In attempting to break down a brick wall I am looking for the marriage name of my gg-grandfather's sister. This could prove to be a problem. All I know is that her first name was listed as Carrie in a bio about her sister and brother-in-law. So I guess possible given names could be Catherine, Caroline, or Carolyn, or maybe it's just Carrie. The last name could also be confusing. It seems my family spelled it different every time they wrote it. Schenk, Schank, Shank and I have recently seen it as Schenck. If anyone could see if they could find Carrie's marriage, I would greatly appreciate it! Mary (Shank) Smith >> Hi Mary, I found a few bits and pieces regarding a Carrie/Caroline Shank in our Huron County, Ohio publications which might or might not relate to your Shank (& variations) family. In our Huron County, Ohio Marriages by Scheuer Publications I find : Caroline Shank m. Andrew Howk 24 April 1866, Book 2, Page 9. I couldn't find anything else on Andrew Howk, except I did find a Jacob Howk listed as a Blacksmith for Company I, 3rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (page 108, Roster of Soldiers, Civil War, History of the Firelands, by W. W. Williams, 1879). You also mention seeing a Carrie (Shank) in a bio about her sister and brother-in-law. This might be the same as the reference you cite, but in our History of Huron County, Ohio by A.J. Baughman, 1909, I see in Volume 2, Page 348, a biographical sketch on Mathias Claus which refers to the Shank family, including Carrie Shank. The bio mentions that Mathias married Josephine Shank 2 Jan 1867. Josephine was the daughter of Frank and Helen Shank of Sherman Township. Josephine was born in Germany 14 Feb 1846 and came to America with her father at age 18. They settled in Norwich Township where the father died at age 75. The mother had died in Germany years before at age 42. Frank and Helen Shank were parents of six children, four of whom were still living as of 1909. The two oldest sons, Frank and Benjamin, died earlier. Of the others, Elias lives in Norwich Township; Josephine is the wife of Mathias Claus; Carrie is living in Fremont and Agnes in Tiffin. To follow up the above, in our Atlas of 1873 for Huron County, Ohio, there is listed the following property owners: B. Shank (possibly Benjamin??), Norwich Twp, page 29, section 3, lot 22. E. Shank (possibly Elias??), Norwich Twp, page 29, section 3, lots 11 & 12. F. Shank, Jr. (possibly Frank, Jr.??). Our Atlas of 1891 for Huron County, Ohio shows: Frank Shank, Norwich Twp, page 31, section 3, lots 22, 12, 13, & 30. Regards, Ken Shute P.S. I was just getting ready to send this when your update on the Shank family came in. Looks like we have a match (Baughman's). Our 1891 Atlas shows an Elry Shenk owning property in Norwich: page 31, section 3, lots 10, 11, & 12).
