You may also want to visit the local library, and/or genealogy society if they have one. As a professional researcher, I am always of the opinion that the county seat in which the folks lived, is always the best place to research. They will have all of the county records there. The County seat of Butler County is Hamilton, OH. Best of luck with your research. Rex Bertram www.digginbones.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have done all I can online. I am trying to get tips from people who have researched there as to where the best places are to go. I have heard conflicting reports as to whether I need to go to the city where my ancestors lived (Middletown, Butler county) vs. the capital city. Any information on where I should begin would be helpful. Thanks so much. ~Tracy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Plus, there may not even be an actual "certificate." Most early births were just recorded in a book. Are you sure you were ordering it from the correct place? I read somewhere that there are archives at Penn State and at UPenn but I never checked into either as they aren't very close to where I am. The local libraries don't have the old Kensington Dispatch (which then became the Daily Dispatch). Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Apparently her mother's biological mother's maiden name was Huniche or Hunicke, per the adoption papers (she has a copy of them). We believe her name was Ruth Hunicke, and she lived in the St. Louis area. Ruth Hunicke married Watson Shuster (Again, in St. Louis) right around WWI, and their child, named Ruth Violet Shuster, was born in 1918. The adoption papers show them giving custody of Ruth Violet (my MIL's mother) to Spaegenburgs of St. Louis in 1923. They believe this was related to family circumstances in the Great Depression, but just don't know the whole story. I've been able to find lots and LOTS of information on Watson Shuster -- he lived to be 100 and stayed in the St. Louis area his whole life. Actually, family rumor has it that he attended Ruth Violet's funeral when she died in the 1960's. This is so, so sad to me. Anyway, I've been able to trace the Shuster line all the way back to Germany, but I have dead-ended with Ruth (Hunicke/Huniche) Shuster's line. As many of you have mentioned you are related to Hunicke's from the St. Louis area, I was wondering if anyone had any more passed-down family information about Ruth, who would have likely been born around 1895-ish (give or take a few years), and married around 1915-1918, and gave birth in Oct. 1918. I know this is a longshot, but I figured it didn't hurt to ask. It would mean a lot to my MIL if I could decode some of this "missing history" for her, and I'd like to know for my husband and kids, too! Thanks. He said he was born 22 Feb 1893 in Pittsburgh, lived at 1835 Fourth Ave., in Arnold, Westmoreland Co. PA and worked for the post office there. His nearest relative was his wife, Mildred. There is one George Simon born on that date that died in February 1972, possibly in New Kensington, PA. I would suggest you contact the local library for a copy of George's obit. Some libraries also have newspaper files. There is a website that is also searchable. I do not remember the name of it off hand. I have looked for information for over 40 years, it is not just a quick lookup! You may also want to contact a Historical society in the area where the family lived. I have purchased some wonderful files from them. Not everything I have received has been useful, but it is still interesting reading! Many newspaper files have been destroyed, so there are sometimes gaps in the information. I am still looking for an obituary for my great grandfather and one of his daughters. My great grandmother died after he did and before her daughter, but I was able to get her obituary. Never give up! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
