Now and then there are internet bargains to get to London, for only about 300.00 but I haven't reached a point where I would know what to look for after I got there. Can't seem to get info to jump the ocean. If I ever do, I will look for the airfare bargains. Bobbie >From: "Julia A. Hi Bobbie & Judie, Unfortunately, clicking on anything won't take us to England. Oh, if it were only that simple - I'd be there now! That list is the newest books purchased for the Ohio Room Collection at Schiappa Library. All new since Feb. 1, 1999. I post them for the convenience of those within traveling distance of the library. And should have included the webpage address, too. Sorry. You can check the rest of the collection which pertains to Jeff. Co., OH at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohjefogs/ohioroom.htm Keep in mind there are over 3,200 books all pertaining to genealogy. But, I think we should still find a volunteer to find out just how cheaply we can ALL go to England. ;) Happy Hunting, Julia
Hi Helen, Thanks for your reply. I only have the names on the census, and the fact that Marie Ross Thompson called herself, Mariah. I wonder if they left OH. or if the younger ones were in the OH civil war effort. Haven't found anything else. Don't know what church they went to, tho the later family was Presbyterian. Was there a Presbyterina Church in 1840 - 50 in Steubenville. Would there be a marriage record in that church for 2 Jun 1827 when she and John Thompson married? How can I access that church? Bobbie - There are lots and lots of Thompsons in Doyle's history and in the Tombstone book, but I see nothing that relates directly to your names. I don't believe that they required births to be registered before that date. Maybe church records, if they exist? JR
I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I can request copies of birth certificates pre-1867. I am trying to find ones from 1840's. The only places I have found are 1867-1908 and 1908-present. These people were born in Jefferson County. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Robin L. Stepp Tulsa, OK Rlsd21@AOL.com
Greetings, I noticed recently several references to the Thompson line in the early 1800's. It's a wild shot, BUT my Robert Thompson died in Morrow County, Ohio in early 1800's. The census says he was born in Pennsylvania. His daughter, Rebecca Thompson Stilley was born about 1777 in Pennsylvania. The link to Jefferson County is that several other families that tie into my genealogy at this time moved from Jefferson County to Morrow or Knox County about the same time. By some chance do you or any of the other Thompson researchers have a clue for me? Thanks, Jim Kimble

Hi, I just joined this list a few weeks ago and noticed you talking about Smith. My GGGpa Ellis C. SMITH married Sarah Jane Davis in Smithfield, Jefferson County, Ohio in 19 February 1849. His unknown parents were born in Maryland as was he according to his Civil War papers Does he sound familiar to any of you SMITH researchers? Suzanne
>I see in the 1820 census index that a Samuel Smith lived in Smithfield . Ron, In Doyle's History of Steubenville and Jefferson County, 1910 on pg. 212 in the section talking about the *laying out of roads*: June, 1807. Beginning at the place where the road from Baldwin Parson's mill intersects road from Charles Town to Cadiz, about two and one-half miles from Cadiz; thence past the plantation of Morris West on road from Cadiz to Steubenville; past the plantation of Samuel Smith; to intersect the road leading down dividing ridge between Stillwater Cannotton [Connotton] at the plantation of Otha Baker, William Moore, Samuel Osborn, Henry Hemry, viewers, and William Holson, surveyor. On pg. 862 (biographies) Under the Biography of C. C. Whitworth: ...Mr. Whitworth received his education in the svchools of Dalton, and on August 4, 1892, he was united in marriage with Louella Smith, the daughter of Samuel and Mary A. (Sawvel) Smith. History of Smithfield Twp. is on pg. 501, is ten pages long, and mentions Smithfield Village, York and Adena as towns in the townships. Hope something fits, Janice
Ron; Saw your message. Maybe we can help each other. I'am searching for Chaney info. According to census records; 1820c there was a Charles Chaney living in Jefferson Co.O. 1850c Charles was listed as 69 and living with his son-in-law SAMUEL SMITH. Samuel's wife's name wasn't clear, but I thought it looked like Mollie. I need to know if Charles had a brother William? Please let me know if any of this has any meaning to you. Loretta Chaney Mohler

Janice, Thanks for the information. I will see if I can get a copy of this book. I can't connect any of the names at this time. I just received a message from Loretta Mohler asking about Samuel Smith. I guess she should get this same message. I appreciate you going to all the trouble to get this information. I will keep it on file. Maybe down the line everything will fall in place. Thanks, Ron Smith
