I'm posting to announce that I've just done a major update of the page, fixing broken links and adding new links. I hope you'll find the page more useful than ever. 3. Cemeteries are notorious for not making gobs of money. Most have problems breaking even, and that is quite a feat as they often have lots of voluntary help too. Given the opportunity to get out from under them, owners have been notorious for selling them on the QT to developers, etc. who quickly and quietly either plow or build over them. It is only when descendants of the deceased raise a stink that anything gets done. Cliff. Johnston "May the best you've ever seen, Be the worst you'll ever see;" from A Scots Toast by Allan Ramsay ----- Original Message ----- From: "David E. Sadly, not everyone is interested in preserving an old cemetery if it means losing money (or at least not making any) from the use of the land, and in most cases a lot depends on who owns the land and approves of plowing it under. :-( I belong to an organization where I live called the County Cemetery Committee, an ex-officio organization sanctioned by the County government itself. After 15 years of trying, we have FINALLY gotten the County to protect the +/-430 currently known cemeteries in the county and protect them from future development here in the 4th fastest growing county in the nation. We are all unpaid volunteers, and our Chairman is an archeologist by education/training (which helps), and if we find, survey, and document any place where someone is buried, then the county will protect the cemetery and a space all the way around it for 35 feet from development. Developers and builders hate it for fairly obvious reasons, but with so many of the approximately 430 cemeteries either gone now or covered over, we are not too concerned at what the developers think. :-( That is our local practice here in my county, but you will find a wide variance elsewhere from no restrictions at all to plowing them under, to absolute protection.
