    1. [OHJACKSO-L] Enough with the online databases discussion
    2. Charles R. Weese
    3. From the listowner: I think this topic has been discussed in sufficient detail by now. I have nothing against anyone sending a message to inform our subscribers about an good source of Ohio or Jackson County information. However, this list is for the discussion of Jackson County Ohio genealogy or history. An extended discussion of the pros or cons of any particular site is not appropriate. Usage of any internet source of information is definitely on a "buyer beware" basis. Let each interested person check out interesting sources and make up his own mind as to how useful it is. ======================================== Charles R. 3. I agree with you about the person who has been name calling. I wrote to them and they said they were "just being a good neighbor, and don't want nobody to pay for a free service!" Pretty poor way of expressing it if so. -- Janet Smart [email protected] Chillicothe, Ohio USA

    1. [OHJACKSO-L] Library Card
    2. Sharon Robinson
    3. I emailed the columbus library and received this information back. You can apply for a library card on line at <www.columbuslibrary.org>, and you can also ask a question as i did. You also can get a library card in 10 days they said as long as you are an Ohio resident. You will complete and submit a form on line. If you wish a card sooner and you live near a Discovery Place Library location, you can pick one up. Applications in person will need to present identification with name and address, such as drivers license, printed personal check or employee identification card. Additional information contact the Library's Circulation Dept. at 614-645-2730. I did not ask about Heritage Quest because i live in Florida but i do so at my local library. Hope this email helps those who are interested. Sharon Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance Tax Center - File online. File on time.

    3. According to their website, Heritage Quest can only be accessed on the computers at the library. See below: Online Genealogical Subscription Services These subscription databases are only accessible at the State Library of Ohio on the library's computers. 1. Re: [OHJACKSO-L] Libraries and Heritage Quest
    2. The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County does offer Heritage Quest and AncestryPlus at the main library AND all branches. In exchange for allowing these services to copy hundreds of non-copywrited genealogy materials the library has in its collection, the library receives access to the census collections of each service. A card holder enters the card number and PIN and receives 45 minutes of use time on the computer clock. If no one is waiting for a computer, library staff can use a master number to start an additional 45-minute session. A person without a local card can also be logged on by staff. Numerous research databases are available in addition to these two. The Library has purchased subscriptions to these databases, so they can be provided free of charge. Library cardholders can also access the majority of the databases from home. The licensing restrictions of some vendors prevent offering ³remote access² to the resource. In isolated situations, the costs associated with remote access are prohibitive. BGMI and ProQuest Historical Newspapers are two that I have used at home where no time limits apply and there is no printing charge. A word of warning: I have partial transcriptions of 1900 & 1910 census records from microfilms. These were done many years ago in a distant library in limited work time. I tried Sat. to find these records using the services at the library in order to fill in the blanks on the census forms. I was completely unsuccessful on both services even using others than the HOH. The librarian's comment was full of meaning. "Heritage Quest is supposed to be redoing the indices for more accuracy." My time was up (2 sessions) before I found them by searching page by page which is also possible. Hope this provides some clarification and shows the situation is different in different locations. 3. Public libraries and private libraries can subscribe to Heritage Quest now....they no longer sell their subscriptions to individuals. To use Heritage Quest online the people must have a Multnomah Co. library card which is free to residents of Multnomah Co. Here in Portland, Oregon the Multnomah Co. library will sell a library card to Oregonians who live outside of Multnomah Co. but it costs $75. My cousin who lives in Salem, OR can't afford the $75 so instead she subscribed to the Godfrey Library for $35. A very good deal, indeed! ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 21, 2004 9:35 PM Subject: [OHJACKSO-L] heritagequest/godfrey... > They are doing an illegal thing! 3. To the person disputing and saying this is a fraud. Do not know what he/she is talking about. I paid no fee for my library card from Columbus Metro and use it freely from my home computer. I do not live in Franklin County. I would think that the Cincinnati Public Library would offer this service, would a try. I am sure that many libraries in other states also provide this service. One must check out the various library sites and see if they do provide this service and follow the instructions. Just checked the Godfrey Memorial Site and saw that they are not state/federally funded but founded by an endowment. Therefore I would think no fraud. Happy hunting. Lynn

    3. I have been reading the posts about the Godfrey Library and I am going to mail my application today so I can begin researching their online resources. I did not care for all of the name-calling by the party who objects to individuals paying a fee to research the resources. Surely it is up to the individual to do so if desired without being called names.

    2. They are doing an illegal thing! They get funding from people's tax $$$$$$$, and they should not be charging for heritagequest, any of you that did pay, you need to ask your State Att., Gen., to file a lawsuit, it is a PUBLIC library, therefore, it is supposed to be a free service! My hometown Library has this, and it is free, because it is, like all libraries in my state, A PUBLIC LIBRARY! Just a friend, in a bordering state, a neighbor, that cares for you,(like the good book says)

    3. Here is the URL for the Godfrey Library http://godfrey.org/ Midway of the page it tell you to print out the membership form. They do not accept Charge Cards so I sent them a check along with the form. Mailed it and less than a week later they e-mailed me the code I need to use. Soon after received my Library Card in the mail. They subscribe to Heritage Quest and it is the reason I became a member but they have other research data.
