Does anyone know if the book, History of the Tenmile Country by H. L. Leckey is available anywhere either as an original or reprint. It has been recommended to me as a possible source of Swickard information but I have never seen it. I can't get down to the Steubenville Library anymore so guess I need to buy it to check it out. Thanks, Janice
Nicky, Here are two more aces I have up my sleeve. I think I might be about to play the one hiring this guy to get the copy for me Janice Here is the URL for a person who researches Land Patents in various states, including Ohio. He chages $35 per search and get photocopies of original documents. http://www.time-passages.com/dakota-homestead-records.html Here is the URL for the Deedmapper site that gives some really good info on land records with links to related sites. http://www.ultranet.com/~deeds/landref.htm
After spending a day in dusty files, it's good to have a smile. It sounds like a great story and thanks for sharing it. Bonnie, The old Allmon homestead in Nebo(use to be across the creek from Bergholz)now a part of Bergholz was still standing the last time I was down there. Not far from the old Scarlott place. The Allmons travel up the ridge and some settled around Scroggsfield. I've oftened wondered if your Adams group comes from old Martin Adams. If you ever find a connection to Martin I'll send you some stuff that you well love. Seems he owned everything in Jeff.Co. believe in Brush Creed twp. and anyway the stories go that the tax people wouldn't even go near him. Some great stories in Tale of Yellowcreek about him.The Allmons and Scarlott are connected a couple of times through marriage.Jean B. Wesley Scarlott married a Allmon and a Richard Scarlott married a Wood that was a grdau. of an Allmon. As they say, all kissing cousins around here. Keep me informed. Nicky, Karen, and Jean, I've been *listening* to your exchange about land records pre-1820. I have the same question as you do,Nicky. The National Archives has a place on their form for *Bounty Lands*. My request came back as not found although I know the Land was given for Revolutionary War Service. I thought my next step would be to call the Bureau of Land Management, Eastern States Office. Their address is: 7450 Boston Blvd., Springfield, VA 22153 Phone: 703-440-1700 BLM Office of Public Affairs, Department of the Interior's phone: 202-208-3435 Hopefully they can direct us to the right source. Any better suggestions, anyone? Janice
Here is a site for land patents and certificates. Glorecords.blm.gov/ Someone sent me this this week-end and it is wonderful.... Bettye Wingate
Yes, that's what I was going to suggest, the online search. Janice, Thank you for the address for the BLM with the phone number. I'll try seeking more information there. I might also try the National Archives once again. Last time it took so long to get any information, and then it wasn't all I'd hoped for. Thanks to everyone else for checking your Ohio sources for the land information on Jacob Naragong. I haven't found any of those specific local books in our library. Good Evening, Nicky Eickerman Vancouver, Wa.
