    3. Hi Jeff Co. Researchers, I'd like to correspond with researchers of the following surnames: LIVINGSTON/LEVINSTON Smithfield, Island Creek, Warren, Salem Townships SANDS (married Catherine Livingston, b. 1804) VIERS (Eleanor Viers m. William Levingston Nov 20, 1810) WATTS (Jeanette Watts, second wife of William Manson Livingston b. 1814) DELANEY (Mary Ann Livingston b. ca 1800, m. a DELANEY) MCCANCE (Jane, b. 1787, m. William A. Levingston b. 1784, on Nov 16, 1809 There were at least two persons by the name of William Levingston. One resided 6 miles west of Stuebenville on July 5, 1816, when a notice of a strayed mare was published in the paper by William Livingston. "Deliver to Brice W. Viers of New Salem". This may have been the father of Eleanor Viers, but it is more likely her brother. If it was her brother, she was the d/o Nehemiah Viers of Frederick Co. MD, and born in 1765. (This may have been her second marriage.) In Jefferson Co. OH, or Belmont Co. OH., possibly in Fayette Co. PA bef. Special thanks to those of you who have responded to look up requests. I live in NE OK, and the availabilty of census microfilm for Northern States in limited. The public library in Muskogee has excellent collections for the southern states (AR, MO, MS, OK, TX, LA, AL, TN, KY). If I can be of help to anyone researching these states, please let me know. Best wishes, Pam Ingle

    1. [ohjeffer] Re: EWING in Irondale
    2. Karen Carlyle
    3. Tom, Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm afraid I can't add much. In the index to 1871 atlas James Ewing is the only Ewing in Irondale. Only 2 other Ewings are listed for Jefferson Co., a W. Ewing in Smithfield Twp. and an M. Ewing in Wells Twp. The index only lists property owners so of course there could be others in the county at the time. Perhaps you could write to Sandy Day at the Schiappa Branch of the Jeff. Co. Library asking her to check for a James Ewing in the 1870 census in Irondale, or if there are other Ewings there. The cost for this service nominal. If you're not familiar with this service, please look at the following website. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohjefogs/collection.htm Or perhaps other listers have other resources that might help.... 1. [ohjeffer] Did John Kuester marry Maple sisters?
    2. Please help me figure out this family. On the 1910 census John Kuester is married to Louella Maple and living in New Cumberland, Hancock Co., West Virginia. In 1970, her sister Lillian Mae Maple Kuester's obit says that Lillian's second husband, John Kuester, died in 1953. Were they both married to the same man? When did Louella die? Lillian's first husband was Thomas J. Cooper and he died in 1935. Lillian's son, William Cooper's obit mentions a brother Dale Kuester and sister Earla Kuester. They were not mentioned in Lillian's obit. Are they Louella's children? Serena in Michigan [email protected]

    3. Here is the scoop on Hammondsville, Irondale, Wellsville, etc brick yards and clay pits I promised you. This is from a man who was born in Hammondsville around 1938 and has lived and worked in the area all his life. Janice ============ Dando`s [Hammondsville] sells brick occasionally, but doesn't make brick anymore. They are just selling the stock from when they did run. There was a clay mine on the Dando works. McLeans was in Cream City which was considered Irondale and it also had a clay mine with it. Salsebury above Irondale was another one ,they also had their own clay mine. The one just as you went in Wellsville was the Buckeye plant, it had it's own mine. And as you went out of Wellsville going to East Liverpool was the Champeon plant, it didn`t have it's own mine. There was one in Vanport, PA (right above Midland, PA). Then they had a clay mine right at the bottom of rt. 45 just out of Wellsville right up from the Dairy Queen. They started it in the early 1950s, but it is closed now. P.S. The mine that was in Hammondsville was suppose to run clear back in under Rt. 39 in back of Wellsville several miles.

    2. Hi Janice, I just read about Saline Township on your site. I can't believe it-I grew up in Stratton, which is below Port Homer. My dad's family ran a post office and store in Port Homer long ago-the Crawford family. My Crawford ancestor-James-came from western Pa. in the early 1800's with his wife and settled in Jefferson County. It was neat to see the description of Yellow Creek, as my dad owned a small cottage on a tributary of that creek. I look forward to reading more!! 2. I used to live near Hammondsville, and there was a brickworks on rte. 213, just before getting into Hammondsville. I think that it was 213 south. Don't remember the name of the place, and it is gone now. ----- Original Message ----- From: Karen Carlyle To: [email protected] Sent: 1/9/01 12:30:28 AM Subject: [ohjeffer] re:Irondale Potteries Tom, Of course I can't be sure where Harry Ewing may have worked, but according to my 1871 atlas of Jeff. Co., the closest brickworks to Irondale was the Hammondsville Coal Fire and Brick Co. It's not clear where the factory was as this label is placed on land both north and south of Hammondsville. The part north of Hammondsville shows coal so perhaps that was just a mining operation, not sure. Incidentally there is a James Ewing listed for Irondale. Most of the town is owned by Morgan and Hunter which is, not surprisingly, an iron factory. Keep in mind that Columbiana Co. which is just north of there, also had lots of potteries. Hope this helps, Karen - ------------------------------- Subject: Re: [ohjeffer] Re: Jefferson Co. 3. There were quite a few potteries and brick works in Jefferson Co. I have some copied pages from a book called "History of Belmont and Jefferson Counties". The companies it lists are mostly brickworks or terra cotta pipe manufacturers. In addition I found several books on Toronto Ohio at the Schiappa branch in Steubenville that discuss the clay industry in the region. I would suggest you go to (or write) this branch for more info. Your cousin is fortunate to have the bowl. I would love to have something from my ancestor's factory. Good luck!
