    1. Naturalization for Jeff. Co., OH 1823-1906 Book in the Ohio Room
    2. Julia A. (Heaton)Krutilla
    3. Karen and All, The book in question gives varying amts. of info. In some instances, it gives applicant's name, birth date, country from, entry date, and court date and page # on microfilm (which is also in the Ohio Room). In other instances, it gives Applicants name, country from, court date and witness name and pg. #. In other words, like any book - it's a game of roulette! Just wish we could post all this information on the www, but alas - there are well over 3,600 books in the Ohio Room. But any query to Sandy Day will be quickly answered. Regarding the frequent reference to the "Pathfinder's Book", the entire collection is in the Ohio Room as well, and a local genealogist has provided an everyname index of those pioneers, which has been inserted into the Ohio Room's copy for the patrons convenience. There are at least two copies which can be borrowed - perhaps those interested could borrow them on inter-library loan. Happy Hunting, Julia

    2. Julia A. (Heaton)Krutilla
    3. Hello DURY researchers, There is a 100 year (+ as the sign is very yellowed) Chestnut Stump which belonged to the John W. Dury Farm in Annapolis, and possibly later to the land owner by the name of Mr. Hill. You can find this very large "stump", along with other early Jefferson Co., OH artifacts, and pictures at the Biggio Team Ford Lincoln/Mercury Toyota car dealer on 905 Brady Avenue, Steubenville, OH. 1. Re: My surnames from Jefferson County
    2. Dear Audrey, I happened to notice your surname list and thought it was rather amazing! I am descended from Bates, Haynes, and Greer as well!! I would sure like to compare our families and see if we're connecting to the same lines! I am from a Daniel Bates, father of Ephram Bates. Ephram was born 1821, probably in OH. Daniel was born in PA, but I'm not sure when - some say 1789. Ephram's daughter Valinda was my ancestor. She was born 1860 in OH. They were in what is now Noble County, but I'm not certain is was Noble county then. Ephram and his wife had 8 children according to what I have. They were James, Susanna, Janes, Amanda, Daniel, William, Valinda and Martha. Are any of these yours? I'd love to share info - maybe we can help each other fill in some blanks! As for the Haynes and Greer lines - They were both in VA when I know of them. I have an Elizabeth Greer, possible father Charles, who married my Joseph Underwood. I don't know much about the Greer line at all. Elizabeth was born ca 1800-1810. My Haynes line is sketchy as well - it begins with Barbara Haynes, who was born ca 1800, and her father is unknown - maybe a Henry. Barbara married into the Tincher line. She and her husband John T. Tincher, lived in Greenbrier and Monroe Counties. Any thing familiar to you?? Hoping to hear from you! I have some more Bates information that I'd be happy to share with you if this is your line as well!! Let me know - Sincerely, Tracy in WA State

    1. SMITH, GREEN, THOMPSON, RANKIN
    2. Does anyone have any of these names: James C. SMITH, born 1790-1800, OH or PA. Married Anne M. Green, Ann (Green) THOMPSON, or Ann (THOMPSON) GREEN, (I have seen it all three ways). She was born 1790-1800 OH or PA, died before 1840. One of there children was John V. SMITH, born Aug 14, 1830, Jefferson County, OH. I am also trying to get information on William RANKIN. There was a probate notice in Steubenville newspaper, Jul 17, 1841 which reads: The final account of William RANKIN, Guardian of James SMITH'S heirs. Thanks for any help. Ron Smith

    1. Settlers: why and how did they come?
    2. Sandy Wilbur
    3. Here are a couple of questions for you folks who know the history of this part of Ohio? Is there any particular reason that settlers from a long ways away would have been drawn to the Jefferson-Belmont-Guernsey region in the 1820s? From what I've been able to determine, there wasn't major new settlement going on in the area, land giveaways, or other obvious incentives. Coupled with why they came, how were they most likely to get there? This would have been a little before the Erie Canal was completed, and it sounds like the National Road wasn't much of a road yet. I ask this because several New Brunswick, Canada, families came to the area in the early 1820s [maybe a little before 1820 for some of them]. I suspect some family followed other family who had come first, but why would the first ones have come? It doesn't seem like an area that New Brunswick folks would know much about. The question of how they got there is prompted by what seems to me an amazingly quick trip made by one of our families, that of John McCULLY. John, his wife Mary [COPP], and 4 boys under 10 [including a newborn] left New Brunswick [Saint John, or possibly Eastport, Maine] after their son John Wilmer McCULLY was born 22 May 1821. By 30 Jul 1822 John was "of Warren Township" [Jefferson County], and had signed a deed for land in Smithfield Township. How did they do it? Sandy Wilbur Gresham, OR

    1. Thompsons in my Tree, also!
    2. Hi, I also have Thompsons in my Family Tree. My mother's father was Charles Wesley Thompson, b. 22 May, 1875, married Effie Matilda Icenhood ("Isinghood"), d. 25 Dec, 1946. He lived in Green Twp. when they were first married. The rest of the time they lived and raised their children in Cadiz, Harrison County, OH. They had the following children: Cora Frances Thompson, Charles Boyd Thompson, Doyle Thompson, Emma Virginia Thompson (my mother), William Thompson (died at 9 hours old) and another infant son who died. He and my grandmother later divorced. His parents were George Thompson and Margaret Q. Busby. His siblings were: Jasper Thompson, Al Thompson, Stanton (Edward Stanton ?)Thompson, Walter Thompson. Other than a number of birthdates for the above, I have no other information. As you know, the Thompson name is hard to research unless specific names and places are known. Anyone sound familiar to anyone doing Thompson research? Ed Durbin Bobbie Reihsen wrote: > > Laura, I see you have a Thompson in your list of names. 3. Hi, Our THOMPSON family was in Steubenville in 1800 to 1850, John W. Thompson and son, John Thompson b. ca 1803,immigrated from Ireland. I don't know if they stopped in NY or VA for a few years or came directly to Jefferson co. but on 2 Jun 1827, John Thompson married Marie Ross in Steubenville. Their children were, John b. 1830, Matthew b. 1832, Mary Jane b. 1833, Moore Hamilton b. 1 Aaug 1837, Nancy Jane b. 6 Nov 1841, Margaret b. 1843, Richard H. b. 1845, Caroline b. 1840, Thomas b. 1849 and Robert H. b. 1851. They are in the 1850 census and John made out his will about 1849, but haven't found his date of death, must be after 1850. Really appreiciate any help.
