Sue wrote 1/10/99: One of the best histories I have read of Jefferson County, Ohio, is in two editions of the books which were put out by the Ohio Archaeological and Historical Publications of Columbus, Ohio. These books were published yearly by this group. The two which have history of Jefferson county are Volume 6, printed in 1898, and volume 8 , printed in 1900. The articles in both books are entitled Pathfinders of Jefferson County, by W. H. Hunter. They give much genealogical and historical information. I do not know where they would be available, however. Sue I have copies from these Volumes - Not indexed, but I could do some lookups. Helen Weals

Hi The publication is called TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS AND FAMILY RECORDS OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, OHIO, Published by Esther Weygandt Powell. This covers all the Townships of Jefferson County, Ohio and the cemeteries therein. Mostly lists older tombstones. Probably can locate a copy of this in Ohio libraries. Would be glad to look up any names for you. Hi According to my notes William Fast was b. 1825 and died 2 January 1906, age 81 years old. He was the son of Jesse Fast and a brother of Mrs. Cyrus (Anna Fast) Davidson. Knox), married Katherine FAST, dau. of Jesse, and had 7 children. Page - 131 : FAST, Jesse 1844 - age 41 wife Rebecca 1837 - age 32 Would love to see the group sheet you refer to and any other records. I am interested in any descendants of Mary Ann (McCullough) FAST as I have been gathering McCullough information for many years. Would be happy to share any info. Helen Weals

Hello list. I am trying to locate relatives who lived in or around Canton, Ohio in September 1934. I have a group photograph of my father Dan COCKLIN along with his Uncle W. John and Aunt Aimie. A young girl, Mary who is probably about 6 or 7 years old may be their child. Others in the photo are Ralph and Freddie. Of course there are no last names on the picture, but I assume the last name may be COCKLIN, LLEWELLYN. I also have a class picture of my Uncle John Cocklin at 1st grade school in Bergholz. It's on a postcard. Can anyone be of assistance ? Any information would be appreciated. John Cocklin , Ottawa, Ontario zxcor@webruler.com

I have uncovered Griffith family in two different lines of my family. I have four brothers who (apparently) married four sisters and a male Griffith in the same time frame who married into a different line. I am trying to determine if he is of the same Griffith family? I'm needing to fill in some gaps of knowledge and am wondering if anyone has further descendant information on this family? Any help or a point in the right direction would be most appreciated. Historical Notes of Knox Township Jefferson Co. Oh. By Dr. Robert Schilling page 100,101,&102 Great Locomotive Chase One of the most daring and interesting episodes of the great Civil War, had as one of its character a Knox Twp. volunteer, William Pittenger. Eight lost their lives, and Pittenger for months was supposed to have be executed with them. By the efforts of Edward Stanton of this country these prisoners were exchanged March 1863. For a time, when Pittenger was thought to have been hung, it was wildly talked of holding memorial services for him in the New Somerset M.C. Church. Soon after the War, became a minister and preached on different occasion in this church. His book "Daring and Suffering" giving a complete history of this fight was read beside every fireplace in the North for the succeding 30 years I did not list all the details that are listed in this book, only that which pertains to Jeff.Co. Towns then and now; Then- Gillestown to East Springfield- now Then -Shanghai to Olive City To McCoy's Station to Empire- now In 1885 a sewer pipe establishment called the "Empire Sewer Pipe Company" they offered sufficient brick to the "Olive City" people to erect a suitable municipal building if the would change the village name to "Empire City". js Then- Newburg-to-Sloan's Station-to-Toronto- Now _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I'm looking for two brothers, Henry HAYWARD [b. 1794 Nova Scotia] and Matthew HAYWARD [b. 1796 Nova Scotia; had wife Margaret ___] who may have arrived in the Steubenville area around 1820-1822, possibly lived in Guernsey or Belmont counties 1820s-1840s.
