The 1910, 1920, and 1930 federal census records for California show a Thomas L. McDougall and his wife living in California. In 1910 they are living in Los Angeles. In 1920 and 1930 they are living in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, California. He was apparently born in Ohio in 1877 and his father's birthplace is listed as Scotland. Could he be an older brother who was given the name of the father? Two potential problems, however. First, his name is given as McDougall as opposed to MacDougall (Mc vs. Mac). Second, his mother is listed on two occasions as being from Kentucky and on another from Ohio. This is quite different from something as specific as "Irish free state." Doing a quick check of other Mc/MacDougall's born in Ohio in California from 1920-1930 yields a few other names but none that seem to come close to fitting. 2. In 1920 widower John Adams and his daughter Rose E. Adams both of New York are living in Precinct 45 of Los Angeles. This is obviously Rose and her father (although their birth years are clearly incorrect.) Arthur is not listed with them. Presumably he must be living in the general area of Los Angeles as you noted above. My best guess then would be a misspelling of MacDougall or perhaps a career that took him out of the state causing him to miss the enumeration. That might be a bit of a stretch until you consider that the 1924 voter registration record for Precinct 91 indicates that he was a "conductor." Presumably this means a railway conductor? Would that explain why he isn't found in the other records? In 1930 he is now listed as a restaurant owner. Got tired of being on the rails away from his wife? As I said, I hope this isn't misleading, but when all else fails... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The 1930 Federal census, the California Death Index and his California Marriage license list him as born in Ohio. I have no idea what city/county it might be. The info I have so far: California Death Index states - DOB 4 Oct 1876 in Ohio DOD 3 Mar 1954 in Los Angeles, California California Marriage License - married 3 Mar 1920 to Rose Eleanor Adams but lists his age as 39 yrs. which would make his DOB abt 1881 not 1876. His parents are listed as - Thomas MacDougall b. in Scotland and (unknown) Malone b. in Ireland. The 1930 census is the only one I have been able to locate him in so far. It gives his age then as 49 yrs making his DOB abt 1881 again. Father listed as b. in Scotland and mother in Irish Free State (Ireland). I haven't been successful in finding him (or his parents) in the 1900, 1910 or 1920 census either living in Ohio or California. Obviously, he must have been living in California to get married there in 1920. I don't know if he moved to California as an adult or if the family moved there when he was still a child. I was hoping that someone on the Ohio message board might have some suggestions about where to go from here. Are there any state/local Ohio records available online that I could search? Smith, according to three separate census records in his adult life, was apparently born about 1823-1826 somewhere in Ohio. One record claimed that his father was from New York and that his mother was from Pennsylvania. His birthplace, middle name (possibly Albert, see below), parents names and any siblings are unknown to me. It seems likely that he left for Oregon in the late 1840's/early 1850's, and the best guess would be 1852. On February 6th, 1853 he married a Missouri native, Sarah Jane Prouty who was born in Livingston County, Missouri about 1838 and had also arrived in 1852. The marriage was not officially recorded, but was noted in an April 1853 issue of the New York Times. They lived in Umpqua (now Douglas) county at the time of the 1860 census, and in Calapooia at the time of the 1870 census before leaving for eastern Washington State around 1872/73 where they are found in Farmington, Whitman County in 1880. They had twelve children. A date or location of death for James or his wife has not yet been found, nor has any hint of where he was located before going to Oregon. Following up on some of his children has yielded no clues so far. The problems inherent in looking for someone with the name "James Smith" are obvious so I am left to ask whether any of the more experienced members of this board would have any suggestions as to where I might beginning looking to find a clue. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. In the meantime, I am left with speculating about a possible connection to the family of Archibald Smith (thought to be born in Virginia, not New York) and Hannah Ashcraft (who was born in Pennsylvania). There are some known facts about their son Johnathan B. Smith (1816-1895) that are eerily similar to that of James A. Smith. While there are no known children named James among Hannah and Archibald's children, there is an interesting five year gap between the birth of their fourth and fifth children (Catherine, b. 1822 & Samuel, b. 1827), both of whom appear to have been born in Ohio. While this may be the result of normal circumstances, or perhaps the loss of an unknown infant/child, it opens the possibility of their being another child being born during this period. In the late 1830s (1839?), Archibald apparently moved his family to Mercer County, Missouri. He may have also owned land just to the south in Livingston County, Missouri. This was coincidentally the birthplace of James A. Smith's future wife, Sarah Jane Prouty. By 1850 or earlier, Archibald's son Johnathan B. Smith was found to be living in Iowa with his own family. 1850 also finds Sarah Jane Prouty now living in Iowa with her mother, siblings and step-father, albeit some miles from where Johnathan Smith was living. James A. Smith is not found to be living with Johnathan Smith in Iowa in the 1850 census, and by 1852 is living in Oregon. By the 1860s, Johnathan Smith had also moved his family to Oregon. Interestingly, he had a son named James A. Smith, the "A" being for Albert. Like the James A. Smith of my search, he also had a son named William and a daughter named Mary Jane. Even more compelling is the fact that like James A. Smith, Johnathan Smith and his family eventually left Oregon for eastern Washington, settling in the town of St. John, Whitman County, just to the west of Farmington, Whitman County where James A. Smith and his family resided. Johnathan and his wife Melvina McKee Smith are buried in Pine cemetery, Whitman, Washington. Coincidence? Quite possibly. With no known records tying James A. Smith to any specific person or location in Ohio, and no clues to where he lived before 1825 and 1853, I can only speculate. Hi Mel - Thank you. I was hoping to learn more about your Gray line. I think I have nailed mine down in Botetourt and Greenbrier Counties, VA - at least that seems the most likely to extend my family here in Ohio back to Virginia. He is George Gray who m. 1778 to Mary Davis or Davies, dau of Joseph Davis/Davies. Lived in Greenbrier for many years, don't know where he died, but she may have left an estate in Montgomery Co., VA. I have my John Gray 1785-1855 b. VA, m. Sep 1816 Monroe Co., migrated with the James Thompson family to the Cincinnati area and then on to Clark Co., OH before settling in Union Co., OH. Anything familiar? In the Canada immigration records, there is a Lillian E. Lawrence returning to Canada from a vist to England in 1934. There is an Ida E. Bate, who is on the same ship, and lists the same home address on Greenwood street in Toronto. I also found a birth for an Ida Bate, parents Joseph Bate and Bertha Stephens Rush in Ontario. In the 1901 census, the family is listed in Equesing, Halton County Ontario. Lillian is listed as being 25, which is off for her reported birthdate, but it seems to be the right person.
