    1. ([OHJEFFER])ENGLAND and SMITH surnames
    2. Ken White
    3. Greetings all. Thanks for reading this. I am searching for information about *Martha Jane England* (England is her family surname, not the country of origin.) and her husband *Samuel Smith*. Here is what I believe I know about her. She came from a Quaker family with origins in Cecil County Maryland, aka Chester County Penn. Not sure when the boundaries changed. She was the youngest child, born about 1821 – 1825, either in White Clay Creek, Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware, or Jefferson County Ohio. Her parents were Joseph England (1763 – 1828) and Eliza Boulden (1780 – 1868) both of New Castle County, Delaware. Martha was married to Samuel Smith (abt 1809 in Maryland?– after 1880) in Jefferson County, Ohio. Marriage recorded in *Marriage Records of Jefferson County Ohio , *book 5, page 7, line 109. She is listed as Massie England. Married by Charles S. Barnes on 29 Apr 1839. Samuel and Martha show up in the 1840 census in Cross Creek, Jefferson, Ohio. I cannot find them in the 1850 census, in 1860 they are in Ashland county and in 1870 they are in Wayne County. I am looking for birth records, info about Samuel Smith family, and any other help I can get. This has been a brick wall for me for a long time. Thanks again for reading, Ken

    3. Ruby, You didn't say where you grandfather served with the CCC, was it in Jefferson Co.? I know that the CCC built the Toronto Ohio Edison Plant and the stadium at the high school. My uncle helped built the plant and then got a job there when it open. There were dorms on or near the plant site and a dining hall between Rt. 7 and the RR tracks. Our Grange still has two of the 9 ft. wooden tables that were in the dining hall. They were picnic style with folding benches. The Grange had about six of the tables, but they were just too heavy to move, so some were sold to purchase new folding tables. I believe my Mother said that several high school stadiums and a few other public buildings in Jefferson Co., were built by the CCC. She grew up in the north end of Toronto, and remembers when plant and stadium were built. I don't know about any records, but if you know where he worked, the government (city, village, twp. etc.) of that area may have records as to what was built by the CCC and possibly who worked on the crews. Also, the newspapers in the area might have ran stories on the building projects. >Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 07:35:12 EDT >From: Rubytx2098@aol.com >To: OHJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com >Message-ID: <13.695d9c1.2678c7f0@aol.com> >Subject: [ohjeffer] CCC Camps? >Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" >Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > >Does anyone have any information on the CCC Camps? My grandfather served in >the (CCC) Civilian Conservation Corp Camp during the depression. 3. Jefferson County Historical Association does not have this publication for sale. We did have an old copy that was sold early this year for $100. If you do find a copy, it will probably cost at least that much. As an alternative, you could write to the Jefferson County Historical Association and ask if they would copy specific pages for you. His name is John Guess or Gess, and is in the 1820 census in Springfield, Jefferson, in 1830 in Clinton, Jefferson, and then after that in Lee, Carroll. He was born around 1796 but no one knows where — censuses say different things, but presumably Virginia or Pennsylvania or perhaps Maryland are the most likely. He died in 1871. His wife was Hannah Albaugh, from Frederick, Maryland, of German descent, and I have some information on her parents. She was born around 1800 and died in 1858, and had some family in the same area, although I haven’t worked on them in quite a while. John and Hannah had 9 sons and 3 daughters, and 2 of the sons died in Mississippi during the Civil War — I have quite a lot of information on John’s descendants, but what I don’t have is any idea about his parents or where he was born. > > From DNA testing, it appears that John Guess is closely related in some way to a Jonathan Gess or Guess who was in Centre, Columbiana in 1820 (he was a bit older, but probably not old enough to be a father, and brothers with those names seems odd). Jonathan’s family settled in Hocking. > > Another possible brick wall (maybe more for Carroll Co) is Anna Maria Woods, the first wife of John’s son Elisha. She was born around 1823 and the two married in 1842 in Carroll, and then she died young in 1849 in Van Buren Co, Iowa after having 3 daughters — would love to know more about her family. > > Longshot is Elisha’s second wife Eleanor Park or Parks, born 1819 in Ohio — possible her family was from the same place. 3. My brick wall is John Closson, born 1783, perhaps in PA. Married Jane Adams, born 1786. They had eight children and lived in Springfield Twp. in 1821 or 1822 when John died. Shortly thereafter, Jane picked up the eight children and moved to Ashland County, Ohio, where I assume she had family. The name was usually Clawson after that and I have a lot of information on the family. John, however, remains a mystery. Karen Collins Columbus, OH Sent from my iPad

    3. JAMES WATT, born 11 August 1823, supposedly in Steubenville, Jefferson Co, Ohio. No further info on his birth, nothing on his parents nor any siblings (if there were any) and of course nothing on any other of his ancestors. We do have him in Rensselaer, Jasper Co, Indiana, where he died 25 September 1863, a casualty of the Civil War…sent home to die due to health issues. We have info on his wife (and her ancestors), their children, and my line is proven from him down to me. This line is the most difficult brick wall in my genealogy. I live on the West coast, so a trip to Jefferson County to do research in person is next to impossible, due to many considerations. Virginia Gandrup

    3. Oh, the Guess Family Old John Guess didn’t move, his land was located in Springfield Twp until Clinton Twp was formed from Springfield Twp. Then Carroll Co was formed in 1832 and that part of Clinton Twp became Jefferson Twp then later Lee Twp. Carroll County. In the Guess collection at the genealogy library in Carroll County one researcher list old John’s birth place as Greene Co. Pa. Don’t believe he is on this mailing list. If you are on Facebook you might want to post your query there in History and Genealogy of Carroll County, Ohio. As for the John and Jonathan Guess, it was a common thing back then to have a son With both of those names. You might want to check George Wood/Woods family in Springfield Twp For your Anna Marie Wood. George Wood lived between Bergholz and Amsterdam. Surnames (more below): GUESS/GESS — mainly John Guess b. 1796, d. 1871 (see below) Related: ALBAUGH WOODS PARK or PARKS My Jefferson Co brick wall is also a Carroll Co brick wall, although that’s more because the county was created. She also could have been a widow, given her age when they married (1850). > On Jun 1, 2018, at 9:02 PM, Richard Berkheiser <ricksbookshelf@gmail.com> wrote: > > Hi everyone! > > Just letting you know that the lists are back up and running again so to > "celebrate" our return I'm initiating a first ever Surname Shout Out. > > A Surname Shout Out works like a Roll Call where we all post an ancestor > we're totally stumped on. HEATON, a blacksmith, b. 7 Feb. 1810 Philadelphia (according to his death record), d 10 Feb. 1890 Jefferson Co., OH; buried Short Creek Quaker Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Twp., Jefferson Co., OH; father born PA, and mother born NJ according to the 1880 Census records. Abner married 29 Oct. 1832 Lower Makefield, Bucks Co., PA Elizabeth HEATON (daughter of William and Ann [MATHER] HEATON) b. 20 Oct. 1809 Westhoughton, Lanc.. Co., England. Abner and Elizabeth's children were Mary Ann b. PA 1835, Elizabeth b. PA 1837, Lucy b. PA 1838, Samuel H. b. OH 1842, Amanda M. b. OH 1844, J. Cornelius "Neil" b. OH 1848, and Jennie M. b. OH 1853. Abner had a sister, Sarah living near who married Amos HEATON, brother of Elizabeth. Since 1994, I've found several (undocumented families) of Abner, none which match his records found in Jefferson Co. OH. My grandmother did say a David Heaton was a direct ancestor of this family - and therefore the given name for my father. The naming pattern of Samuel H. for their firstborn son suggest Abner's father's name. And there is a well-known Rev. Samuel H. Heaton.
