    3. All this talk of coal mines jiggled my memory and I looked back to find my great-grandfather, Albert HOUSEHOLDER is listed on the 1870 census in Saline Township as a coal miner. Does anyone know what mine he would likely have worked in at that time and place. I believe he lived in Cream City near Irondale, in Jefferson County. Thanks. Janice

    1. SSDI
    2. J.M. Waller
    3. Social Security was not available to all in the begining. One got a card if one was employed or about to be employed in a covered job. Farmers, military, self-employed, and government workers were a few of those not initially covered. They were added in over time. It was also possible (and often happened) that people got new cards and numbers each time they changed their job. The SSDI lists only those people for whom a claim for death benefits was made. When one dies, the party responsible for the payment of the funeral applies to SS for the benefit (usually thru the funeral home) and SS send a check for $250 or $255 - can't remember which - to you or to the funeral home. If no claim is made, the name is not on the list whether one has a card & number or not. Railroads had their own system. Check out the SS website for catagories of workers and dates of inclusion in the system. (it is written in Acrobat which doesn't print well on my dot matrix) krschafer@worldnet.att.net

    2. Sarah, I just sent the address of the SS to the list..look for it. Yes any one in the 1940's should of had a SS number, depending how old they were. IF they didn't work they wouldn't have one. I don't know when it became mandatory to have a SS number, but when my granddaughter was born in 1979 she had to have one, and her mother filled out the application in the hospital.. I am sure someone will write with a lot of knowledge on this subject. Wilma Fleming Haynes gencon@harborside.com Sarah Sall wrote: > > Can any one tell me when the SSD started ? 1. Mutual Interest in COOPERs of Jefferson County, Ohio
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Jan Kolb and Other Members of the Jefferson County, Ohio Mailing List, Today's posting by Jan Kolb listed "COOPER" as one of the Jefferson County surnames she is researching. Please contact me, Jan and others, with a few details on these COOPERs, since I am intent on studying the COOPERs' possible connections to the CRITZERs of Jefferson County, Ohio. Peter CRITZER died 1839 in the area of Bacon Ridge, Jefferson County, and was buried in Bacon Ridge Cemetery. Peter CRITZER had come into Jefferson County from Brooke County [a part which later became Hancock County], [West] Virginia. At least two of Peter CRITZER's sons [L. Martin CRITZER and Samuel CRITZER] moved from Jefferson County to Kentucky, probably by traveling down the Ohio River: to Mason County and Greenup County, respectively. My third-great grandfather William COOPER married a stepdaughter of Samuel CRITZER named Martha Ann BARNEY, 6 May 1846, in Greenup County, Kentucky. Thus was formed a "BRIDGE" linking Jefferson County, Ohio to Mason and Greenup Counties, Kentucky. It is essential that I acquaint myself with the Jefferson County COOPERs to determine whether any of them had a connection to Kentucky, as the CRITZERs did. This COOPER investigation is fueled by the fact that I remain completely without a clue as to William COOPER's residence before his arrival in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1846. Because of the CRITZER migrations, Jefferson County, Ohio could be the prior location of the COOPERs, as well. Even if the search turns up negative, I cannot neglect looking into it. Thank you for your help with the COOPER issue. Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio

    3. You are all aware that many towns and villages in Jefferson Co. have changed names various times throughout history. For example, Brilliant was once called LaGrange. OHGenWeb has a great site called Defunct and Changed Place Names being put together by Willi Waltrip. Bernice Wilson began the project and Willi has taken over. The address is http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohdefunc/ Check out the site and feel free to contribute any changes or additions. I think that this site will be a great help to researchers.
