Sells, seventy-two years old, of Anderson, died Tuesday night at St. John's hospital, shortly after undergoing a surgical operation. Mr. Sells was one of the best known of the elderly men in Anderson. He was the head of a family of undertakers and singers, and the father and grandfather of all the Sells families, with one exception. The surviving children are S. C., Earl and Charles Sells, Anderson; Jesse Sells, Clinton; Theodore Sells, Hagerstown, and Mrs. Maggie Swain, Louisville, Ky. He leaves a widow, by a second marriage in January. The late Mr. Sells was a Bible student and an exhorter, and frequently, when his sons were called upon to officiate as undertakers, he would be asked to conduct a funeral service. If the death was in a family without means or acquaintances to have the details of a funeral such as desired, the Sells brothers, as undertakers, would also suit;, while the father would conduct the religious services, and other members of the Sells family, in the livery business, would attend to the detail of carriages. Such instances were frequent in the days when Anderson was booming and was rapidly filling with strangers. All of the Sells "boys," as they are familiarly, called, are singers, and are at home either in political gatherings or church choirs. Their father always gloried in the musical ability of his sons and daughter, Mrs. Swain, she being a skilled cornet player as well as a singer.
