    3. Generally speaking libraries, state archives and genealogical societies have old newspapers on microfilm, and, sometimes, at the local level, a card file of obituary notices. But, keep in mind, each town is different. In Ohio, The Historical Soc. at Ohio Village has a fabulous collection of newspaper, from all over Ohio, all on film. ---------- > From: PrissyCraw@aol.com > To: OHJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Newspaper obits. > Date: Tuesday, February 02, 1999 4:33 PM > > Where can I find Newspaper Obits. > > > ==== OHJEFFER Mailing List ==== > Reminder: Please do not send mail to the list using HTML or RTF > If you aren't sure, visit > http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm

    2. If there is not a lodge listed in the area that your family was from in Ohio, you can write the the state office, which is located on the grounds of the home. The address is: Ohio Grand Lodge IOOF Home of Ohio 404 E McCreight Ave Springfield, Ohio 45503-3653 513-399-8311 I know that when some of the lodges closed the members transfered to another lodge in the area, such as Toronto's lodge members transfered to Steubenville. >Karen, > >The I.O.O.F. has a homepage on the Web. 3. Contact your local organization, and they can tell you. I did this with the Masons, and was told the headquarters address for the state I was interested in. I then contacted them, and they gave me the death date of my great grandfather, something I had been unable to find elsewhere. Good luck. ---------- > From: Karen Carlyle <kcarlyle@wave.home.com> > To: OHJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: IOF ancestral members > Date: Sunday, January 31, 1999 11:50 PM > > Hi, > Does anyone know if there is any information that can be obtained from > the IO(O)F organization, if an ancestor was a member? 1. Re: MISUNDERSTANDING ON WHERE CAN I FIND RECORDS
    2. Before births were officially recorded, beginning in most Ohio counties in 1867, one place to look is church records for baptisms. These sometimes give a birth date or if the church performs infant baptisms, you may at least have an approximate date and most church records name the parents and the sponsors. You would need to determine or speculate as to the religious affiliation of your ancestors. Also keep in mind that people often attended a nearby church, whether or not that was their first choice of denomination. If you know the location of their residence, maps of the time and histories will help you to determine the location of the closest churches. I assume that you have the death certificates and that these do not list date of birth nor parents. Hope these ideas will help you. Carol

    1. Re: BALSLEY/TWADDLE
    2. Karen Carlyle
    3. Marqel, I looked in the 1871 Atlas of Jeff. Co. and there are no Balsley listed (or similar spellings.) There are two Twaddle's: a J. Twaddle in Springfield Twp. (near Ross and Brush Creek border); and A. Twaddle in Brush Creek. Regarding marriage certificates, I have obtained a copy through the Probate Court in Jeff. Co. I first phoned to see if they had such a record, since they have an index for many of the marriages. I was told they did, and so I then followed up with a letter and payment for the copy. I didn't mind the long distance charge, since I at least knew right away. Mind you, the early records don't have a lot of information. But just seeing the old handwriting is kind of exciting! If you look at the entry "Jeff. Co. Resources" on the Jeff. Co. GenWeb page you can find the phone number and hours. Here's the GenWeb link in case you don't have it bookmarked. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/1261/ Hope this helps, Karen --------------------- Qel33@aol.com wrote: > > I am requesting information on William Balsley who married Christianina > Twaddle on Jan. 3 1872 in Jefferson.
