You have confirmed everything I know and provided some new information as well. Charles (Charlie) was my grandfather and yes, I am sure about his birthday. Sam was born in 1892 in NYC. Charlie passed away in 1945 after a short but serious bout with cancer. He married my grandmother, Dora Dudowsky, in NYC in 1915. They had two sons, Jesse and Martin. Jesse died in 1977 from lung cancer. Jesse had 2 sons, one lives in NYC and the other in Southern CA. Martin married a girl from Texas, my mother, and there are 2 of us, me and my older sister and we all live in Texas. As you know, Leo apparently had at least one previous wife, Sam's mother. Her name was Kathi Roth and she was from Hungary. They married in 1891 in NYC where Leo was going by Ludwig Weiss. I believe she must have died for his next known, but unconfirmed, whereabouts is Cleveland. I can't find any evidence that he married Charlie's mother. Her name was Marie Froehlich from Austria. I can't find any records that any of them were in Ohio other than my grandfather telling my father he was born in Cleveland in 1894. Based on orphanage records, Leo was using the name Louis Weiss at that time. Marie and Louis separated and she and Charlie (and possibly Sam) moved to NYC in 1899. Charlie was placed in an orphanage for 3-4 years as Marie could only find work as a domestic. I am surprised that he married Rose in NYC as I hadn't traced him back to NYC. I assumed he remarried and left for CA soon after Charlie was born. But locating Leo in NYC in 1902 explains his reunion with Charlie. Charlie checked out of the orphanage and went with his mother to Austria and back in 1905. Charlie must have left with Leo for CA soon after he arrived back in the US. I didn't know he was in the earthquake! Charlie moved back to NY sometime before 1915 as he married Dora then. He also reclaimed the name Weiss. As a child, Martin remembers Charlie traveling back to CA every year to see his family and to go to the Rose Bowl. Your father & uncles also sent them fruit from Fresno around Christmastime every year. He also remembers a deputy sheriff that took an interest in Charlie. My father remembers the name Ray - don't know if it was a first name or last name. I thought Charlie was in some kind of trouble but the reform school situation fits with this acquaintance. You have given me some great information about their time in California and I appreciate that. I have been trying to trace their family back to Austria Hungary but can't find Leo's immigration anywhere. If there are any questions you might have, please let me know. I have documents that I can share as well. Leo seemed to have been a troubled person I found several incidents in the newspapers recording problems with customers and lawsuits. There was also a disappearance and plea for information on his whereabouts. Did he spend some time in Napa Sanatorium in the late 20's/early 30's? Thank you for responding to that old post. I started my research several years ago but hit a brick wall mid 2009. All I could do was wait and hope. Regards, Susan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. His eldest son, Sam, was born before the turn of the century; I don't have his, Sam's, mother's name to hand; in Dec 1902 he married my grandmother, Rose Koleszar in NYC. Are you sure about Charles's birthdate? I have heard my father and uncles mention Charlie, who like Sam, would have been their step-brother. Leo had 4 boys by Rose: Cyril, Robert, Oliver, and Ralph. In 1906 Leo, Rose, Sam, Charlie, Cyril, and Robert were living in San Francisco at the time of the earthquake and fire (Oliver and Ralph, my father, not yet born), after which they moved to the California foothills, where Leo found a job in the tailor's shop at the reform school in Ione. At some time after that they moved to southern California, living in both LA and San Diego. By 1911 they were back in San Francisco, where my father was born. I believe Leo died in 1938. I would love to get in touch with Charlie's survivors, for any family information they might provide. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
