They actually spelled it Marqait. The area was called Brooklyn Township. At that time Philip and Joseph lived with them. They were on pages 442-443. In the city directory in 1861 the name was spelled Marquot. It would be interesting to find the immigration papers to see how it was spelled. I read somewhere that Marquard meant boundary guard. In Tubingen Germany which is close to Baden Baden there was a restaurant that mentioned the Marquards It was on Herienberger St. 34 which was called Sills Scwabisch and specialized in vegt dishes.
