    3. Hi Barbara, Your dates and place of Ross daughters would be so perfect, except none were named Maria. Wish we could find one in the family, but yours are all well documented for death as well. Thank you for sending your info. Our Maria was also born between 1800 and 1810. She married in Steubenville, OH on 2 Jun 1827 to John Thompson and they had a nice family born there in OH. that eventually moved to Iowa. Maybe we are getting closer. 1. Railroad Maps 1828-1900 & Marriage in this Ohio Valley
    2. Julia A. (Heaton)Krutilla
    3. Hello, Accidentally, found an interesting Map Collection hosted by the Library of Congress - Railroad Maps 1828-1900 at: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/rrhtml/rrhome.html At the above site you can search by Keyword, and Geographic Location as well as other searches. But more importantly, these maps load as thumbnails, permitting you to zoom in and out, and enlarging the detail. The thumbnail permits you to decide whether the selected map provides the location you are seeking rather than waiting minutes for a complete image. Might help some researchers working with their RR ancestors, too. I just remember my grandmother telling me the stories of shopping in the 1890s - 1910 for her little girls fancy dresses. She would casually catch a train in Mingo Jct., OH and travel down to Wheeling, WV. for an afternoon shopping and return home before evening. (Sounds almost like today traveling to the shopping malls.) This very same Railroad system has given me headaches looking for birth, marriage and death records. Found many young couples who lived in Jefferson County, OH and surrounding area, eloping and traveling up and down this valley scattering their vital records. Which brings up another story. My 16 year old Aunt in 1936 eloped with her intended. They both lived in Mingo Jct., OH, traveled by train to New Cumberland, Hancock Co., WV (where she giving the age of 21) were married that morning. Caught another train to Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA where they intend to honeymoon. In the meantime, my grandmother encouraged the police to put out an "all points" bulletin regarding her missing youngster. The Pittsburgh Police found them, and as the story goes, when Grandmother found out they were married, she told the police to let them go. My Aunt's jealous sister-in-law always told the story of a Pittsburgh paper's front page picture showing the new wife "behind bars". It took us over 3 years to find this marriage record at the Hancock Co., WV Courthouse (as we never thought they would have married there) - and quite by accident while checking all family surnames. Lo and behold, a clerk back in 1936 had cut out the Pittsburgh Star's photo which stated,"Mrs. ______, 17, until yesterday Miss _______, of Mingo Jct., O. spent her first night of married life in the matron's department, Central Police Station, while her young husband paced a cell two floors below. The girl was held as a runaway for the arrival of her mother." This was a beautiful picture, head-to-toe, of a well-dressed young girl sitting cross-legged on the Judge's massively carved desk! Oh, how I would love to thank the Hancock County, WV clerk who took the time to cut out that photo and paper clip it to the marriage book where I found it only - 60 years later. 3. Steamboat interested persons. There is a book called "Buckeye Titan" (my Dad has it right now so I don't have the authors) written about the Levi James family and their descendants who travelled the Ohio River and Mississippi River on various steamboats, flatboats etc. one of which if I recall was built in STeubenville. This James family scattered all along the Ohio Valley some even possibly in Jefferson County. I just haven't put the ties together yet as were so many. The book is very interesting. It can be requested through any antique book dealer. Was written in the 1950's. It is well indexed too as to family names and information. Valerie Johnson

    1. Adena Coal Miners, Mines and Families.
    2. Hi Gina, I was born in Ohio and spent my childhood there. Both my father and grandfather were coal miners. Although I don't have a complete list of the names of the mines where they worked, but there were several of them. They traveled to and from work daily, so the mines had to have been fairly close to Adena. In listing the ones that I remember, keep in mind that sometimes mines, like other places of employment had the names the coal miners gave them them as well as their official names. Some of the names that I remember are: "Witch Hazel", "Sunshine", "Roby", "Piney Fork" and "Hanna Coal Company". There were probably others. Sometimes individual miners would mine some of the coal left behind after a mine had been worked out. My great-grandfather Thomas Ainscough was one who owned a "one-man" mine who sold coal to individual customers in the area of "Long Run" and "Dillonvale". I have only family conversation concerning this mine and it probably had no name other than the owner's name. I remember that during the Great Depression some families, like ours, had to burn "blossom coal", which was the poor quality coal that was close to the surface. Because we couldn't afford to spend much on coal even though my family members were miners, we often gathered coal that fell from the railroad trains as they passed our house. We would take a coal bucket and walk the track picking up lumps of various sizes to bring home to keep the fires burning. It was always a big day--and a hard-work day--when we would get a "load of coal" because the whole family helped to shovel the coal into the "coal house" next to our home. People who had coal "shoots" into their coal bin in their basements were very lucky! :) However, in spite of the hardships, I have only happy memories from childhood. My parents probably suffered the most. Regarding the name of the relative of yours, Margaret Keschkes, she would have been close to the same age of my father. Adena School records might have information about her as well as the church her family may have attended. In such a small town as Adena, most everyone knew one another. The coal miners were especially close and often met after work at "Pete and Mikes" for a beer and fellowship before coming home. I must say, I never saw my father or grandfather and their coal mining friends drunk. I guess they needed the "break" together following work more than they needed a beer. By the way, I believe that Pete and Mike's is still at the same location and at last report was owned and run by a relative of mine. I hope this summer to spend time in Adena interviewing families of some of the coal miners and will attempt to get more up-to-date information of the mines from those who have lived their lives in Adena. I hope that this information helps in some small way. Ed Durbin MICHAEL W HINDS wrote: > > Hi, > > The coal mining discussions have been great. I am looking for > information about Adena. 3. Hi - you wrote: Charity CRITSER married John MCCULLOUGH, 27 Dec 1825, in Jefferson County, Ohio. In an earlier document, when Charity CRITSER was single, she was recorded as living in Steubenville, Ohio. I had an e-mail last June from Hugh Hunter of Hawaii on this same couple and I happened to have the info on this marriage which I sent to him at that time. He wrote: I am looking for information on a John McCullough who married Charity Critser in Jefferson County, OH, in 1825. My GG grandfather John McCullough Wycoff (1830-1908) was the son of Jefferson County residents Cornelius Wycoff and Leah Critser. I have been trying for some time to determine the source of his middle name. Recently I learned from a Critser descendant that Leah's sister Charity Critser married John McCullough in Jefferson County in 1825. Leah apparently named her son after her sister's husband. Who was this John McCullough and what is his relationship to other Jefferson County McCulloughs? I do have some early McCullough family information. When I was in Steubenville in Oct 1996, I made a copy of a three page report that I found at the Genealogy Library of the descendants of John McCullough of Donegal Co., Ireland and Jane Underwood, who emigrated in 1792. The report lists three generations and had been submitted by Priscilla Sweeney in July 1996. The report did not list the sources. The marriage of John McCullough to Charity Critser was not listed, nor is there a John McCullough who looks like a candidate. Among my other lines in Jefferson County, Ohio are Frye and Culp. 3. I'm searching for info on my ggg grandparents, Robert and Jane Chalfant CLARK. They moved from PA to Belmont Co. about 1830, then to Jefferson Co. prior to 1860. The 1860 census lists him as a stone mason, age 68. They died there, Robert in 1872, and Jane in 1877. They were Quakers, members of the Short Creek MM, and are buried in the Emerson cemetery. There are no death certificates. My problem is that I don't know who their parents were. Would appreciate any suggestions or help. Thanks in advance. Ruth Ann

    1. ROSS
    2. Hi Bobbie, Upon further checking, I found the following two paragraphs in the "History of Belmont and Jefferson Counties, J. A. Caldwell, 1880. Page 594 "Moses Ross was born in Chester county, Pa, in 1772. In 1803, Moses, his brother Robert and their mother, removed to Jefferson county, Ohio, and located on the farm where his sons yet reside, in Island Creek Township. In 1804 he married Elizabeth Ramsey, who was born in 1782, by whom he reared nine children. He died in 1855. During the war of 1812, he was paymaster of a regiment. James and David Ross own the homestead. Our subject's father, John Ross was a captain in the Revolutionary war, and served all through that struggle for liberty under General Washington." Page 601 "John Ross was born in Jefferson County in 1806. His father was Moses Ross, an early settler in the county. Mr. Ross was reared on the farm, and in 1834, married Miss Sarah Davis. They have eight children and had five sons in the late war." Could these be the father and brother of your Maria?
