Beryl, Thank you for the kind offer! Would you please check for a Margaret (Carroll) Ferguson, wife of William Ferguson, as well as William Ferguson? They would have been married ca 1795 in Washington County, PA. William was born 1778 in Washington County, PA and moved to Jefferson County in 1803. William and Margaret's children were: Robert (b. 1800 and my line), Samuel, Mary, Sarah, Bathia, Margaret, Rachel and James. Beryl, Would you look for Isaac E. Carson? Probably came there after 1850 & may have died there before 1876 when the rest of the family went to Iowa. His wife was Margaret & children were George W., John, Isaac B., Mary, James, Robert & Elizabeth. Thank you so much. Hi Everyone, My ancestors were pioneers of Ohio and some lines of our family moved to Jefferson Co. Our line moved to northern Ohio from Pennsylvania and Maryland. Other lines of our family moved to Ohio from Virginia and W. Virginia. Some of our names are DAGUE (DAGE, DEG, DEEGEN), SWINEHART (SWEINHARDT, SWIHART), HARSH (HIRSCH, HEARSH), GIFT, SMITH, ARNOLD, NEFF, SCHMIDT, GEYSLER, GILBERT, HOOVER, SWAGLER, HOWE, LABAR (LAWAR, LABARRE), FLICKINGER and, SWICKARD. I don't know all of our surnames because maternal names are often lost in families and of course, I don't know the surnames of all our Ohio relatives I am writing to ask if any of you know of a hereditary blood disorder in your family called Hereditary Sphereocytosis. My hematologist said that 50% of my relatives probably have this disorder because it is autosomal dominant. Sometimes this disease can be silent, as it had been in my family until my mother's cousin died of it (probably of a ruptured spleen) and her son and I were diagnosed with it and had spleenectomies. Sometimes Hereditary Sphererocytosis is so subtle, it can't be seen on a regular red-blood count smear. Apparently a regular RBC smear doesn't pick it up in our in our family, but a hematologist will know what to do to be sure. My hematologist said that he recently had a patient in his seventies who had no idea that he had this blood disorder until tests picked it up. Because even those who have the more serious form of the disease can have subtle symptoms, it can be dangerous if someone has it and doesn't know it. Hereditary Sphereocytosis is characterized by small, fragile, sphere-shaped red corpuscles and most people afflicted with it are of northwestern European descent. Sometimes anemia and jaundice are obvious with this disease, but sometimes, those symptoms are subtle, even in those who have the more serious form of the disease. This has been the case in our family. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who might have this disease in their families. One reason is that my hematologist has found some mysteries associated with my form of Hereditary Sphererocytosis that I would like to compare with others who may have some of the same difficulties. Another is this could be a great way to find cousins who have so far been lost because maternal names change and we lose track of family lines. This is a relatively rare disease, so it may be a good first step in finding cousins. Cathy Martin ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! If you have Pennsylvania connections you might find something here -- The University of Pittsburgh Library currently has 293 books covering area history scanned and on line. I didn't have time to explore fully but noticed some Westmoreland and Washington County books included. The site has a fully searchable text feature. A really GREAT site! http://bigfoot.library.pitt.edu/pittsburgh/search.html Hope everybody finds somebody! Janice
I have that wonderfully interesting book, The History of Jefferson & Belmont Counties, on interlibrary loan for about 6 weeks, and I would be happy to look up anything you are certain in within the book. Someone suggested the interlibrary loan, and thanks for that suggestion. Beryl, Salt Lake City

Check the most recent update of Norton's Symantic and you will find that Shackwave is indeed listed as a recently discovered virus. Use the keyword "shockwave" to find its description in the Virus Encyclopedia. It is listed under an alternate name as well. You can also check the computing site at U of Kansas to find this virus description. I think it may be appropriate to post a warning IF someone has reason to believe that messages on this particular listserv may be affected. Otherwise it may not be appropriate, because Symantac has about 48,000 virus definitions listed! It is important to keep your virus-checking software up to date. M. Please don't send these things to the list. I checked with Symantec (Norten Anti-virus) and there was no such virus listed. What you are sending to the list may cause someone to actually acquire a virus, trying to check it out. Also, it doesn't make much sense to me what you wrote (or forwarded.)

http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/metro/obituaries/A13925-2000Dec2.html Harley Warrick Associated Press Saturday , December 2, 2000 ; Page B05 BELMONT, Ohio Harley Warrick, 76, who was among a dozen sign painters who advertised the joys of chewing tobacco on the side of thousands of Appalachian and Midwestern barns, died of an aneurysm Nov. 24 at a hospital in Wheeling, W.Va. He and his fellow barn painters fanned out over America's heartland in teams of two, sometimes for months at a time, to cover rough, splintered wood with black, white and yellow signs reading, "CHEW MAIL POUCH TOBACCO. TREAT YOURSELF TO THE BEST." "They just traveled from town to town like traveling salesmen or hobos. They lived cheap; maybe they'd sleep in a truck or find a cheap hotel. They'd do a sign in maybe a half-day," said Appalachian historian Danny Fulks. Though Mr. Warrick officially retired about seven years ago, he continued to work until October, when he put on his coveralls for a final repaint on a sign he made about 20 years ago in his home town of Belmont, an Ohio River town across from Wheeling. "A lot of local fans came out to watch him and talk to him. That was one of the nice things about Harley, he always enjoyed talking to the public," said Mike Stewart, a park manager. Mr. Warrick spent 55 years painting or retouching many of 4,000 Mail Pouch signs, working in 13 states from Michigan to Missouri to New York. "The first thousand were a little rough, and after that, you got the hang of it," he said in a 1997 interview. When he was 21, Mr. Warrick fell in with a team of sign painters working on his family's dairy barn. "I was just talking away with them, and they said, 'We need somebody on one of our crews,' " he said. "I thought, 'That's better than milking 27 head of Jerseys every night and morning.' " Mr. Warrick painted without using a guide, starting with the 'E' in CHEW and working six days a week, mixing colors in five-gallon kegs for $32 a week. With the help of an assistant, he could paint a sign in about six hours, sometimes completing two barns a day, and he could repaint up to five barns a day. "He could tell you a story for each barn he painted," said Craig Nickerson, of Swisher International Inc., which produces the Mail Pouch brand. The company stopped repainting barns in 1969, but Mr. Warrick continued upgrading the signs after they were designated national landmarks. "He would always say if you could find a job that you would do without being paid, that's what you should do," said his daughter, Lena Williams. "I don't think he really thought about it as work. It was just what he did."

Hello and Happy Healthy Holidays! Would anyone have information on thei H.B. DAVIS who was mentioned in the Moir book, "Tombstone inscriptions and Family Records of Jefferson Co. OH? He is only there as a second husband of Catherine Moore McCann. I would think somewhere might be a list of him with his children from his first marriage, or possibly their marriage. Looking for information on the siblings of Robert TRACY, father of William TRACY who appears in the 1850 census of Jefferson Co., Cross Creek. Robert is 49 born in Ireland. His son William is 15 born in Ohio. Family stories indicate that Robert was one of 5 brothers who came to the U.S. during the Famine. Any help appreciated. Donna Wolf
