Hi Susan O'Brien, I believe you are confusing me with some others on this list--I am not involved in this little "spat" going on here. The woman named Sandra said something a bit rude to a couple of others on this list who didn't like what she had written previously and had told her that they had found her remarks offensive. <<If this is offensive, then I think you need to get the chip off your shoulder.....>> This is when I stepped in, I have no other interest in the subject whatsoever, except that being on this list, I don't find this the kind of stuff that the majority of the rest of us want to read. But when you make a remark telling someone to get the chip off her shoulder to someone--I find THAT offensive. Flaming is not allowed on these lists. Sandra also sent this which she said someone else (?) wrote to her << I certainly wouldn't want to be married to Mrs. Vice-Regent, Pres of OGS Jefferson Co. You didn't do anything wrong. Her own e-mail showed her to be a woman who is unyielding.>> this also is insulting, don't you think? So, hopefully I made my myself understood in this message--I am not involved in this and don't wish to be. Please when someone must write this sort of stuff--do it directly to the person's own e-mail and not put all these arguments on the list for everyone else to have to read. And don't write to me, write to the ones who are involved in the dispute! :-) Judie
Thanks Susan, for the kind word...You know, I always thought that this was suppose to be fun. Now, tell me about Daughters of 1812. I have just sent for the military records for several 1812 Vet ancestors....and another of my ancestor, the Reverend Francis Doughty, Anglican minister, arrived in Mass. in 1638, and had congregations in Mass, on Manhatten, and later, in Va. He's was always in trouble (or misunderstood) somewhere, and so is well documented. He even had a poor soul brought up on charges of "witchery" at about the same time as the salem witch trials......only in Va. I'd be interested in info on both organizations. Again, thanks! sandra > From: Dar4me@aol.com > To: OHJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: Newspaper obits. > Date: Wednesday, February 03, 1999 6:56 PM > > Dear Judi: > > What Sandy said to the group was not offensive. Normally I would not post this sort of thing, but as some have seen fit to be nasty on the list, I feel it only appropriate to reply in kind....this is one of several emails I have received this evening, and let me say that I greatly appreciate them. What is wrong with you people....a woman emailed me on how to get hold of the Ohio Historic village, intimating that she thought the people who work there would check thru the newspapers on micro film for her. We can't expect people to do something like that for us, for free,....if they did that's all they'd get done! This was just my way of saying that we can't expect museum workers or librarians to do our own research for us. Now, what is your problem with this...or, what is your problem in general ! ---------- > From: SidandJer@aol.com > To: OHJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: Newspaper obits. > Date: Wednesday, February 03, 1999 4:01 PM > > In a message dated 2/3/99 6:17:01 AM Pacific Standard Time, ferg@wvinter.net > writes: > > << I wouldn't count on getting anything much done by mail....and certainly > not the newspapers...they are on film and I'm SURE no one is going to wade > through those for you. > Sandra >> > > This obviously is what was considered offensive--you presumed to know all > about the subject! > Judi > e
Hi all: The Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, Ohio does have some Jefferson County Newspapers on Micro Film and they are available on inter-library loan. The cost is nominal at $ 3.00 for a 30 day period. The OHS web site has all the necessary information. It also has some other Information that may be of Interest to Genealogists. Check out the web site it may be helpful & rewarding. Some times Navigating the site can be confusing !!!but also exciting. Joseph Patay in Toledo,OH :>)
Charlotte - I posted this question to the list last week but had no response so I will ask you because you seem to be very aware of genealogical resources in your county. My ggg/uncle, Cornelius UDELL, wrote "The Condensed History of Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio" in 1878. It was published by J. A. Howells and Company. I donated a copy of it to the Ashtabula Genealogical Society (or whatever they call themselves) ten or twelve years ago. (They were unaware of its existence). At that time I was told that the group was considering a reprint but have not heard if it was ever accomplished. My question is - did they do it and/or has it been indexed? These 116 pages contain an absolute wealth of genealogical information from the very earliest days of settlement until the date of publication. It contains several lists of names: physicians, attorneys, ministers , businessmen, farmers- when they came, where they came from, who they came with, who their children married and where they went. There are also dozens of sort of personal profiles, little stories - just a wonderful source. Although I am not ready to publicly state it, if someone can just tell me that there is an interest or a need, I intend to index it if it has not already been done, and do look-ups or just post the names to the list. If you could possibly check into this for me I would appreciate it very much. I will be up here in Montana until about the 15th of February then will be away for a few weeks. I wouldn't tackle the job until my return, shortly after the middle of March. Sincerely, Blanche *U*D*E*L*L* seeker Proud Sponsor of RootsWeb phl3851@montana.com
A man walks into a friend and sees that his friend's car is total loss and covered with leaves, grass, branches, dirt and blood. He asks his friend, "What's happened to your car?" "Well," the friend responses, "I ran into a lawyer". "OK," says the man, "that explains the blood... But what about the leaves, the grass, the branches and the dirt?" "Well, I had to chase him all through the park."
I accidently sent an email to the list that I intended to only send privately. I want to apologize for my mistake. I don't want to make anything worse. Hope I haven't has I enjoy reading the posts and find everyone helpful. I'm sorry, as I think that the messages should be about reseach and genalogy. Caryn
Where did you find the list of "Ancestors Proven by 1st Family Society Members?

Sandra, I just wanted to let you know that I and I'm sure most people on the list think you did nothing wrong at all. I felt bad for you when I saw you being attacked for trying to be helpful. Thanks for the help you give to the list. Caryn

Dear Judi: What Sandy said to the group was not offensive. It is the truth. Having done extensive research through the Ohio newspapers, unless a person can identify the exact date, exact newspaper in which the obit appears, and the exact page, it can be very difficult to locate the obit without hunting and pecking. The layouts of each paper are different and require you to "get a feel" for where you might find a particular obit. i.e. is it on the first page, buried in the farm page, listed on the bottom of the social page? Volunteers will look if you have specific instructions, but they cannot afford the time to do the searching. Unfortunately this is a fact of research. These lists are to help each other the best we can and to share information. There is no need to condemn anybody. If you take offense, please send a private e-mail to that person who offended you. The OHJEFFER-rootsweb list is not the place for that kind of thing. Sandy, thank you for being a helpful person. Without people like you, research wouldn't be as much fun and a heck of a lot more difficult. :-) Susan O'Brien Librarian General, Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars National Chm. In what city is the Schiappa Library? -----Original Message----- From: Julia A. She is also one of the few bonded genealogists who are permitted to work on the forgotten and lost records in the bowels of the Jefferson County Court House. As someone who spends much time in the Ohio Room (as it is my second home as well), I can not begin to tell you how helpful and extensive this collection is for the Ohio Valley. And Sandy Day, Ohio Room's Historical Librarian charges only $2.00 for searching fees. Where else can you obtain such material? She only does this for other genealogy addicts as she is the founder of the Jefferson County Chapter, OGS. And we all know how hard it is to research from afar. I'm sorry but I can't find that info...this place is a MESS! You'll have to do your own search via the internet. It would poabably be listed as The Ohio Historic Village...ask for the Library/genealogy. There is a web site I remember, and some searchable records, but, as I recall, the people I looked for in the records weren't there, and I know them to be on the records, and have documentation for it...so, don't assume that they are not listed just because these online records say they're not. I always put a few knowns through any of these records to sort of test for acuracy. I wouldn't count on getting anything much done by mail....and certainly not the newspapers...they are on film and I'm sure no one is going to wade through those for you. For a list of the newspapers at the Ohio Historical Society, check this page. http://dbs.ohiohistory.org/newspaper/home.cfm I know they do have some research volunteers, I see them at the microfilm and microfiche printers. I have no idea what the cost. But you can also order the newspapers on inter-library loan. Serena in Michigan
