In regard to the controversy over the lack of records for the Warrenton Cemetery - they were destroyed in a tragic fire that occurred at the home of the sexton in the mid to late 1940's. The cemetery had to be "closed" at that time. Only people who had marked lots were allowed to be buried there. There is no sexton, the township trustees keep the cemetery mowed and try to prevent it from becoming overgrown. Most of the older tombstones were marble and because this was a highly industrial, coal burning area, the acid rain has dissolved most of them to a point of being unreadable. this is especially irksome to me, my G-Grandfather is buried there and I would love to be able to read his b.\d. dates!! Dear Group: It is so good to be in contact with people from jefferson Co. I grew up in Toronto in the 1950's and remember going up onto the hills and looking down the Ohio valley. Inspite of the steel mills and pollution I could just imagine what it was like in the 1700's. Anyway, not trying to start a war!!, but I use Family tree maker and have recently thought about chaning to legacy. any thoughts Tim Kavulla

Dear list: my computer crashed several weeks ago due to a virus. I lost a bunch of info; I am searching for listings of the Osage and East Springfield cemeteries. Does anyone know where i might find this info. Thanks Tim Kavulla Houston, TX
Hello My name is Robert Hart Keggan, and I am new to this list. I am a descendant of a Campbell and may be a descendant of a Johnson line--both from Jefferson Co, OH. The most I know is set down below. My maternal grandmother was a Campbell from Morrow Co, OH. I have the line back to a Mr. A. Campbell of Jefferson Co, OH d ca 1819. I don't know who his wife was. But suspect she might be a Johnson. The Morrow Co History of 1880 states that a Mrs. A. Campbell moved to what is now Morrow Co, OH from Jefferson Co, OH around 1821. She was the widow of Mr. A. Campbell. She had at least three known sons: Andrew b 25 Jul 1803- d 21 Oct 1878, Johnson, and William. No reference is made to Mrs. A's maiden surname or given name. I have suspicions that Mrs. A., the widow, might have been a Johnson. She named one of her sons, Johnson--and there was a Johnson settler near the new Campbell homestead in the same section in Morrow Co, OH. If I remember right, I did find a marriage in Jefferson Co, OH of a Campbell to a Johnson (or Johnston) in the right time frame. In past research (which was lost in a 1995 house fire), I recall that I had suspicions that Mr. A. was possibly Mr. Andrew Campbell--probably because he named one of his sons Andrew. Possibly because of the marriage record--which I no longer have. Also, that he might have ran a Ferry Boat Service in or around Jefferson Co. OH. He may have died in a drowning. Note: What was Jefferson Co in 1800 may be parts of several smaller counties now. Can anyone help me on these lines. Thank you. email to [email protected]
A big thank you to everyone who offered suggestions. I found a map that answered my questions. Bob Moyer

Thomas Price b. 1830 in England married Mary A. Coleman b. 1844 in OH her parents born in PA. I found this family which I believe are mine in the 1900 census in Steubenville, Jeff. Co. They have 3 children living in their home Richard 39, Elenor 25 and Mary 20. It listed that Thomas and Mary A. had 6 children with 5 living. I believe that Katherine Price Pettibon is one of their children and in 1900 census she states birth is in OH in 1862, married to John Pettibon living in Lawrence Co., PA. John Pettibon was the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth McBride Pettibon of Washington Co., PA. John and Katherine Price Pettibon had one child born in Mingo Junction in 1890 prior to their moving to Lawrence Co., PA. In the death index for OH I found a Thomas C. Price death May 13, 1913 in Jefferson Co., I do not know if this is the same Thomas for which I am looking. I would like to hear from anyone with any knowledge of these family names. Thank YOU............Marilyn
I need some direction. I have a Thomas Price married to Mary A. Coleman in 1860 in Jefferson Co. I believe I have the correct family in the 1900 census for Jefferson Co., Steubenville Twp. 5th Ward, living on Madison Avenue. In the 1910 census for Jefferson Co. Steubenville Twp. I cannot find a 5th Ward or a Madison Ave. Could someone tell me what ward and precinct to look in for the 1910 census? Thank YOU Marilyn
Hello everyone. I'm researching my wifes' family name of HECKARD and have traced them back to Jefferson County, OH. I'm stuck on items: Newspaper articles and Wills said our relative Nicholas Heckard(ert) owned 100 acres lying in section 20, township 8, range 2nd in the Steubenville district. I don't have the resources at hand to find exactly where this is. The on-line map sites aren't much help so I thought someone on this list might have a section map that identifies the location. My research also says its in Knox township (which I guess is township 8 above). Is there a township or section map on-line that would help out-of-staters like myself find this information. Thanks for hosting the list - Bob Moyer Asheboro, NC [email protected]

I am trying to figure out who my ggg grandfathers parents were. I now know that he was born in Jefferson County, Ohio on September 26, 1831. Can anyone help me out with this? I believe that his parents were both born in PA by what is in later census records. I have not located him in the 1850 census, I believe that he was still living with his parents at that time. His name is Harvey E. McMillin (spelled various ways.) Thanks. Jennifer Smith
