    1. Steamboats Built at Steubenville, Ohio, 1820 through 1854
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Researchers of the Jefferson County, Ohio Mailing List, Sitting at my favorite easy chair, with a hot cup of peppermint herb tea, I searched the "Lytle-Holdcamper List: Merchant Steam Vessels of the United States, 1790-1868" for every steamboat built at Steubenville, Ohio. I found eleven vessels, and I hope I did not miss any. I have listed them in order of the year they were built, but in the book the steamboats are listed in alphabetical order by the name of the vessel. Abbreviations: p=sidewheeler. w=sternwheeler. A=abandoned, dismantled, exempt from documentation, or removed for an unknown cause or one not covered by other symbols. L=LOST. U=information unknown. D=no documentation, but existence of vessel certain. t=tons [weight of vessel]. Note: The city is the vessel's first home port. All eleven steamboats were built at Steubenville, Ohio. 1. 1820: "Hero", p, 126t, Louisville, KY, L-1822. Stranded 20 Feb 1822 at Golconda, Illinois. 2. 1821: "Robert Thompson", U, U, D, L-1823. Collided. 3. 1830: "Lady Byron", w, 90t, Pittsburgh, PA. A-1837. 4. 1830: "Tally Ho", p, 142t, Nashville, TN. A-1835. 5. 1832: "Chippewa", w, 150t, Pittsburgh, PA. L-1841. Snagged 25 Mar 1841 at Mobile, Alabama. 6. 1833: "Andrew Jackson", p, 98t, Cincinnati, OH. L-1838. Snagged 16 May 1838 at Mobile, Alabama. 7. 1833: "Post Boy", p, 43t, Pittsburgh, PA. A-1838. 8. 1834: "Wacousta", p, 98t, Pittsburgh, PA. A-1841. 9. 1836: "Reporter", p, 134t, Pittsburgh, PA. A-1842. 10. 1837: "Bonaparte", p, 185t, New Orleans, LA. A-1842. 11. 1854: "Pan Handle" [Ferry], p, 46t, Wheeling, VA. A-1861. Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio

    3. Terri, I think it would be a great idea to put all the info. on the page as I find all History Of Jefferson Co. very interesting. My family on my mothers side originated from Toronto and I remember my grandmother telling me of the paddlewheel showboats stopping in Toronto and what a grand time they had seeing them. My gr.gr.grandfather was a pioneer citizen of Toronto his name was David Aten and he started the first planing mill, general hardware store, and a florist business in Toronto when it was young. So as you can see my roots run deep in that part of the country. Any history of the Jefferson Co. area would be fine as far as i`m concerned to put on the page. Sincerly John M. 3. This was wonderful information! Did any of it list who the owners were of the vessels? My ggguncle Levi James was owner of Buckeye Titan a sternwheeler/steamboat company that did not build their own. 3. Terri, I always look for the histories on the County sites I visit. My Benjamin Reed was one of the originals, being a squatter and kicked out several times, documented in "20th Century History and Biography of Steubenville & Jefferson Co, OH" He was also a boat builder. I have a list of the first settlers and a list of the first lots sold at Steubenville. If you do not have them. I will be happy to post them to the list. 3. I have a question about "Hopewell Cemetery." I've not heard of it before and am wondering about how it got its name. Since I'm also an "amateur archeologist", the name has special appeal because of the Hopewell Moundbuilding Native Americans, of which the "Adena" Indians were a part. Does the name have anything to with these Amerindians? Thanks! Ed Durbin PrissyCraw@aol.com wrote: > > I live on the same road as hopewell cem.
