Author: dawbarton Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.unknown/13316/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The "Firelands History Website" at http://firelands.wordpress.com has reached an important milestone, recording over 10,000 visits. Thanks to all who have stopped by to read "Sufferers' Land: A History", by Dave Barton, "Little Doctor on the Black Horse", by Harriott Benedict Wickham Barton, genealogies, and stories of early settlers of the Firelands. Your interest and support is greatly appreciated. Over the next few months, the existing genealogies will be expanded, more families will be added, and additional stories posted on the website. Please visit often to learn more about the history of the Sufferers' Land. NOTE: The Sufferers' Land, or Firelands, as it is better known, is a part of the Western Reserve in northern Ohio that was given to "Sufferers" in Connecticut, burned out of their homes by the British during the American Revolution. Author: luvzsun Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.unknown/13307.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Charles W. George registered for the WWII draft on 26 Apr 1942 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co. OH. He said he was 50 years old, born 15 Sep 1891 in Elgin, OH, his nearest relative was "wife", not named and he was unemployed. This is Charles' death record from the OHDI: Name: Charles W George Birth Date: 1892 Gender: Male Race: White Residence County: Hamilton Residence State: Ohio Residence Country: United States Death Date: 16 Jun 1966 Hospital of Death: Veterans Adm. Med. Ctr City of Death: Cincinnati County of Death: Hamilton Certificate: 44656 Age at Death: 74 Certifier: Physician Autopsy: No autopsy Marital Status: Married In the 1900 Cincinnati census, Margaret Iffland's age and birth month/year was 8/12 born Sep 1900. Impossible! That census page shows the date as June 7, 1900 and if she was 8 months old Margaret would have been born in Sept. 1899. This is probably Margaret's death record from the OHDI: Name: Margare A George Birth Date: 1900 Birth State: Ohio Birth Country: United States Gender: Female Race: White Residence County: Hamilton Residence State: Ohio Residence Country: United States Death Date: 26 Jul 1984 Hospital of Death: Long-Term Care Facilities City of Death: Hamilton County County of Death: Hamilton Certificate: 052280 Age at Death: 84 Certifier: Physician Social Security Number: 268-07-xxxx Marital Status: Widowed The above birth dates are approximate, determined only by subtracting the age at death from the year of death. The SSDI confirms Charles and Margaret's birthdates. Check http://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/contact.aspx to request copies of their obits, which should mention any surviving children. Charles life could easily be written into a fascinating book and strong considerations could be made for a movie. This story of Charles James Kammer is still in the works, with many mysteries and unanswered questions. We have used stories from relatives and immediate family; letters from Charles and internet searches, to uncover what we know to date. The mysteries 1.    Where and when did Charles James Kammer die? The best answer we have thus far is New Orleans around 1942, but he could have died somewhere in Central America. 2.    Who really were Charles James Kammer's parents? >From an affidavit on Charles passport, he list's his parents as John and Theresa Kreuzberg. That he then took the last name Kammer 3 years after the passing of his biological father, when his mother married his stepfather, Ignatz Kammer. What baffles us in our research is we cannot find much evidence that his biological father and mother even existed. 3.    Was Charles James Kammer as wealthy as everyone says he was? >From our research, we can verify he lived a higher standard of living then the average person. Charles owned the Toronto Hardwood Lumber Company. He has said to have thrown a large party, in a small community of Flinton, Ontario, during the 1930's. It was so extravagant, that the persons who attended this affair spoke of it for years after. He furnished my grandmother's home, with the most expensive furniture that money could buy. 4.    Did Charles James Kammer really have multiple wives? We can verify from our research, that Charles James Kammer was indeed married to at least 3 women at the same time. It is also possible that number could be as many as 5. When married to my grandmother, Charles made many trips to the USA. Perhaps to visit his first wife Kate, but we can only speculate. We know from relatives, that another wife [Anna] worked with him at his company, while married to my grandmother. We believe my grandmother knew about this women. 5.    After his company went bankrupt in June 1933, was he really destitute as he says he was? Charles James Kammer moved back to the USA after his bankruptcy in Canada, leaving my grandmother and my father behind. He went back to the USA, with the promise, that when he established himself again, he would come back for them. He wrote my grandmother on a regular basis, even sending money. In his letters, he mostly talked about despair. What is most baffling, he lived in some of the most prestige Hotels of their time. 6.    It is rumoured the possibility that Charles James Kammer worked for the American government. Is this true, or purely just a rumour? A story was told by immediate family, that on a trip to Nicaragua, Charles was held captive along with two others for reasons unknown. They however, escaped and made it back to New Orleans. Though Charles was a known Lumber salesmen/manager, did he also have his hand in something else?
