Hi, I'm new to the list and wanted to post my surname of interest. My GEORGEs actually lived in Washington County, PA and Carroll County, OH, but a number of aunts and uncles moved to Jefferson County. I'm hoping I might find someone on this list who can fill in some of the holes in my George research. I'm especially looking for information on Mitchell R. GEORGE who was born in Carroll Co. and moved to Jefferson Co., dying there around 1867. His son Lemuel C. continued to live in Jefferson Co, while his sons Robert M. and John A. moved back to Carroll Co. (I believe Mitchell is the brother of my gg- grandfather, Hamilton George.) Any one working on the George family? Diane
Hello Jean and Karen, In reference to my query on Jacob Naragong and land given to him for his services in the War of 1812. Thanks for the reference to the URL for the Buraue of Land Management: I tried this, but it seems to be telling me that their information starts with 1820. I need information on land acquired in 1813 probably. I do not have the range, towship or section number. I just know land was received from information on a pension file. Anymore ideas? Thanks Nicky
Hello, Can anyone tell me how to go about obtaining land record information in a short amount of time? Jacob NARAGONG was awarded some land for his service in the War of 1812. He entered the Navy under Commodore Perry and served under Capt. Thomas Latta and Col. John Andrews from Jefferson County in Dec. 1812 and was honorably discharge six months later for frost bite. I would like to know where this land is located. I believe it may currently be in Harrison County, but Harrison was apart of Jefferson at that time. Would the information be at the Steubenville Land Office, or where else would I search, and what is the best way to go about it? Thanks Nicky Eickerman Vancouver, Wa.
I am looking for information on any Irish GREENWOODS or MCCRORYs living in Jefferson Co., OH in the early-mid 1800's. We have so many mysteries to solve that this may be the only way. My Joseph GREENWOOD emigrated to the US from Ireland in late1845 according to application for citizenship. He ended up in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio from then until about 1853 when he moved to Iowa where he spent the rest of his life. He moved with Judge WILSON, a prominent lawyer, to Iowa. He may have been a bonded servant living with Judge WILSON during the time he spent in Steubenville as no records show up in his name. He is living in the same house with Judge Wilson after arriving in Iowa for the first year according to a city directory. Joseph was b. Feb 1823 and appears to have had a brother AND a cousin, both named Hugh GREENWOOD and both b. abt 1828. Other siblings may have come too but so far I haven't been able to find any. Joseph and both Hughs are buried in Union Cemetery in Steubenville. All of their bodies were brought to this cemetery from out of state, but records of origin are lost so we do not know where the two Hughs were brought from. Joseph was married for nearly 50 years in Iowa, and his wife is buried there, but his body was brought back to Ohio for burial beside a woman named Lillie MCCRORY b.1839-40(married to Thomas B. Taylor) who was also from Ireland and has a definite link to Joseph, possibly a niece or a ward of his. Joseph's funeral was held in her home prior to burial. One of the Hughs is also buried beside him. I feel there must have been a pact made between the three of them to be buried together. I would like to talk to anyone who has information on Irish GREENWOODs or MCCRORYs who emigrated around the 1840-1850 time frame. I have other information to share on these families. I am sorry for such a long posting, but it is a long story!! Thanks. Karla staudt@cptelco.net

This also might be of some use for research. There is a ships list digest that I have been monitoring for the last year and have found some useful information. TheShipsList-D@rootsweb.com -- Bill William L. Engelke El Toro, California wlengel@deltanet.com
