    1. [OHJEFFER] Folger, Ladd, Smithfield, Jefferson County, Ohio
    2. Bonnie Hamilton
    3. Researching: Elizabeth FOLGER born circa. 1820 died December 1867, married James Denson Ladd (1820-1905). Looking for the actual birth of this Elizabeth. Elizabeth is the daughter of Mayhew FOLGER (1774-1828) and Mary JOY (1778-1858) from Nantucket, MA, by way of Philadelphia, PA. Nantucket vital records state that Elizabeth, daughter of Mayhew and Mary Joy Folger married James D Ladd of Smithfield, Ohio. Ladd records state that the marriage was in 1842. Nantucket vitals also state that Elizabeth, daughter of Mayhew and Mary Folger was born in 1803. This child would have been not only 17 years older than James Ladd, but would have been too old to be the mother of his children. It is very possible that the first daughter Elizabeth died at a young age and another daughter born closer to 1820 is the one who married James Ladd. It is also possible that the date 1803 is an error and should read 1813 or 1823, or another date which would be more consistent with a marriage date of 1842. According to Nantucket vitals, in 1810 Mayhew Folger moved his family to Philadelphia, and in 1813 they moved to Ohio. The information in the Nantucket Vital records books on this branch of the Folger family is taken from family papers, not church records, and may not be complete, or there could be errors. James Denson Ladd (1820-1905) is the son of Benjamin Whitehead Ladd (1782-1851) and Elizabeth Wood (1788-1832). I have extensive research on both these families posted on rootsweb worldconnect: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=tibart Bonnie Ladd Hamilton tibart@alum.wellesley.edu

    3. John, I will tell you first hand that although Esther Powell's tombstone inscriptions is a wonderful source, it is NOT complete and it is NOT totally accurate. Many directions and names of cemeteries and the readings from the stones are incorrect. I have found this while doing my own research and helping others with research in Jefferson Co as well. The Jefferson County Chapter of the OGS are currently working VERY hard to update the tombstone collections in Jefferson County and putting together a comprehensive publication which will include multiple (shared) names of cemeteries, doing this through deed searches to locate and prove each cemetery name change over the years, as well as clear and precise directions to each cemetery. There is a really good secondary source for researching in the area that you show interest in. A book titled, "A time and Place in Ohio" by Robert H. Richardson is available from the LDS Family history center on microfiche (which for a small fee of 15 cents on permanent loan it can be read at any FHC). From this book I read on page 21; Methodist Episcopal Church building at Hopewell was in desperate need of expansion and renewal. This small house of worship had been built in 1798 and was the first such structure in the Territory Northwest of the Ohio river... in central Warren Twp. the church had to be replaced. Enthusiastic volunteers cut the trees and after dismantling the original building, constructed a larger, stronger one.... while they were working, they were extremely careful not to disturb the final resting place of the pioneers buried in the cemetery adjacent to the church. Abel ASHBY was buried in 1816, Thomas EWING in 1817, James ANDERSON in 1818, Cornelius HOWARD in 1828, Isaac BECKETT in 1839, and William PUMPHREY in 1842, who was one of the original founders. Members of the frontier families who came to settle a wilderness are interred in this historic graveyard. (photo of the First Church built in 1798 is on the next page, 22) In the index of the book are the following ASHBY listings: Abel Sr, pg 21, 227, HC (Hopewell Cemetery) Abel Jr., pg 227, CW, HC (Civil War, Hopewell Cemetery) Charles, pg., 131, 183 Harriett pg. 227, HC Jennie pg. 236, HC Mary pg. 227, HC Nancy pg. 227, HC Reuben H., pg. 236, WaC (Warrenton Cemetery) Thomas E. pg. 179, 181 Comments concerning the condition of the Hopewell Cemetery: (published and written in 1982); This historic churchyard is located adjacent to the Hopewell Methodist Church on County Road No. 16. It began with the church in 1798 and today "many" of the old stones are eroded and illegible. (I might add, many stones are missing as well!) I hope this assists you with your research efforts. 3. from THE PIONEER COLLECTION, by Sinclair; McCaughey, Wm.bur. Old Seceder Cemetery * (this is in Mt. Pleasant, and well maintained). Inscription reads, "In memory of William McCaughey who departed this life on Oct. 1st, 1827, aged 82 yrs 4 Mo 2 days." Wife born Mar. 1, 1746 died Jan 1, 1839. their children, Joseph, m. Elizabeth Humphrey, dau of George Humphrey; James, m Elizabeth McCune, dau of Col Thomas McCune; Janet m. Joseph McCaughey, son of Robert; Jean, m Wm. McCaughey, son of Robert; Margaret m. Isaac Taggart; Elizabeth m. Robert Pollock and (2nd) James Hogue. I looked for them in Chester County, but although I found a McCaughey family, they all descended from the original emigrant, Nathaniel McCaughey, who came from Londonderry, Ireland, in 1797, and settled in Sadsbury. The only Chester will that contains the surname McCaughey is McCAUGHEY, WILLIAM. Goshen, July 8, 1801. James McHearge, admr. If interested, you can get a copy at; Archives and Records 610 Westtown Rd. West Chester, PA 19380-0990 James and Elizabeth McCaughey are also buried in the Seceders cemetery in Mt. Pleasant (this is a wonderful old cemetery, well cared for, although the church is long gone.) The Seceders were a sect of Presbyterianism, and as such you might want to search for other of these churches, to find the family before Ohio....there were quite a few in PA. (my own family are buried there, and the family originated in York Co....I found them there, tracing other Seceder congregations). Elsewhere, it is suggested that William was a Rev. War soldier, so you might want to see if the NARA has papers for him. I found a Humphrey, George, who you might want to keep in mind as a potential father for Elizabeth. Geo. was a Pvt in the 1st Erg. Light Dragoons, Continental Troops, 1782-3, and he 9s buried in the Old Seceder's Cemetery, too, which makes me think of him as a possible. HE enlisted from VA in early years of the war, serving along Va and Pa frontier; born in North Ireland, son of David Humphrey, Sr m.Jane Wilson 11-2-1775; 2nd to Elizabeth Jolly, 1-15-1788. Tombstone inscription "In memory of Geo. Humphrey who departed this life Mar. 26, 1834, aged 84 yrs 3 Mo 2 days" - was a member of 1st Const. Convention of Ohio, Rep. 1809 and 1812. 3. From The History of Belmont and Jefferson Counties, Cahpter XXIV, Townships and Villiages of Jefferson County, page 546-547 MRS. SARAH MCGLENN - The grandfather of this lady, William McCaughey, emigrated from Ireland and settled in Lancaster county, Pa. He married Miss Margaret Jackson, a cousin of "Old Hickory" seventh president of the United States. They reared a family of six children, two sons and four daugbers, The youngest daughter named Elizabeth, and mother of our sketch, was born March 8, 1788, and married Robert Pollock or Polk, about 1811. This Mr. Pollock was a cousin of President Polk, and served in the war of 1812. He died in 1832. She married for a second husband, James Hogue, in 1825, by which marriage they reared a family of three children, one son and two daughters-Elizabeth, Sarah and James Newton. The second daughter, Sarah, the subject of our sketch, married Thomas McGlenn, June 13, 1861. They reared a family of two children, one son and one daughter- James Averill and Alma Reed. Mr. McGlenn died May 3, 1870. Mrs. Hogue, mother of Mrs. McGlenn, now 1879, in her 92d year, is still living and resides with her daughter Mrs. King, in Mount Pleasant. When Mrs. Hogue first saw Mount Pleasant in 1806, there were but three houses in the place, Benjamin Scott's tavern, opposite where the Burriss House now stands; a dwellinghouse east of where Thotnas Horton's store is, and Jesse Thomas' house in west part of the village. William McCaughey, grandfather of Mrs. McGlenn, was in the battle of Bunker Hill, and most of the engagements of the Revolution. He served through the entire war. In the fall 1806, he crossed the Ohio river at Wellsburg, on his way to his new home. He followed down the river to the mouth of Short creek, thence followed up that stream to the mouth of Little Short creek, where he ascended the hills, and settled on Irish ridge, on the farm now owned by his granddaughter, Mrs. McGlenn. His was the second team that had ever passed over that route-Mr. Tygart's was the first. When Mr. McCaughey first -came to the farm there was a tavern on the premises, a double log house, with a space between the buildings. This was the first tavern in the country. The new comers were met by the hospitable landlord,-with his bottle of whisky to treat them in true backwoods style. This tavern was rented until spring, so Mr. McCaughcy had to move into a cabin that stood on another part of the farm. In 1807 Mr. McCaughey went east and brought home with him an apple, the seeds of which were planted by his little daughter, Margaret, from these seeds grew a tree that is still vigorous and bears good crops of fruit. 2. John Ashby
    3. It is late and I am too tired to look up anything at the moment, but I am primarily looking for information on the Ashby family, mostly from the Rush Run area (latter moved to Youngstown, where I was born and raised). Any information would be appreciated. I have traced it back to Samuel Ashby, born about 1820. I know that my great grandfather, one of Samuel's sons, was James Ashby and was born in Rush Run. I have hit a temporary dead end with Samuel as I can not yet find where he was born. I know that James is buried in the Warrenton Cemetary along with his wife Mary Jane Buicy (sp?) 1825. > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
