"I WANT" I want ancestors with names like Rudimentary Montagnard or Melchizenick von Steubenhoffmannschild or Spetznatz Giafortoni, not William Brown or John Hunter or Mary Abbott. I want ancestors who could read and write, had their children baptized in recognized houses of worship, went to school, purchased land, left detailed wills (naming a huge extended family as legatees), had their photographs taken once a year -- subsequently putting said pictures in elaborate isinglass frames annotated with calligraphic inscriptions, and carved voluble and informative inscriptions in their headstones. I want relatives who managed to bury their predecessors in established, still-extant (and indexed) cemeteries. I want family members who wrote memoirs, who enlisted in the military as officers and who served in strategically important (and well documented) skirmishes. I want relatives who served as councilmen, schoolteachers, county clerks and town historians. I want relatives who `religiously' wrote in the family Bible, journaling every little event and detailing the familial relationship of every visitor. In the case of immigrant progenitors, I want them to have arrived only in those years wherein passenger lists were indexed by National Archives, and I want them to have applied for citizenship, and to have done so only in those jurisdictions which have since established indices. I want relatives who were patriotic and clubby, who joined every patrimonial society they could find, who kept diaries, and listed all their addresses, who had paintings made of their houses, and who dated every piece of paper they touched. I want forebears who were wealthy enough to afford, and to keep for generations, the tribal homestead, and who left all the aforementioned pictures and diaries and journals intact in the library. But most of all, I want relatives I can FIND!!!
I thought this sounded familiar, Ed Durbin had sent me something about this a few weeks ago and I never go around to downloading and reading it. JWR

Hello All, Hopefully, this is the last message about Happy 99 and you can read all about it at: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/happy99.worm.html Julia

Janice, While working on Jefferson County, OH's early marriage book, we came across a number of License Applications without returns. This meant the couple applied for a marriage license, but did not actually marry. Perhaps this is the same as "Break of Promise" Julia
Hello, This Happy 99 is more of a nuisance and annoyance rather than a virus. After saving it, I scanned it for viruses before opening and it passed the test. And my computer did not show any viruses upon start up yesterday or this morning. It appears to be a poorly written part of an ad with an animated attachment - and automatically attaches itself to your outgoing email messages. You won't see it or be aware of it until a recipient brings it to your attention. And when you open your sent message - the Happy 99 attachment appears to your surprise. The following is a message which Rootsweb sent a friend of mine infected with Happy 99 when she tried sending a message to the Jefferson County OH message group: 'The message you submitted to this list (included above) wasn't sent to the list subscribers. RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text. -- The RootsWeb staff" And here is an example of the html code on Happy 99 which appears in messages as well: > begin 644 Happy99.exe > M35I0``(````$``\`__\``+@`````````0``:```````````````````````` > M``````````````````````$``+H0``X?M`G-(;@!3,TAD)!4:&ES('!R;V=R > M86T@;75S="!B92!R=6X@=6YD97(@5VEN,S(-"B0W```````````````````` > M```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` > M```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` > M````````````````````````````````````````55!%``!,`00`GR77C@`` > M````````X`".@0L!`AD`"@```!8```````````$````!`````@```$`````! > M```"```!``````````,`"@`````````%```$`````````@``````$```(``` > M```0```0````````$``````````````````#`$`#````````````````````" Hope this explains what I've encountered. Excellent advise from Charlie's about updating your virus scan software every 3 months. Did mine in Dec. 98 - almost time again. Wishing everyone a virus-free year! Julia

Cathy, I have only up to Book 7 for Jefferson County which covers 1850-1866 Book 8 has been published but I don't have them (2 volumes) yet. The Sheller marriage was not there. There are two Thomas Tilton marriages in Early Jefferson County Marriages up to 1838 Thomas Tilton to Rosanna Hindman Dec 1, 1810 Vol. 1 page 180 Thomas Tilton to Mary Jane Pennel Oct 25, 1838 Bridgette Osz, Member of Jefferson County, OGS From: Kathleen McCann <k.mccann@worldnet.att.net> To: OHJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Jefferson Co. I've been trying to find some kind of proof of this. I know it happened. Just need to find actual place. David Clemens Sheller, b. March 10, 1848, d. Oct. 4, 1900 & Elizabeth Ellen Tilton, d. Dec. 1880 They were said to have been married in Jefferson County, Ohio. Her father was Thomas Tilton, Jr., who died in 1865. Thanks a bunch. Kathy Sheller McCann
Someone recently asked where to locate info on mining accidents. While at the Allegheny Co, PA Genweb site, I found the following: Mining accident info - National Mine Health & Safety Academy, PO Box 1166, Beckley, WV 25802-1166 FAX 304-256-3372 Phone 304-256-3100 No web site was listed and I wasn't able to locate one. If you can give me a year to look in, I will look in index for the record, If I find it, I have it copied and send it to you. JS is correct it is a broken engagement.

Kathlena, thank you ever so much. I was able to pick up some middle initials, for several of them. I had most of the dates, but some with just a year. We were doing find until I reached the Drumm`s. I had Mahala J Kail married to Charles Drumm. And I also had a child of theirs as Emma L Drumm, born 1869. I wonder if Karl Drumm and Charles are the same person ? Anyway, let me give you another one. I have several Harper`s that married into the Kail family. The main one was Daniel Harper and Hannah Kail on Oct. 18, 1857. They are my great great grand parents. I have not been able to find anything on Daniel`s family before he married. Thank you, Dale
Sandra, Last week you looked up Wm. McLennan and Martha Matilda Saltsman and found each of their other marriages. I take it that means you didn't find a marriage between them at all. I didn't realize you had the whole state of Ohio marriages. That about wipes out my hopes of finding them, doesn't it. Does that CD include about all the marriages that took place during that time period? Would you mind checking for any marriages of Householders between about 1826 and 1850? Thanks, Janice
Julia: It has occurred to me that you may have felt that I was being critical when I referred to the "garbage" in that e-mail. I meant "garbage" because it was illegible and my e-mail was just to let you know that it couldn't be read. I assumed it was something on the Brashear family that had gotten messed up in transition. Sorry if I upset you. I certainly don't think you deliberately send out "garbage". Mary Szy
the marriages of jeff co book would be too early to contain a wedding of these 2, as it is 1789-1820. On the Ohio State marriages 1789-1850 CD I find both the names you mention, but married to 2 different people. Do you want them just in case...neither marriage is in Jeff Co.
