He was known in our family as "Harry Carl Hamilton," born Oct 15, 1891 in Ohio, possibly in Harrison County or Canton. According to oral history, Harry was not born a Hamilton, but assumed it as his last name, after leaving his wife and two children (possibly a boy, named "Buddy", and a girl) in Ohio. As the story goes, he got into a bar fight, which resulted in the man being killed. Not wanting to go to prison, he fled the state. This all took place before 1933, when he married Goldia Worthington in Arkansas in that year. According to Goldia, he was the son of a William and Nellie. Their surname, however, is not clear. According to Goldia, it was either "Hellmann" or "Heldman." He may, moreover, have gone by just Carl. I have tried search for him on census records and have had no luck. I did find ONE match on the WWI Draft Registration Card Index: a man named "Carl Heldman" born 15 Oct 1891 in Ohio. This man, however, was in the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City when he filled out this draft card. According to oral history, Harry Carl served in WWI, possibly as a cook. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, William Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
