Fork" and other names that I recall only when someone uses the name. My father's only brother, Ernest Durbin, was killed in a mine--I know not which--when he was in his early 20's. He left behind a young son and a pregnant wife. I also had an uncle, one of my mother's brothers, who died as a result of a slate fall that severed his spine at the deep shaft in Unionvale, Harrison Co., OH. I recall the sound of the whistle that blew at mines when there was a major accident somewhere deep beneath the ground. I remember the smell of coal dust brought home on the clothes and body of my father. One of my great grandfathers owned a small "worked out" mine from which he sold to a few local customers in the "Long Run/Dillonvale" area. I've tried to find books on the subject of coal mining in southeastern Ohio but can find none. I've even considered the possibility of taking on the task of researching the topic and talking with families in the area who were "coal miners' families" to attempt to draw together what must be a wealth of local color stories and historic events in that area. Any suggestions, information or whatever would be most appreciated. Having lived in a coal miners' town, Adena, with a coal miner father, grandfather and loads of coal miner relatives during part of the Great Depression, I know something of the thoughts and experiences of that time and place. Hi, I have the feeling this is a "stupid question" - hopefully it will be seen as naive instead :-). It seems most, if not all, of my Jefferson Co. Generally speaking, if you put Quotes" around the subject you are searhing, a multiple searh engine will give you sites that only contain all the words between the " "s. Give this a try when using multiple searh engines!
Hi all, I've found that by using the "webferret" search engine that there is a site that lists unclaimed Civil War medals available to descendants of the person who was awarded them. The site I looked at was KY and I was able to follow a link to that particular site. I don't know if there is a similar service for those who served in the war from Ohio. If you're interested, you might want to check this out. Sorry that I don't have the site address immediately available to give in this communication. Ed Durbin
Hi, I've "discovered" an excellent small free software program called "webferret." It's a search engine that searches a number of other search engines. I've made a number of discoveries using it. It's available through http://www.download.com. Simply search for "webferret.exe". It's only weakness that it searches for ALL the words that you enter. If you use a person's first and last name it will find all the references to them together, pluse each separately. It's options as to number of "returns" of sites if 500. You can increase the number to as many as you wish, which I found necessary. I've found it to be quite helpful. Ed Durbin
Mitch, Yes, all three men were in Co. B 5nd O.V. I. I also had a Lorenzo Dall BROWN in the Fifth Independent Battalion Ohio Vol. Cavalry, a brother to Edward Jackson BROWN.
