Carroll Chroncile; Fri April 24, 1903 issue; This from the Steubenville Gazette will interest some people who have coal lands to sell; E.G.Evans, a prominent resident of Mt. Pleasant twonship, near Emerson, who did not sell his coal lands when the principal part of the coal in his vicinity was taken some years ago at $20.to $25. per acre, last week closed a deal for the coal underlying his farm of something like 200 acres, for $100 per acres, a total of about $20,000 for the coal alone. It certainly paid him to hold for a better price. JS _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com

Sandra - thanks very much for posting the site for CW photos - however, I have been going back to it every few hours and it continues to tell me to check URL. "HTTP error". Carol, My book on Bergholz mines does not mention a Moffat mine. My great aunt Annie Morrow was married to a Judge William Moffet of Carroll Co. Ohio. Is this your line? I agree wholeheartedly. Life's too short and our searches are way too long and complex for us to lose any of our members. Sandra, please do reconsider. This really has been a fun and informative forum. We need to keep up the constructive dialogue and get on with our searches. All of us, regardless of where we courrently reside, at one point had something in common......Jefferson County. Hopefully we can continue to learn from each other. Thanks for everyone's generous contributions to my tree. It'll never be done, but without your help it would be a very frustrating pursuit. jan kolb
Jim, If I, in any way, made you feel responsible for the unpleasantness, please know that it was certainly never my intention to do so. This was in no way your fault,(or mine, for that matter.), and no apology is necessary on your part. You merely asked a question and I had the misfortune to try to answer you. Ed, I would imagine that it world have been listed in the newspaper servicing the area, but one just never knows with obituaries...I am not familiar with the Adena area, and so have no idea what the newspaper would be...perhaps they would know at the Schiappa. Why don't you drop Sandy a note and ask her if she knows the name of the likely paper, and if they have the aprox dates you want. Was he killed in the Adena area, or somewhere else?...if elsewhere, check for newspapers in both places. I visited Columbus last fall, and the Archives at the Ohio Historic Village had an entire huge room full of filing cabinets with nothing but Ohio Newspapers on film. If Sandy can help you with the newspaper name, perhaps you could check to see what they might have on file there You know thedate, which is a big help. The whold library/archives at Columbus would bewell worth a visit for you! Good luck. Dear Sandra and all list members, A message noted that a microfilm of Ohio obits might be available thru the Historical Society of Ohio Village. My search is currently in 3 counties - Jefferson, Stark and Harrison - and this seemed a possible spot to find the information I am seeking. I had not seen 'Ohio Village' mentioned in any of the sites I have visited in the past and hoped to get more info on it. My question was for general information about a specific sourse - a web address, phone number or s-mail address. (My dream was for a web-searchable site address.) I thank all who responded and will contact the many places which were suggested. Having never lived in Ohio, I admit to having little knowledge of the state or any its counties. The Jeff Co list has given me a wealth of information on the history of steamboats, steel and iron works, logging, and more. Altho I have not found any of the specific people I am looking for, I do have a much better sense of their lives and the areas in which they lived. This is only because all of you have given so freely of your knowledge and suggestions. I subscribe to several lists and regularly visit the query pages of others and have found that this is undoubtly the most active and most informative list. I regret that my question occasioned such a firestorm and apologize to all. The decision of any to leave the list diminishes it and I hope that any who are considering doing so, especially you Sandra, would please reconsider. K.R. Schafer krschafer@worldnet.att.net
The Jefferson County Chapter, OGS web page has the list of First Family and Pioneer Family proven Ancestors at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohjefogs Just click on "DATA" in the navigation cell on the left, and then choose either Pioneer or First Family Ancestors. Clicking either "Societies" in the navigation cell or clicking on "Check "Societies" for membership information" will give you further information for application requirements. All OGS Chapters encourage family researchers to honor their ancestors by joining these societies. If you don't have an early ancestor in Jefferson Co., OH - check and see if another other county fits your early ancestor. And you can always apply for the state organization, "The Ohio Genealogical Society". (Their pins are beautiful!) You can find a link to their site on the JCC OGS site. We also recommend their State Conferences - great event every year in April. Happy Hunting, Julia
Dear Sandra, You don`t know me and I never asked for your help in the past. My name is John Foster and I have roots to Jefferson Co. as well. My ancestors are the Aten family and Wilsons,Johnsons,Carsons. Please don`t let one party spoil the good relations you had with many many others. I can understand how you feel and if you leave that (fool) who gave you some grief will just be as happy as a pig in a stye. Why leave because of one bad apple? I have read all the good things that you have done for people in the past as I get the Emails from the Jefferson Co. site. Please think it over because many people are on your side. Sincerly John M. Foster Chgo. IL.
Susan, I am leaving the Jeff. List and would apreciate it if you woud send the info on 1812 and the colonial Clergy groups directly to me. I have finished my research in Jeff. County and was just hanging around to do lookups, etc for others. But, I'd feel ill at ease now, answering anyone, wondering when someone was going to "jump" on me for something. Thanks for your support....it meant a lot, and thanks to those who have helped me with my own research. Sandra
No problem, Sandra Keep your chin up! :-) Susan
Susan , I noticed at the bottom of one of your post these societys. Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars Daughters of 1812 Nat'l Soc. of the Descendants of Colonial Clergy. I am particularly intrested in the Daughters of 1812 as I believe two of my ancesters fought in it. Are the Societies like DAR and if so, where might I find them? Thanks. Deb
Hello, Regarding the request of the First Family Society applicant with the proven ancestor, George Householder. Jefferson County Lines, Vol 7, No 2, Summer 1993, pg. 10 list: Sally Schiraldi, 7568 Bella Drive, Worthington, OH 43085 This newsletter gives the new approved members in every Summer Issue. The Householders were very early pioneers of Jefferson County and their number increased with each census. One our closest family friends was Thomas Householder who has since passed away. Very nice family. Good Luck, Julia
Hello Charlotte, Schiappa Library is located in Steubenville, OH, right next to the Fort Steuben Mall. Terri Menzel's Jeff. Co., OH Gen Web page at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/1261/ has a map which shows the street and location in Steubenville. You could always print it out and refer to it if you visit. (One difference on the map is that Stoney Hollow Road has been changed to University Blvd. We local historians aren't too pleased as there are several references to this well known pioneer trail - and the obvious fact that the University isn't actually located on that road.) And the JCC OGS website at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohjefogs click on "Collection" has the hours which Schiappa is opened. Wishing you a new found ancestor, Julia
