Hi all, Still working on those very elusive BERTRUCHI's and need some help with addresses: One could someone give me the name, addresses and phone numbers for the 2 closest cemeteries, funeral homes, and catholic churches to 307 S. 6th Street. This is the address where Joseph (Jessie) and Leonard BERTRUCHI lived according to the 1924 city directory. Also, does someone local know if that address still exist? If so, would it be possible to also obtain from the phone book listings for say 3-4 neighbors? People who lived in close proximity? Who knows there history of Steubenville well? Was there a Catholic High School in the early 1900's, 1910, 1915 ish time period? If so, could I also have that name and address; and if not the public high school. Trains, what trains would have been big in the area during that time frame? As you can see, I'm trying to think of some less obvious ways to obtain some information. Family history says the people were, says they lived there for some time; but NOTHING I'm finding(which has been slighly more than nothing) indicates that. Only notations I've been able to find is a listing in the 1920 census, and one notation in the 1924 city directory; AND.............The people listed weren't even the same people. Hi Maryann, I wouldn't mind seeing what you have for a few generations of descendants for Jacob & Belitje. I also don't mind sending you my own GEDCOM w/ the info I have on the family. In a nutshell (if there is such a thing for this tangled bunch!), I know that Beletje Davids & my ancestor John Courtright were cousins. Beletje was the d/o Salomon Davids & Lea Decker, Lea was the d/o Jacob Jans Decker & Antje Cortright. Antje was the d/o Hendrick Jansen Cortright & Catherine Hansen Weber, who are also the great-great grandparents of my John Courtright. All these people are found in the Minisink Dutch Reformed Church records. Jacob Figley & family are found w/ their children the same time frame as John Courtrights parents (John Cortright & Susanna Kittle) in the church records. I know there were many Davis' around the Ohio Valley near John Courtright & Jacob Figley. How many, if any, were relatives of Beletje Davids? Did any of her siblings move to the OV? I know that her sister Lea Davids married Jeremiah KITTLE, brother of Susanna Kittle my John Courtrights mother. (I told you this was a tangled bunch!) I also know that her brother Jonas Davis/Davids moved to Beaver Co., PA but supposedly they had no children : 1888 Beaver County History book. JAMES C. RICHIE, farmer, ...was b. in Hopewell Township, March 10, 1824...Robert, father of J.C(Richie) ...became an orphan in early childhood and was raised by his aunt and uncle, JONAS and JEANETTE DAVIS. They settled in Hopewell Twp. in 1796. Robert was eighteen years old, and as they (the Davis) had no children he (Robert Richie) inherited the homestead. Another sister Elizabeth Davids married Jonas Cortright, another cousin, but they are found still in Sussex co., NJ for the 1850 census. However there were plenty of other siblings that could have moved to the OV. John Courtright's son Milo married 7/20/1847 in Jefferson Co., OH to Ann elizabeth DAVIS, supposedly daughter of a Joseph Davis. She was born 3/21/1827 Steubenville, Jefferson Co., OH. They moved to CA c1850, they had 2 children & Milo left her. He was the black sheep of the family! anyway I'd love to know if Joseph is actually part of the Davids family from NJ. I believe that Henry Maxwell b. 1800 Brooke WV m. Nancy Brownlee moved to Jefferson County OHIO sometime after 1850 and before 1855. He had two sons: Samuel and John. Both fought in G company 30th OH INF in the civil war (Samuel's pension says his mother is Nancy; John B. Maxwell lists Jane as his wife and Arthur Brannagan as a grandson - there is a marraige of Jane Maxwell to Arthur Brannagan). There are marriage records of female Maxwells with the same first names as the daughters of Henry and Nancy and right timeframe: Nancy Maxwell m. Samuel Savage Eliza J. Maxwell m. George W. Kiddy Sarah m. Sylvanus H. Debee Sarah m. Albart R. Dunlap Rachel B. m. John W. Lucas Too many Mary Maxwell marraiges and no Martha Maxwell. Hi all, Thought I'ld pass this along for everyone: microfilm # 13022 June 28 1926, Herald Star Steubenville Newspaper found at Ohio Historic Society, Columbus, Ohio DEATH ROLL Charles Marino, a carpenter by occupation and resident of Weiston died at O.V. Hospital on Sabath at 3:10 am after a short illness aged 26 years. His remains were removed to the home of his brother Tony Marino at Mingo Junction. Another brother resides in Weirton Albert W. Ballard, a baker, died at his home at Allkanna on saturday at 9:40 pm after a short illness, age 73 years. He was a native of Mississippi. Mrs. Harry Smith of Alikanna is a niece of the deceased. (very hard to read and Alikanna is spelled both ways, it appears?) Bueche Funeral The funeral of Mrs. Anna J. Bueche was held from St., Peters church this monring at 8:30 Father Powers officiating. Yes, I did think that it might be gold, but Sutter's Mill in California was discovered in 1848. There was another gold rush to Colorado in 1858 and the Klondike in 1897 in the Yukon. So, I rather ruled that out, but I really could be wrong. California became a state in 1850. These alumni were moving at least 23 years later and they went to Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Utah, Oklahoma, and Illinois, as well, as California. Maybe it was land that attracted them? The Great Land Rush in Oklahoma occurred in 1889. Maybe they all took the advice that Horace Greely made popular after 1850 to, "Go west, young man." Well, I don't know. Maybe Americans just like going west! Msybe it was Manifest Destiny. Hi Karen, I noticed that, too. It is interesting. I, too, wonder if there was a reason. I have 5 more pages of Alumni to post--to 1920. The Westward flow slowed down about 1886, although there were a few scattered people still going west after that. By about 1905, most of the graduates stayed in the tri-county area. I've been trying to find David Carlyle who may have gone to California from Toronto, OH and who appears to have left before 1880.
