I did find a reference to a Mary M Young last night in a Warren county obit on an Indiana archives site. It said she was born in Greene county OH in 1826 and that her parents were Samuel & Elizabeth (if I remember right)Brown & that they had moved to Warren county around 1830. Too early to be your family, but you might want to check out those names to see if you can find any connections. Also, if I was tracking the correct Samuel & Isabelle (Warren to Miami to Fulton counties) it looks most likely that Samuel &, probably your William if they were siblings, were both born in Ohio. Good luck in your search! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: rbollmer1 Surnames: Brown, Steadman, Moden, Weaver, Keene Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.unknown/13551.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a similar problem with my own family. Our local probate court has put many of their early records online, guardianship papers included. That is why I suggested looking for those. You might also find a will, either from the Brown's or the Weaver's. Unfortunately, there are very few counties with records online. I did check for both Brown and Weaver genealogies on the archives site and the genealogicalbooklinks site, but found nothing which looked like a match for you. I also checked the county histories for Fountain & Warren on the county genweb sites. I thought he might have been mentioned as you said he was running a mill. Again nothing. The only thing I did find was an index listing Phillip & Mariam (Keene) Weaver marriage in or near Providence RI on 3/29/1812, on the familysearch site. This would seem to match your Weaver family. If you are not close enough to visit the counties you might try posting queries on the county boards for both Fountain and Warren IN to see if anyone can tell you about county records or do look-ups for you. I am assuming you have already posted on the 4 surname boards (Brown, Weaver, Steadman, Moden) but if not you might also try that. The third thing to try is to contact the genealogical societies for the two IN counties to request look-ups. I ruled out Iowa from the 1850 census because it looked like the enumerator used Ia for the state abbreviation for Indiana. (Remember there were no standardized state abbreviations in 1850.) There were way too many people on the same page with the Ia for state of birth to suppose that everyone in that part of Indiana had been born in Iowa. I would say that it would be historically improbable at the least. Most settlers did not go west then come back east, although it is possible that children might have been sent back after the death ! of the parents. Just not likely considering the whole of the census page. I did rule out the William A whose father owned the hotel. That family was listed in the biography section in one of the county history books I read. His birth year was very close to that of your Wm R., but I could find no relationship between the two families. You cannot rule out OH as a place of birth, but in the absence of available state birth records and without knowing the county, it is almost impossible to find your Wm R. Brown's birth if it was in OH. There are a couple other websites which I will check to see if anything has been posted which looks like a match. They are less reliable, but might have something to help. As you have found, many do not thoroughly research before adding to a family tree or other website, but they may lead to new information. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jeannesanbell Surnames: Brown Moden Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.unknown/13551.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you so much for taking an interest. I am not absolutely sure about any census other than the 1870 where Wm R. was married to Venia Moden ( for that, I have the marriage record). He was running a saw/lumbar mill with a Samuel M. Brown, which I can only assume was a brother or close cousin. Also, on a 1900 census has Wm's. son, Elmer, living with Sam's son Evander/Everton and their relation was stated as "cousin". The trouble is William Brown is a common name and easily confused with others of the same age. On the 1850 census, with the Weavers, Wm. and a Samuel were about the right age and in the county of Warren, where he was living in a later census. I, too, questioned on that census the birth place of Wm. and still questioning if it was Ohio, Indiana,or Iowa. The 1860 census says Indiana. Do you think 2 out of 3 and I should look in Indiana? The records are so sparse and confusing that every name connected with his just brings more question than answers. The Weavers, in 1850, had a Martha, 20, who I thought was a daughter living with them, older than Wm. or Sam. So, I assumed Miriam wasn't Wm. or Sam's mother as she had children with the name "Weaver" born before the two of them and therefore married to Phillip before there were born. There is a Philip Weaver is on the 1840 census, but it doesn't list names of children. I'm sure they are a relatives but I'm not sure how. I can find anything more on them. I do know Wm. must have died some time between the conception of his daughter, my ancestor, Lizzie Brown, in early 1873 and Venia's remarriage to Wallace Steadman in 1879. I also believe he would have been buried in the township he lived and that this is his resting place. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=35835724. The stated relations on this memorial do not make any sense to me. Wm. could not be Donie's father because Donie was conceived nearly 20 years after he died. Impossible in the 1800's. And Samantha Brown was still alive and living with her Wm. Brown on a turn of the century census. My explanation is better but still unproven. So, how would I go about finding guardianship papers? I know the county he lived in, would they still have these records? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: rbollmer1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.unknown/13552.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, it all matches except that his birthyear is off by 1. Mother born in Cincinnati (I did find 2 Daly/Ryan marriages,a Mary & a Mary Celia Ryan), young John was born in Chicago Oct, 1894 (from 1900 census) & John C was born in Chicago Oct, 1893 from death certificate. Curious as to where the informant (Sullivan?) got the information, but there's usually something a bit off on death certificates, especially from that time period. John J was born in a different month (don't remember which one but I think it was June?) and born in OH, and your family seemed pretty well established in Chicago by that time. What I didn't find is whether Mary or Mary Celia was the mother of John C, and I didn't find a death or remarriage for Mary that was a match. There was a Mary Daly died 1919 also buried in Mt Olivet, but not much information on the death record, and I think the age was off. Might be worth checking the cemetery if you haven't. Also, you might try posting a query on the Hamil! ton county board. There are some pretty resourceful people who regularly help out on that board. Some has already done a search on them and came up with Mary Ryan. Ryan and Barrett are both Irish surnames, as were her parents. You are spot on with the rest of the info. it is the correct family. It seems that John the son died in his 20's in Ohio. I know that Thomas was the last survivor. He was still alive in 1928. I could not track him down in the 1930 census. I did find the same name, with very little other details, apart from him being a brass polisher if I am correct. He had a major difficulty with his back and would have been pushed to the fringe of society because of it. It had been mentioned in a letter from the time. I would just hope that he didn't have a difficult life as he was the last of the family in Chicago. Thanks again Din. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: rbollmer1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.unknown/13553.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I actually did a first name search on the familysearch site trying to find this Sumner in other censuses. There really aren't that many, maybe 2 or 3 pages in any given state. Not what I would consider common, but not specific to any one family either that I could find. This was the only reference to a Sumner Lett that came back for my search, which led me to think that it was Charles S. I also did a search for Lett/Sumner marriages but couldn't find anything. The other family I would check out is that of Aquilla Lett who was enumerated on the previous page of the 1880 census. I think he was born OH and may have been an uncle (that's if this Sumner is your Charles S). The interesting thing is that he had a son Stanley. Stanley was not that common of a name either.
