All the information I have is he was born 5 July 1871 in Newark, Licking, Ohio. I only have record of his mother as Maragret Clark. I would imagine she was born around 1850 /- I do not know if she married ?Stone or just gave him his last name. John moved to California where he married my grandmother, Mary Maragret Mazur from Alaska. They had 5 children. Any help or ideas of where to look from here would be greatly appreciate. Thank you, Darline Mason (Darline4x4) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jerusha28 Surnames: Matteson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.unknown/2761.3796/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Mary, I did read somewhere where the name of Ice was the name of a young girl captured by the creeks and taken away from them by the shawnee. This article I read said Tecumseh's father married her and had Tecumseh. They said her name was Margaret Ice (spelling different then). I can't remember where I read it. Maybe it was yours. Not sure. Anyway, I am so stumped on our line as it only goes back to Wm. Tecumseh Matteson b. 1825 Ohio. The 1850 census is the first one where we see him and it's in Pike Co. Indiana. That's where they died and are buried. Wm. T. married Sarah J. Arnold. We have the whole Arnold line probably back to when Arnolds first came to this country. The Matteson line right now is like we don't exist. My grandfather in the 60's told us he was told not to let anyone know we were Indian. This leaves me to guess that we were part of the group of Shawnee that hid so they didn't have to go on the trail of tears. That means that nothing will show up on! any of the rolls. I do know there are Matteson's on those rolls but don't know if any are directly related. Charlene Thomas Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The main problem with that format is that the issues are difficult to browse, and the main obituaries that can be found seem to be classified obituaries rather than simple death notices. 3. If you want obits, you can also go to the Cleveland Public Library on Google (I hate copying URL's, sorry) and click on Necrology Files. They have obits from the Cleveland Plain Dealer and those from the now defunct Cleveland Press from the 1800's forward. Being from Cleveland is a great asset if you like genealogy. The marriage index at the superior court is also fabulous. All genealogists should thank Cleveland and try to get other states and areas to follow suit.
