----FORWARDED MESSAGE------ Hi All, Please pass this on to your county mail lists, also. I had started a list of people and the counties they would like to coordinate, should any of those counties need adoption. While juggling computers, I seem to have mislaid that list. If you have the desire to adopt a county please send me a list of the counties you would be interested in adopting. This does not mean that those counties will be given to you, nor does it mean that any current County Coordinator is in any jeopardy of losing their county. I am only wanting to have a listing of people whom I might call, if the need arrises. If anyone is looking for an Assistant or would like to be an Assistant County Coordinator, this listing will also be of help. You can email me privately if you prefer at mailto:jkelble@accnorwalk.com Peace, Judy -- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Researching HUBBARD,LANAGHAN,JAMES,MENZEL,HAMROCK,GEARY, My Family Tree http://www.geocities.com/heartland/1261/family.htm Jefferson Co. One of the best histories I have read of Jefferson County, Ohio, is in two editions of the books which were put out by the Ohio Archaeological and Historical Publications of Columbus, Ohio. These books were published yearly by this group. The two which have history of Jefferson county are Volume 6, printed in 1898, and volume 8 , printed in 1900. The articles in both books are entitled Pathfinders of Jefferson County, by W. H. Hunter. They give much genealogical and historical information. I do not know where they would be available, however. Hello, Noticed the interest in the early history of Jefferson Co., OH. There is a book, "The 20th Century History of Steubenville and Jefferson Co., OH", Doyle, 1910 which is 1196 pages in small print, and 9" x 11". Just filled with the early history of the area. The Jefferson County Historical Association did a reprint in 1992 and added a 122 page Everyname Index. Unfortunately, there are only 2 copies left (back in Oct) and the price is $75.00. It would be a wonderful dream to have this on-line as Washington Co., PA Gen Web did with their early county history. We can certainly hope for a similar project when the remaining copies are "sold-out". Past-President, Bridgette Osz of JCC OGS volunteered her time on this very same project and might give ideas. And regarding Jan's reference to "killed by cars" on her relative's death records. Suggest she and others write to Sandy Day for a $2.00 search for all the newspapers obits and accidents were reported in all their gory detail and were considered newsworthy. Her address and cost for research and copies is located on the "Collection" page at: Jefferson County Chapter, OGS http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohjefogs Happy Ancestor Hunting, Julia fkrutill@weir.net
I am a new subscriber to this list, and I am researching the TORBET family. HUGH TORBET, my gr. uncle was born in Dalmellington,Scotland in 1859 His wife, ELIZABETH McMAHON was born in Ireland, also in 1859. They were married in 1883 in Jefferson Co., to the best of my knowledge. Hugh was a coal miner, and in the 1900 census his occupation was listed as a "weighmaster." They lived for many years in Dillonvale, Mt.Pleasant township. Their third child, GEORGE TORBET, was born in 1890 and died at the age of 17 (ca1907) in a mine accident. Their fourth child, DOUGLAS TORBET, was born in 1893 and died at 14 or 15 years (ca 1907 or 1908) of "natural causes." Hugh's younger sister, ELIZABETH TORBET immigrated from Dalmellington to the US in 1887, following the death of her mother. I believe she came to Jefferson Co. to join her brother and to marry THOMAS WILSON, her bethrothed and also a miner. I have a photograph of the couple taken at Plummer's (?) phototography in Weeeling, but my research indicates they were not married in Wheeling. They were married ca 1893. I need help in the form of lookups or addresses where to write to obtain the following: 1) Documentation for the marriage of HUGH TORBET and ELIZABETH McMAHON. (1883) 2) Documentation for the marriage of ELIZABETH TORBET and THOMAS WILSON.(1893) 3) Documentation for the deaths of GEORGE and DOUGLAS TORBET. (1907/1908) I would be happy to do reciprocal lookups in this area in exchange. Thanks for any assistance that may be offered. John M. Torbet (jmtorbet@aol.com) Sun City West, AZ (Phoenix Area)

I don't believe that my Cooper's have any connection to KY, but.... John Cooper (1784-1875) married to Elizabeth Vantilburgh (1801-1855) Henry Cooper (1821-1897) married to Hannah D Johnston (1825-1909) George Johnston Cooper (1848-1912) married to Alvira Mooney Cullum(1854-1930) If I come up with any Ky connection, I'll let you know. jan

Guess I had better clarify myself. I only have a few pages of the Jefferson Co book. I wish I had the book. The only other tidbits I have from the book are half a page of 85 and all of 86 so here goes: JOSEPH ROSS with wife and son Jacob settled on Mingo Bottom as early as 1784. His son was the first white child born here. Absolom married Annie Edsell whose father lived near Cross Creek on an elevated point. JOSEPH TILTON came to the Ohio country from PA as early as 1776, and settled near the site of Tiltonville. His son Caleb was looked upon as the first white child born in Jefferson Co, the date of birth being previous to 1784, at which time Absolom Ross was born. Others followed Tilton and settled at Warrenton and Tiltonville and in 1785 large settlements here including the Maxwells, McClearys, Tiltons and McCormacks. CABLE, EPHRIAM was born here in 1785. His father had settled the mouth of Island Creek that year. The father built a blockhouse, where he lived and reared the elder children of a family of twelve. Ephriam served in the War of 1812. DELONG, JESSE was born on Short Creek abt 1776, and died at the age of 106. He was probably the son of Solomon Delong mentioned above. MCDONALD, JOHN was the father of Col John McDonald and Thomas McDonald was the uncle of Col John McDonald. Page 86 Jefferson County was erected by Gov St. Clair in 1797 and embraced all of Ohio from the Ohio River to Lake Erie and from PA line to the Cuyahoga and Muskingum rivers on the west. Steubenville was laid out the same year by Bazaleel Wells and James Ross. BAZALEEL WELLS was born in Balitimore in 1772. Being a government surveyor he was given 1,100 acres of land on the west side of the OH River. He died 1846. Descendants lived in Steubenville. JAMES ROSS was born in York Co, PA 1762. He was a prominent Pittsburg lawyer, and was one of the first two senators from PA. He had taken up large tracts of land in OH. The Steubenville Land Office was established 10 May 1800, DAVID HOGE of PA w as the first Registrar, ZACCHEUS BIGGS was the first Receiver, and the second was OBAGIAH JENNINGS who later became a Presbyterian Minister. He was succeeded by PETER WILSON, who was appointed in 1808, serving 13 years, and was succeeded by GEN. SAMUEL STOKELY son of CAPT THOMAS STOKELY. There were large settlements on Island Creel and Cross Creek as early as 1797, and a large settlement in Mt. Pleasant Twp. It was made up of Scotch-Irish from VA & PA, and Quakers from NC. BENJAMIN SHANE was the first settler on Island Creek, back of the river 1797. ROBERT MCCLELLAN cousin of ROBERT MCCLELLAN, noted scout who was with Wayne, was among the first settlers in Wayne Twp, coming from Westmoreland Co, PA 1808. EPHRIAM COOPER and WILLIAM CAMPBELL built the first cabin on the line b/t Wills Creek and Yellow Creek 1795. JAMES DUNLEVY, a Scotch-Irish Episcopalian, came from Fayette Co, PA settled Cross Creek 1796. He was sheriff of the county at his death 1806. Daughter Nancy b. 1805 was the mother of Judge J.H. ANDERSON of Columbus. THOMAS GEORGE, HENRY CRABS, ISAAC SHANE and MORDECAI MOORE were first settlers in Ross Twp from 1798 to 1805. MORDECAI MOORE was stolen when a small boy on the street of London and brought to Philadelphia where he was sold to a Quaker. HENRY CRABS located in 1798 and erected a blacksmith shop near Richmond, making plow points, axes, and trace chains. ANDREW AULT's father was a captain in the Rev War operated a flaxseed oil mill near Redstone (Brownsville), PA. The first white child born in Wayne Twp was JOHN MANSFIELD b. in Sec 10 Dec 1797 and JOSEPH COPELAND was the second in 1800. ROBERT CAROTHERS and JESSE THOMAS of PA settled on the site of Mt. Pleasant in 1796, followed soon by ADAM DUNLAP, COL MCCUNE, JOHN TAGGERT, COL JOSEPH MCKEE, WILLIAM FINNEY, DAVID ROBINSON, JOHN POLLOCK, WILLIAM CHAMBERS, BENJAMIN SCOTT and others mostly Scotch-Irish from PA, before 1800. The UPDEGRAFF and STANTON families were prominent in the Quaker Church. END- faith
I have a question to the quieries and surname register of that page...I had a query for 2 surname's and registered them both for jefferson co. ohio in the surname list..They are now gone....What happened to them? And the area that say's unindexed quieries and surnames..When I click to enter that page.. There is nothing there..It's empty...Is it because I have webtv and not a computer? I never had a problem before.. I hope some one can answer these question's..My ancestor's lived in Jefferson county and some still do.... Sarah jsfox@webtv.net
I've been reading all the coal mine info, thinking it was interesting, but certainly didn't apply to me. Then I saw the comment "killed by cars" and suddenly realized I had seen that comment on the death record of one of my relatives, William Mooney Cullum. He was an engineer with the Railroad, so I had assumed his death was RR cars (this was in 1880). Now I'm having to rethink this. Anyone out there know anything about the railroad history in Jeff Co? All of my mother's relatives were in that county from about 1800 til 1900, so any/all info regarding the history of the county really is fascinating. I can get the dates, etc, but what I really want is to know more about them and where they lived and what they did. Those are the difficult things to learn. So thanks for all the exciting glances into the past. Jan Kolb ( my Jeff Co names-Cooper,Cullum, Mooney, Johnston, Allen, Glenn, Vantilburgh, Leatherberry, Emmons)
Hi, I don't really know. The pages I got were sent to me from the Genealogical Society there in Jeff Co. I was in Provo awhile back and saw they had a copy. Perhaps someone on the list would know. I have so many from there early as well as later, I wouldn't mind a copy either! Terri and Chuck, Excellent idea to put mining and steamboat building information into a special site. I wonder what other industries, including farming were going on in those days. For agriculture, what kinds of farms? Was there a milling industry or family mills? Was flour shipped? Were there beef and dairy cattle both? What other animals were used for income? As for other industry, was there logging? Refraction or brick making? Shipping of course on the river. etc. Also is there a site describing the town of Steubenville or surounding towns. Ie size, businesses, etc. Also, is there a history site, telling of early settlers and their lives such as Indian raids, and the effect the Revolutionary War had. I found the book, "The Dark and Bloody River" to be very amazing in what the settlers put up with or endured and suffered through. Dear Members of the Jefferson County, Ohio Mailing List, Responding to questions which I've been asked regarding the list of steamboats that were built at Steubenville, Ohio, 1820 through 1854 [from the Lytle-Holdcamper List]: Unfortunately, Lytle's List does not include the names of the owners of the steamboats, nor does it name the captains or pilots of the vessels. Everything that is enumerated about each steam vessel was posted in my original message. And, to answer the question about "First Home Ports": Normally, the port nearest the residence of the steamboat owner, or where he carried on his business. There were exceptions to this, however. I was researching the steamboat "Boyle", which was built in 1849 at Rock Island, Illinois, and was said to have had Saint Louis, Missouri as her first home port. But, due to her small size [65-ton sternwheeler], she might have been registered in Saint Louis, but carried on a short trade only in the Rock Island area, according to a Saint Louis researcher.
