    3. Terri, I have been a member of this list since May 18, 1998 (see below), but on January 1st of this year my ISP transferred all accounts to USIT.NET and now have had to subscribe again (which I just did for the second time this morning since my mail was kicked back as a non-subscriber). Can you please help me straighten this out so I don't get double mailings. I had sent you a similar message yesterday with no response as yet. 3. Thanks a lot, Charlie, for sharing.. I've been sent the happy 99 attachment 3 times in the last week, so it's really making the rounds....I knew better than to open it, but am glad to have your program anyway! 2. Charlie Harris
    3. To Sandra and the list, Since this problem just doesn't seem to be going away on most Email ListServes...I'll offer some advice. If you don't already own a virus detection and removal software package, you do need to buy one soon....in the mean time for ONLY HAPPY99.EXE detection & removal, try the following solution... The following program is free and I've tried it several times on infected computers at work, IT DOES WORK. This single file program is small enough to store on a 3.5" diskette for sharing or storing a copy. The link to obtain the program is listed at the bottom of this message. This FREE program allows anyone to remove the Happy99 worm code from their computer. No skill level is required by the user. It also will report on all the Email addresses that you have sent the Virus/Worm code to. It will NOT protect you from future infections of HAPPY99, but you can continue to use it to remove HAPPY99 if you become infected again. Once you download the program, there is really nothing to do as the user but run the program. It will prompt you if the HAPPY99 code is present on your computer (it will also tell you if it's not). So you can run this to check and see if you're infected now, and to check in the future. Happy99 Cleaner 2.0 From: Craig Schmugar Minimum reqs. Windows 95/98/NT Approx. download time: 3 min. at 28.8 kbps Questions, or Comments? Send mail to: craig@craig.medill.nwu.edu Description: This program will safely remove the Happy99 virus from your machine and (if applicable) show you a list of email addresses that you sent the virus to. It will not protect you from further infection--it will only remove the virus from your system. For more information on the virus, please visit the developer's Web site. http://craig.medill.nwu.edu/happy99/ Let your friends know!!!

    3. If you receive any attachment called Happy 99 DO NOT OPEN IT! Immediately delete it, and then go to your deleted file and permanently get rid of it. Then, notify the person who sent it to you that they are infected with a virus and are infecting everyone they email. Tell them to notify everyone that they have emailed since they themselves received the attachment (apparently you can only "send" the virus once to an email address). then, email NO ONE until it is resolved.

    1. WWII Reg. Cards for Ohio Surnames Aa-Ab
    2. Karen Carlyle
    3. Hello, The second type of data in the NARA database that I thought might be of interest are scanned images of World War II Selective Service System Registration Cards for Ohio, FOR THE LAST NAMES STARTING WITH Aa-Ab. Obviously that's not a lot of names. But if you're one of the view, it's nice to see the both sides of the card with the signature, etc. I did some searches, using either a last name by itself, a county name by itself, or both as the keywords. For Jefferson Co. alone I got the last names ABBOTT, ABDELLA, ABELS, ABER, ABEREGG, ABERHART, ABOUD, ABRAHAM and ABRAM. To get to this site, 1. Go to http://www.nara.gov/nara/searchnail.html 2. Select NAIL Digital Copies Search 3. Enter the following parameters: Keywords: whatever you want Media Type: "Textual Records" NARA Units: "NARA's Great Lakes Region (Chicago, IL)" 4. Click on 'Submit Search'. 5. Select 'Display results'. Hope someone finds a relative here! Karen

    1. 1830 petition by Steubenville 'ladies'
    2. Karen Carlyle
    3. Hello, I was just checking out some of the things at the NARA website, and I found two items that might be of interest to this list. I'll describe the other in a second note. The first is a scanned image of a petition to the Congress entitled: "Memorial from the ladies of Steubenville, Ohio, protesting Indian removal." It is dated Feb. 15, 1830, according to the description. At the bottom are the signatures of a number of women. Some of the surnames are NORTON, WILSON, WOODS, BEATTY, ROGERS and more. It's hard to read all of them. If one of your ancestors is there, you'll see her signature. But even if you don't find one, or have any there at that time, it's worth a look though, just because of the clarity and the content and the age!! To see the petition, follow these steps: 1. Go to http://www.nara.gov/nara/searchnail.html 2. Select "NAIL Digital Copies Search" 3. Search using the following parameters: Keywords: "Steubenville" Media Type: "All Media" NARA Unit: "Center for Legislative Archives (Washington, D.C.)" 4. Click on 'Submit Search', and you should have one result, the petition. 5. Select 'Display results'. Only 100 sessions can be active at one time, so if you can't get to NAIL, try again later. Enjoy! Karen C.

    1. Pioneer Tombstone of Benj. Hall found in Jefferson Co., OH
    2. Julia A. (Heaton)Krutilla
    3. Hello, The following is an abstracted message from Sandy Day regarding a newly found and registered cemetery. Just in case there are some Hall researchers: "A semi regular patron was in the Ohio Room today and she saw our notice in the newspaper about us wanting info on old and forgotten cemeteries. She located part of what used to be a small cemetery down by Brilliant. She brought me a photo of the tombstone and it is very readable. It is actually in what used to be called Beach Flats in Wells Twp. She said she heard that there once were more tombstones in that vicinity but she did not see any. This patron said that logging trucks were running all over the place there and she and her sister moved the tombstone away from the "road" hoping that could save it from being run over. The info on the stone reads: In Memory of Benjamin Hall, who departed this life July 27th 1839, aged 65 years 4 months" Sandy has also contact Wells Twp. officials in hopes of protecting this early graveyard. The woman also stated that there were many stones years ago when she walked the area but only found two when she visited this site in the fall of 98. Julia

    1. Parlett Mine No. 3, Wayne Coal Co.
    2. David McClain
    3. >From the Steubenville (Ohio) Herald Star, Wed., June 28, 1922: "Fatal Shooting at Parlett Mine. Deputy Sheriff Killed. Athur McClain is fatally wounded at Parlett Mine when riot gun in hands of Deputy R.R. Cunningham was accidentally discharged last night. Arthur McClain, aged 33 years, was shot and fatally wounded by the accidental discharge of a riot gun in the hands of R.R. (Rook) Cunningham at Parlett Mine No. 3 of the Wayne Coal Company near the Harrison County line Tuesday night." "Both men were special deputy sheriffs in the employ of the coal company and were engaged in guarding the company's property. According to information received by Sheriff Edward Lucas, who investigated the shooting, the two men were "buddies" and were sitting on the porch of a bunk house on the Wayne property during the severe storm of last night. Cunningham was armed with a riot gun and was handling it while talking with McClain. In some way he accidentally discharged the weapon and the charge struck McClain in the right side, inflicting a fatal wound. The shot tore a gaping hole in his side and penetrated vital organs." "McClain was given first aid at the mine camp and as soon as the storm and condition of the roads would permit, he was brought to the Ohio Valley hospital in this city. He was unconscious when he arrived at the institution and never regained consciousness." "Shortly after the accident however, McClain is said to have made a statement to mine officials, absolving Cunningham from all blame and making it clear that the shooting was an accident." "McClain died at the Ohio Valley hospital at 1:15 p.m. His remains were taken to Mettenberger's funeral home and prepared for burial." "The victim of the accident had been serving as a deputy sheriff at the Wayne Coal Company's property since May 27th. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Plummer McClain of this city and is survived by two children and several brothers and sisters." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- [editorial note from David McClain] Actually, Arthur was survived by 4 children, one of them being my father, Charles McClain, who was 7 at the time.] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- >From the Steubenville Herald Star, July 1, 1922: "Services for the late Arthur McLain were held Friday afternoon from the Mettenberger funeral home at 2:30 o-clock. Rev. Johnson of the Christian Church officiated. The pall bearers were George McLeish, James McLeish, Ross Stone, Arch L. Bell, Ben Crawford, Frank Maple. Interment in Union cemetery." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Does anyone have any more information pertaining to this accident or about any of the individuals mentioned in the articles? 3. Jim The 1871 Jeff. Co. Atlas shows two N. Peoples: one in Saline Twp. (11 1/2 acres) a little south of Port Homer P.O. The other in Wayne Twp. (55 a.) in the northeast corner at the boundary with Harrison Co. The index indicates both are 'N' Peoples, but it is really hard to read the Wayne Co. name on the map. It has 'Mrs.' below the name.
