John SLATER 9 Sep 1856. Book 1, Page 62. (You could write Probate Court, Huron County Courthouse, 2 East Main St., Norwalk, OH 44857 to see if they could provide a copy of this marriage record.) 2. 1870 Census Index, Huron County, Ohio. The following SLATERs are listed for census page 278, Fairfield Township. Read first name, age, and place of birth. John, 59, CT Isabel, 48, Canada West Richard, 12, OH Franklin, 10, OH. 2.1880 Census Index, Huron County, Ohio. John SLATER, Fairfield Twp, 032. 3. Death Index, 1867-1908, Huron County, Ohio. John SLATER d. 09/30/1887. Vol. 1, Page 134. 4. History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879. Page 96. Roster of Soldiers, Civil War. In list of Privates, assigned Co. B, 123rd O.V.I.: John SLATER, transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps (records lost). 5. History of Huron County, Ohio, by A.J. Baughman, 1909. Page 543. Biographical sketch on Richard T. SLATER. This item mentions that Richard T. SLATER was born 17 Aug 1857 in North Fairfield, Ohio. His parents were John and Isabelle (CROW) SLATER. John was a native of Connecticut, while Isabelle was a native of Quebec, Canada. John SLATER, the father, was a blacksmith by trade, which trade he practiced in North Fairfield. He was 52 years old when he enlisted in the Union Army--and served for three years in Co. B, 123rd O.V.I. He was captured twice by the enemy, and imprisoned at Andersonville, and also at Belle Isle. Eventually, he was exchanged in both cases. He died in 1887 at age 77, and buried in the North Fairfield cemetery. Isabelle, his wife, died 28 Sep 1908 and was buried at New Buffalo, Michigan. 6.
