The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County does offer Heritage Quest and AncestryPlus at the main library AND all branches. In exchange for allowing these services to copy hundreds of non-copywrited genealogy materials the library has in its collection, the library receives access to the census collections of each service. A card holder enters the card number and PIN and receives 45 minutes of use time on the computer clock. If no one is waiting for a computer, library staff can use a master number to start an additional 45-minute session. A person without a local card can also be logged on by staff. Numerous research databases are available in addition to these two. The Library has purchased subscriptions to these databases, so they can be provided free of charge. Library cardholders can also access the majority of the databases from home. The licensing restrictions of some vendors prevent offering ³remote access² to the resource. In isolated situations, the costs associated with remote access are prohibitive. BGMI and ProQuest Historical Newspapers are two that I have used at home where no time limits apply and there is no printing charge. A word of warning: I have partial transcriptions of 1900 & 1910 census records from microfilms. These were done many years ago in a distant library in limited work time. I tried Sat. to find these records using the services at the library in order to fill in the blanks on the census forms. I was completely unsuccessful on both services even using others than the HOH. The librarian's comment was full of meaning. "Heritage Quest is supposed to be redoing the indices for more accuracy." My time was up (2 sessions) before I found them by searching page by page which is also possible. Hope this provides some clarification and shows the situation is different in different locations. Peg, Thank you for the info. I note one item of info that may be helpful to me. You said "A person without a local card can also be logged on my staff. -- Is this possible via email to the library staff and my home computer in Pennsylvania? According to their website, Heritage Quest can only be accessed on the computers at the library. See below: Online Genealogical Subscription Services These subscription databases are only accessible at the State Library of Ohio on the library's computers.
