Larry, The first CHAMPER I have in my files was William Champer who was the executor & witness to the will of Daniel KELLY in Union Twp., Harrison Co., OH in 1831. It's possible that either Daniel's wife was a Champer or one of his daughters was married to one. Later in this family is another Champer connection so I feel that there was a long standing connection between these 2 families. It's possible that the John Champer below had more children & also that he was the s/o William Champer: Descendants of John Champer 1 John Champer b: Abt. 1798 OH .. +Jemima Watson b: Abt. 1800 m: Apr 6, 1819 Columbiana Co., OH 2 Esther Champer b: Feb 13, 1823 OH d: Mar 14, 1907 Jay Co., IN .... +Jonathan Kelly b: Feb 1823 Island Creek Twp., Jefferson Co., OH m: Jun 29, 1843 Carroll Co., OH d: Jun 14, 1898 Adams Co., IN Father: Jonathan KELLY Mother: Sarah KERRIGAN 2 Jacob Champer b: 1824 OH d: res 1860 Jefferson Twp., Adams Co., IN .... +Mary Jane Kelly b: 1825 Island Creek Twp., Jefferson Co., OH m: Dec 30, 1841 Carroll Co., OH Father: Jonathan KELLY Mother: Sarah KERRIGAN 2 John C. Hello, Could SKS please look up a possible marriage entry for James Carlyle to Ella Hall, Oct 26, 1896 (day approx.)? I can't find a marriage entry for them at their place of residence (which was Winchester KY), so I thought I'd try James' hometown of Toronto OH. Thanks for any help, Karen
June I have the Harrison Co map here in front of me, good thing b/c it would be hard to describe! I couldn't find section 31 in SMithfield twp Range 3, twp 8, or rather they didn't have it listed in BLM. Any ideas on that one? June, YES! That was his son Samuel & that location sure makes sense. I bet that was part of his father's original farm. Now to find the original deed! Could anyone tell me what the range #, etc is for Smithfield Twp? I'm looking through the BLM land records & I might be able to tell whose land my John Courtright was living on in Smithfield. He moved from Columbiana Co after the 1820 census & I have to wonder if he was a squatter! He never bought land in Columbiana & all the land records on BLM are for after 1820. Did they not sell land before that time? Thanks in advance! Cindy
Julia, Thank you so much for the resources, I need all the help I can get! I'm at a real concrete wall on my ancestor John Courtright. He lived in the OH Valley area from c1799 to 1830: 1799-1818 various townships in Beaver Co., PA, never taxed for land only 1 cow! I have looked through the Beaver land records & he's not mentioned. 1820 Columbiana Co., OH census , according to several co. histories he moved there in 1818. I've looked through these land records as well, nothing. 1830 Smithfield twp., Jefferson Co., OH is when he last appears on the census. I haven't found an older man living in the 1840 census of his children so "assume" he died 1831-1840. I've had several people do look ups for me in the Jeff. land/probate records, nothing. Where else should I look? He left 10 children, the youngest 2 were minors when he died, IF he died 1831-1840. I feel that his land was somewhere in the Short Creek Twp., Harrison & Smithfield Twp., Jefferson area. That's where his kids were concentrated for a time after his death. With so many Courtrights in the area for generations it baffles me that none of them left a will? I recently received death certificates for about 20 or so of them in the OH Valley area alone! I can connect all except one to my John Courtright. One more question: I know John's son James died 1834 of cholera in Beaver Co., PA as it's in an old newspaper article . I'm assuming it was a problem on the west side of the river as well. Do you know of any lists of cholera deaths? Thanks for letting me ramble! Dear Listmembers: I'm writing today regarding Adoption Searches, as to how one may apply it to Genealogy Research. Most adoptees and/or birthparents and other extended family eventually search for their missing family members. As a reunited adoptee myself, I now help others to search and reunite. I am often hired by birthmothers and siblings of adoptees to locate their missing/lost family member for them. Adoptees are very concerned with past generations of family history. Even tracing death certificates is quite helpful to an adoptee when filling out a medical history form in their doctors office (those who haven't traced their family of origin have nothing to write on their health forms). The state of Ohio has a Birth Index and Supplemental List. My information covers 1959 through 1989 and was purchased through Vital statistics in Columbus, Ohio. Those who require assistance may contact me directly. Birth Indexes list all babies born on a given DOB in any area of Ohio, used by adoptees to learn their name at birth, enabling them to locate their family of origin. Supplemental Lists are the name changes or amended names of the adopted, used by birthmothers and other family members to locate an adoptee by their current adopted name. I'd like to invite anyone with an interest in adoption to join my Ohio Triad mailing list. Reading the archived digests will provide links and addresses to information concerning Ohio and the many public records available. Information, resources, databases are available at very reasonable cost. Sincerely, E. Kimble Reunited Adoptee Ohio Adoption Searcher [email protected] [email protected]
The description of the land should be on the deed. In 1805 there is a good chance it is an original purchase...is it? The auditor of Ohio has a book about Ohio Lands...which describe the different surveys. I'll get the address for you to send for one if you'd like. Dear Linda, According to Tilton Territory by Robert H. Richardson, Carpenter's Fort was on present day Short Creek in Warren Township. page 263, note 4. There is a chapter called Carpenter's Fort in this book. If your library does not own it, try to see if they can obtain it for you through interlibrary loan. I picked up my copy at a local paper and book sale. Carol

Trying to find Ronald James Hubbard, born 12-2-30 in Harrison County, Ohio, to Helen Liggett Wilson Hubbard and Hobart (or Hubert) Hubbard. He could be a key to finding information on June Wilson (his sister) born March 16, 1916 in Jefferson County (Steubenville) and John Vernon Wilson (his brother) born January 15, 1918. Any information on any of these people would be so appreciated. Thank you. My mother is 82 and June and John are her cousins. She would like to reconnect with them as their relationship was separated as children.

does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get a metes & bounds description from a deed dated 1805.? How can I find out just where this is in modern day Jefferson County Ohio? Help? Shirley

I was pleased and excited to find the death record of gg-grandpa David Houser/Hauser in the probate records on an LDS film. The earliest date on those is about 1870. Does anyone know if there are earlier death records available? I'm looking for the death of David's wife before 1850. He was married in 1824 to Sally Bowers, but his wife on the 1850 census was Susan, too young to have been married in 1824. So I'm trying to find when Sally died, and thereby determine which woman is the mother of ggrandpa Tinlis Houser. Any suggestions appreciated!!
