    1. [OHIO] HELP: Searching for a Hellmann or Heldman family from Ohio!
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: wlkernan1977 Surnames: Hamilton, Hellmann, Heldman Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.unknown/12981/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, I am looking for details on my great grandfather. He was known in our family as "Harry Carl Hamilton," born Oct 15, 1891 in Ohio, possibly in Harrison County or Canton. According to oral history, Harry was not born a Hamilton, but assumed it as his last name, after leaving his wife and two children (possibly a boy, named "Buddy", and a girl) in Ohio. As the story goes, he got into a bar fight, which resulted in the man being killed. Not wanting to go to prison, he fled the state. This all took place before 1933, when he married Goldia Worthington in Arkansas in that year. According to Goldia, he was the son of a William and Nellie. Their surname, however, is not clear. According to Goldia, it was either "Hellmann" or "Heldman." He may, moreover, have gone by just Carl. I have tried search for him on census records and have had no luck. I did find ONE match on the WWI Draft Registration Card Index: a man named "Carl Heldman" born 15 Oct 1891 in Ohio. This man, however, was in the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City when he filled out this draft card. According to oral history, Harry Carl served in WWI, possibly as a cook. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, William Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I just love those old pictures! The one that caught my attention was the Daniel Lightfoot who had moved from Baltimore to Cumberland Co., PA. This was the same places and time frame for the Penn family. I have Penn women for whom I haven't found spouses, so maybe we'll find out something one way or another. Of course Quakers married Native Americans. I've been saying here that Shadrach Penn married Jennie, daughter of Tecumseh. Shadrach was William Penn's great-grandson and very much a Quaker. I'm going to have to look a little further into these Lightfoots from Virginia. Those ones that moved to Baltimore. I know how hard those old censuses can be to read sometimes and the fact that the 1790 Census only lists the Head of Household almost always doesn't help matters much, does it? At this time frame, the Penns literally owned Baltimore and were doing their level best to get people to move out onto the frontier, which at that time meant western ! Pennsylvania. My Shadrach Penn was already in southern Ohio. Maybe there's no relationship physically but there had to have been some sort of connection even if it was a close friendship for a certain Penn to have entrusted Mr. Lightfoot with the Penn book intended for Shadrach Penn in Ohio. I also read on the website that you posted where some had to live at the poor house for a while. Perhaps one of them fell ill while there and spent some time at the Penn Hospital in Baltimore? I saw a list of patients living there under the 1790 Census. While I never saw a Lightfoot, there may be another connection that I'm not aware of. I'm the type who just doesn't know enough to quit. My tombstone will probably read, "She left no stone unturned". LOL Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I thought it was a strong possibilty as I stated or perhaps he was closely related somehow to them. Maybe he was a father-in-law or something. Because he did own the family book for a while before handing it on to Shadrach Penn. And there's also the possibilty that he only knew the Penn family very well. As he lived along the Monogahela In PA, this would have placed him between Shadrach Penn(living in southern Ohio) and his family back in Baltimore. Yes, both men and women Quakers married into the Iroquois Confederacy. Not all of them, of course. My local Amish and Mennonite neighbors know this and highly revere William Penn, as you may well imagine. There are many records indicating these marriages and they are quite easily found. Even drawings (prior to photographing) depicts such marriages. As I also stated, the Quakers were considered "human beings" by the local Indians as they were civilized people. They bartered and worked together.! They taught one another new things. And well, the Quakers being a land-loving people knew that if one of their children were to marry into a particular tribe, land would not be an issue. The tribes also offered protection against more (shall we say "spirited") whites, the government (who were still suspicious of the Quakers) and warring native Nations. William Penn himself highly condoned these marriages. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. His name was Henry Lightfoot and he lived along the Monogahela in Pennsylvania at the time. He did not put down the year that he received it, however. I received the book on my 50th birthday which is usually the custom in our family. And I don't know if he married a Penn but if he didn't, he most definitely knew them well. The book was owned by my double gggg-grandfather, Shadrach Penn, following Mr. Lightfoot's ownership of it. The book by design was for the descendants of William Penn only, which is why he wrote it in the first place. I do believe that Mr. Lightfoot was married to a Miss Penn or was in some way closely related. I just haven't checked him out. The Penns are well known for having been Quakers and they did not indulge in anti-Indian behaviors that were the norm at that time. They often married Native Americans. 1. [OHIO] Foster- Ohio to Mississippi (1830s and 1840s)
    2. John Patrick Quinn (Seán Pádraig Ó Cuinn)
    3. Hello! I am interested in a group of men named Foster who were likely brothers. They migrated to Hinds and Warren Counties in the late 1830s. They appear to have originated in Ohio; however, the family was likely had been in Virginia and Kentucky prior to moving into Ohio. My ancestor was John J. Foster who was born sometime between 1820-1825 and died in Hinds County 1843-1847. He first appeared in Hinds Co., MS in 1838 when he served as bondman for the marriage of William Foster (b. 1810, VA, d. 1850, Hinds Co., MS) to Sarah Jane Lee. This William was likely his brother. Other possible brothers were Claudius B. Foster (b. 1816, KY) and Ralph Foster (b. 1822 OH, d. after 1850, Vicksburg, MS). One possible clue to the origins of this family is that Samuel Guthrie (Guttery) (b. 1817, OH, d. aft 1880, MO ) served as bondsman when John J. Foster and Elizabeth Clark were married in Hinds Co., MS in 1840. Since there are several indicators that the Fosters may have been from Ohio and with Samuel Guthrie (Guttery) serving as bondman, I have often wondered if there was a connection between these families. Any help will be most appreciated. John Patrick Quinn Houston, TX
