Thanks for the info on the cemetery Mt Ridge sounds familiar. Betty
I know that Gabriel Deal is buried there and shares a headstone with the Jarvis relatives. I'm looking for his wife Almeda who's according to her death certificate is also buried there and there may be others. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 22, 2004 6:56 PM Subject: Re: [OHJACKSO-L] Salem Cemetery-Directions > Sharon, > > Wellston Library can give you excellent driving directions. However, if construction isn't still messed up. It's LEFT off of HIWAY 93 SOUTH of Wellston. Turn LEFT (east) at the ROADS intersection (use to be called Berlin Crossroads before WWII). As you continue down this road...sorry I don't remember the name of it, you'll see a sign on your RIGHT (gravel road). You'll go up this road ABOUT 1/2 mile. There's a little white church there, still in operation...independent denomination...no church records. The outhouse has been torn down but there was still a picnic table there. If you don't bring your own stuff, Wellston has a KFC (also McDonalds) right on hiway 93 as you go south out of Wellston. Take plenty of bottled water. It is a nicely maintained cemetery with LOTS of Kisor's in it. > > Who are you looking for? > > I have BISHOP, GLEASON and a few others there. > > Helen > > > > From: "Sharon Disbennett" <[email protected]> > > Date: 2004/02/22 Sun PM 05:08:10 EST > > To: [email protected] > > Subject: [OHJACKSO-L] Salem Cemetery > > > > Can anyone tell me good driving directions for Salem Cemetery if I am coming from the direction of McArthur through Wellston? > > When I go to Wellston later in the spring, I want to look up some of the records for the burials in Salem Cemetery as some of the death certificates I recently received told of burials there. > > Thanks! > > > > "Death is but crossing the world, as friends do the seas. > > They live in one another still." You can download a form and send them $5.00 as long as you prove you are related and they will send you limited information. Not sure what they will send but that's what I was told. I have tried everything that I can think of, but not that, wonder where I could get a form for that sort of thing. I would be greatful for anything you could get me on anyone there. Really all that I need is name,b&d dates, dates that they were there if possible, patient # and anything like that, and additional information is welcomed & appreciated. It is for a genealogy project I am working on,same way with the Children's Home patients. Susan, His death certificate # is 15448 d. 3/25/1917 Athens Co. You can either get someone to go to OHS (Ohio Historical Society) or ORDER the Death Certificate for about $6.00 from OHS. It takes about 6 weeks to get. Go to www.ohiohistory.org Go to Archives & go to Resources and go to Death Certificates. THis is a VERY GOOD site. It lists STATE WIDE DC #'s ON LINE from 1917-1934. But they have 1909-1944 certificates. They haven't put them on line due to shortage of help and budget constraints. helen > > From: [email protected] > Date: 2004/02/23 Mon AM 12:16:46 EST > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [OHJACKSO-L] athens asylum > > My GGgrandfather, died there. Medical records are protected due to privacy issue and particularly the lastest medical act past recently. That's partly also why some are coming up with "copies" of Death Certificates that are TYPED and not the full blown handwritten copy. See www.ohiohistory.org The OHS also has a form you can fill out if you are next of kin or the last remaining direct descendent. Due to privacy act, if you get the information, you should be sure that if there are any living descendents they don't come after you if you publish the information. (I'm not sure if you have to go there to actually see them. I don't think they make copies. sometimes, if I remember right, you tell them WHAT you are looking for and if the records have it, they can tell you without giving you a copy. Mental health issues in our society still carries a stigma. It shouldn't be that way but it is. Also....The "definition of "asylum" and "mental health" changes over the years. Sometimes it was SENILITY---caused by hardening of the arteries. Sometimes it was EPILEPSY and they didn't know about it them. Sometimes it could have been a "poor house" for the last remaining relative that no one could take care of any longer. Remember these folks had to work 12-13 hours a day to get the "chores" done. So....you have to ask yourself WHY do you want to know. I have tracked a couple of distant "cousins" by getting their DC. They ususally don't show the "real" place of burial OR they are reburied elsewhere except those that are on the "asylum" grounds. I am hoping that the third time is a charm on this one, as I have tried twice before to post this on the Jackson list and it has bounced back. If it did actually make it through one of those times, I apologize for the double post. Tacy This letter was submitted by Bob Mankin to the Ross Co Genealogical Soc newsletter back in 1992-1993. There it was shortened to just include the names and places mentioned, but thought I would send the entire letter on to these lists since many of the names are from the area. Bob included info that the John Ratcliff Sr to whom the letter was written was b 1781 and d 1846. His wife was Rachel Ray. The writer, John Jr, was married first to Elizabeth Ratcliff (maiden name) who died in MO. My line is thru one of the other Stretch siblings, Elizabeth who married William J Seymour in 1831 Ross co, and not to the Radcliffs at all. Spelling, abbreviations and punctuation are as appear in the letter. Address on letter says: To the State of the Ohio, Ross County pike run post office to John Ratcliff senior Bolivar Mo Feb 7 1842 State of Missouri polk County bolover post office February the 7 day 1842. My GGgrandfather, died there. His name was Charles Jefferson Nelson, born 22Mar1847, died 25Mar1917. I would like to know what his affliction was but have not been able to get any information. I was told the records were destroyed some years before I requested them. The request would have been in the mid 1980s. Susan Nelson
