I am a recent subscriber to OHJEFFER-L, and I find it to be one of the more active groups. Some of the information I receive is very interesting. It seems everyone is helping to find information. My family is Warren -- actually two different Warren's. My Grandmother's family is from northeastern Ohio, and I have traced my grandfathers family back to Jefferson County, I beleive to Cross Creek. The 1850 census list several William Warren's married to Rebbecca, and one other William Warren (knox -1003) William (86)&Rebbecca (78) in (knox1003). I beleive my Gggrandfather is the William (67) and Rebbecca (62) in (cross creek183) as they have children -Issac -28, Harriett -23, George -20, & Simon -18 listed. My ggrandfather William is not listed as he has married a Rachael McConnell, and is supposed to be in Hancock County, Ohio, but he did have siblings with those names. All of these afore mentioned William - Rebbecca Warren's were born in Pennsylvania,as were their wives. My Ggrandfather William was born in Ohio in 1817. My questions are --Is the William Warren in Knox Twp related to the William Warren in Cross Creek? He is old enough to be his father - or brother? Does anyone have any information on what part of Pennsylvania did any of these Warren's come from. It would have been in the late 1790's or early 1800's. I see there is a Warrentown in Jefferson County -- is there any connection to these early Warren's. Is there any information on any of the children of Wm & Rebbecca, that I mentioned. Any information would be appreciated. I plan to make a trip to Jefferson County, this summer. Any information on where I might find the answers to my questions, when I get there. I am taking a 2 week vacation, and when I return , I am looking forward to some info. Thank You. ------- Ford E Warren
There's a lot of fascinating and helpful information circulated through the listservs, but also a lot of messages which would be better sent to a private individual rather than to all of us. I'm thinking of "thank you" notes, etc. which are really directed to just one person. I'm suggesting that all of us include our own e-mail address on each message so that, when appropriate, another individual can send the reply directly to the interested party rather than to everybody. That means that sometimes, instead of routinely hitting the "reply" button, we should type in the specific name of the person who wrote the note. Messages which are of general interest should, of course, still be sent to the entire list. This is not said to discourage anybody, but when you get as much mail as I do it can get to be overwhelming. I really do appreciate the generosity of listserv members, and I hope my suggestion will help to reduce the load for all of us. Happy Easter, everybody! David C. McClain dmcclain@bbc.edu
Great suggestion. I will try to do that and hope the others do too. Thanks for everything. Pat Patricia Patterson Allen in Orlando
Hi, As most of you know, I have been the County Coordinator for the Jefferson CO. OHGenWeb site since it began in 1996. Since that time the page has grown by leaps and bounds. But, like all good projects it is really getting too large for one person. I am looking for one or two Assistant County Coordinators. The number one requirement is that you are cheap (in other words FREE!!). GenWeb is a strictly volunteer project!! I am hoping to find someone willing to take over the cemetery pages and/ or the Surnames and Queries. I am sure that we can work out a way for the pages to remain at their current location or they may be moved to another server with a pointer page or link from the current site. I would like to devote more of my time to indexing the site and getting more data on line for researchers. Anyone interested or wanting more information on what would be involved, please e-mail me privately at menzel@coastalnet.com Thanks for your time, Terri -- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Researching HUBBARD,LANAGHAN,JAMES,MENZEL,HAMROCK,GEARY, My Family Tree http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/1261/family/myfamily.htm Jefferson Co. To all searchers. It sure would be a great help if everyone would give a complete subject line to their queries. Then if the name matches, but the date is 100 years off or the state is impossible, we wouldn't have to read that one. Lots of researchers have e-mail browsers that takes forever to get the message up and then forever to delete. If the search is completely out of possibility, we would rather know in the subject than after a 15 min search, since some of us get about 50 or more queries a day. Thanks for your help. Hello All, For those of you who live in the area, another historic walk is planned - located in Eldersville, Washington Co., PA; approximately a 20 minutes drive from Steubenville. Eldersville was a community often included in the early Steubenville newspapers as many Jeffersonians had relatives there. You might call it a suburb of Steubenville. I'll include the news release here for your convenience, and it is also posted on the Jefferson County Chapter, OGS web page under "Calendar" for any future interest. "APRIL 17, 1999 - The annual walk to Kidd's Mill, Washington Co., PA is set for Saturday, April 17th, beginning at Noon. Meet at Heritage Hall, Eldersville, PA where the doors will open at 10 a.m. Food by the Jefferson Township Historical Society will be available throughout the day. Robert Irwin will narrate the history along the walk. He and his son and grandson will conduct a brief service at the site of Pine Grove Presybterian Church. June Campbell Grossman will relate the history of the church that has been gone for over a century. Carl Patsche will elaborate on the wild flowers, trees and plants along the way. Due to poor condition of the last section of the road, it is possible that no wagon or other vehicle will be able to transport walkers. It will be necessary also to wade the creek in at least two areas. Therefore, appropriate clothing and footwear should be considered. Those attending are welcome to bring old pictures, maps, deeds, cameras, tape recorders, and lap-top computers. Visiting and conversation will also be the order of the day. For further info call - 724-947-3229 or 724-947-3983." This is a highly recommended tour! And the sisters, Kathryn Campbell Slasor and June Campbell Slasor always present an indepth study on the early pioneers of the area. A Happy Easter to All, JEFFERSON COUNTY CHAPTER, OGS http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohjefogs Julia A. Krutilla fkrutill@weir.net
Looking for info on the BARRON family of Jefferson and Belmont counties. David married Elizabeth CAPSTICK in Jefferson county in 1840 (either Jan or Mar 23, depending on which date on the marriage certificate you believe). William testified for Elizabeth's son Jonathan's (now spelled CAPSTACK)naturalization in Belmont county in 1846, and was a 32-year-old member of his household on the 1850 census I wondered if anyone knows more about the Barrons, especially where they were from (as neither appears by name on censuses prior to 1850), and whether (as I assume) and how that David and William were related. Thanks, -- Tim Capstack lkm1@cec.wustl.edu http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Pier/8775/capstack.html (genealogical)
This maybe a distant cousin, but the dates don't match with my names. I will continue to check though. We too are interested in the Taylors in Jefferson County and have just started to search this line. I have 2 ggg grandparents who were brother and sister - Edward Taylor (about 1762-8 Feb 1839) and Margaret (Taylor) Howden (1766-1841). They were children of Peter Taylor, believed born near Swanlinbar, County Cavan, Ireland. Edward Taylor married Elenor Hewit and they are buried in Mt Tabor Cemetery, Island Creek Twp, Jefferson Co, OH. Margaret married Andrew Howden and lived and died in Washington Co, PA near Beallsville. Edward and Eleanor (Hewit) Taylor had the following children: William; James; John; Edward; Thomas; Mary; Jane; Margaret; Eliza; Anna. Anna (1806-1884) who married James Crawford (1801- 1872) was my gg grandmother. Would be glad to hear from anyone with connections to this family. Doyle Ekey
Thankyou Sandra John Foster

Sandra and Judie, Thanks for the look-ups. Judie: Although that wasn't what I was looking for, it sounds as though there may be some new info here for me. Does the index have any dates, locations or other specifics on John Tope and Mary Allen? There are a number of John Tope's, but I don't have any with a Mary Allen. Sandra: Elizabeth Bower was George Tope Sr's (b.1761) second wife (side note: he had twenty-four kids; twelve by each!). George II (b.1782) married Mrs. Elizabeth Everhart Allbaugh; he was a son of George Sr and Catherine. George II did have a brother named Jacob (b.1801), but the Jacob that married Sally Everhart may have been one of his two cousins also named Jacob. Thanks. I am searching for information regarding the first wife of George TOPE (b.1761). Her name may have been Catherine STRADDLER or STRADLER. We do not have the date of their marriage, but it probably took place about 1780 and perhaps near Redstone, Fayette County PA as that was where the Topes resided prior to 1800. In about 1800 they moved to a farm about two miles east of Salem, Jefferson County Ohio, and then a year or so later to about a mile and a half west of Richmond. We believe that Catherine passed away within the first couple years of arriving in Ohio and when they lived at one of these locations. We have no information on Catherine or her family. Does anyone have any burial or cemetary records or any other records listing a Catherine Tope in Jefferson County? Thanks for any help. David Brown
