Author: suegenet Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.unknown/12762.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, thanks for responding to my post. I remember the school and it having only two rooms. I think the room I was in only went to the fifth or sixth grade. I don't believe the other room was high school but was probably 6,7,8 and 9th. grades. My sister was in my class and she was 3 years older than me. A neighbor of ours named Betty Harvey lived on a farm close to ours and she was in the other room and she was 2 or 3 yrs. older than my sister. There were ink wells on all the desks but my age group were not allowed to use the ink, although my sister had a fountain pen and could use the ink. I also remember the Out House and there was only one out house. I hated that out house. My sister is sure she still has some report cards from there and will go through her things to find them. I do have pictures of me and my sister getting on the school bus when we were going to school there. Our collie dog Laddy would follow the bus there every day and lay outside the school door and then! follow the bus back home. I seemed like a long way. I remember some classmates getting swats with a ruler and standing in the corner. My sister might be able to draw a picture of the school. My children always laughed because I went to a two room school. We moved to Cincinnati when I was in the fifth grade and those big schools scared me to death. My parents were June & Richard Kuethe. Anyone from Cincinnati with my last name is related to me somehow. I will be going back to Batavia/Nicholsville at least once more, and perhaps twice before I'm finished with my own research. My historic writings are very visually enhanced. Given the significance of education to my subject (Raymond Hugh Burke) the schoolhouse that got his career started is important to me, so I will dig and scratch to find an image of it. If your cousin attended the school I think she did (Jackson School) it was one of the oldest sites for a school in Clermont County until it was closed (in the 1950s, as I understand it). Your cousin helped inform me that it was two rooms. I'd like to think it was two rooms long before she attended. I'd like to offer to find other resources as I do my own research, if it would help. I have been impressed with the work of the Clermont County Historical Society and Geneology Societies. Let me know if I can help further. And I'm curious as to the "Kuethes" you knew as a youth. If this is it, the building is now gone. I too am looking for an old photo of the building. If I find it, I will share. At the same time, I am interested in any verbal descriptions of the school even if Ray Burke (McNair family) attended there from 1886-1900.
