I am related to the Phillips family through Andsell whose widow is buried in the Boughton Cemetery (P.709 of the Huron Co. Cemetery Inscriptions Publications). As a matter of information, Andsell is buried in an unmarked grave in the Cedar Creek Cemetery, Hope Twp., Barry Co., MI. He died while visiting relatives in the area. My question is as to Andsell's ancestry - is he related to Ezekiel, the pioneer? Also, are the other Phillips in that cemetery related? Any suggestions or assistance is appreciated. Charles O. Harthy coh55@dmci.net >> Hi Charles, In checking our Huron County, Ohio publications it appears that there was the Ezekial Phillips family living in Hartland Twp, and the Andsell Phillips family (apparently) living in Norwich Twp. I was unable to find a definite connection between these two families. The Andsell Phillips Family: In our Cemetery Inscriptions book we find, on page 710, Boughton Cemetery, Norwich Twp: Mercy Phillips, w/o Andsell Phillips, d. 22 Dec 1854 age 68y 9m. Also on page 710, same cemetery: Section A-- Row 6. 6 Ruth Phillips, d/o L. & E. Phillips, d. 1 Jul 1839 age 16d. 7 John Phillips, d. 27 Feb 1844 age 44y 8m 13d. Electa, w/o John Phillips, d. 3 Aug 1843 age 37y 9m 1d. The foregoing named Phillips members could very well be related to Andsell & Mercy Phillips, based on the proximity of their burial locations, but I could find nothing else to confirm this. Our Early Estate Index of Huron County, Ohio Court Records, 1812-1852, lists a John Phillips, Estate, Dec 1844. Sources: Probate Docket #1; p. 222. Common Pleas Journal #8, p. 119. Packet (original papers which still exist). If this John Phillips is the same as the John Phillips listed on page 710 of the Cemetery Inscriptions book, and if you could obtain these documents, it might shed further light on the relationship between John and Andsell. Ancestry.com gives the pedigree for an Ansel Foster Phillips, going back to Ansel (Andsell) Phillips and Mercy Draper. Ansel Foster Phillips was b. 10 Oct 1869 in Huon County, Ohio. He d. 30 Jun 1927 in Rutland Twp, Barry County, Michigan (the same county you mentioned where Andsell Phillips was buried while visiting relatives in the area). Ansel Foster Phillips m. Margaret Alvira Smith. Parents of Ansel Foster were Alvin Eugene Phillips and Delia Gertrude Snyder. Parents of Alvin Eugene were Nathaniel Phillips and Nancy Ann Deyos. Parents of Nathaniel were Ansel (Andsell) Phillips and Mercy Draper. Ancestry.com also gives the following under War of 1812 Service Records: Andsell Phillips, Batt'n Light Inf., New York Mil. Rank at Induction: Fifer. Rank at Discharge: Fifer. The Ezekial Phillips Family. Ezekial and Maria Smith Phillips had nine children, five of whom were still living in 1879. Of the nine children, the daughters' names included Alma, Abi, Harriet, Amy, Almira, and Dorcas; the sons' names included Phriend and Canarius (the yougest). In our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879, we read that Ezekial Phillips came to Hartland Twp from Ontario County, NY in 1830. He died in Hartland in July 1856. His widow (Maria) lived with her son-in-law Parley K. Post. She died Oct. 1, 1877 at age 87. Five of their nine children were still living in 1879: Mrs. Post (Amy) in Hartland; Mrs. Hoppock (Alma) and Mrs. Burgess (Almira) in Wisconsin; Mrs. John Clawson (Dorcas) in Clarksfield (Twp?); and C.N. in Michigan. In Henry Timman's Just Like Old Times (JLOT), Book 3, Page 60 we find an article that mentions the triple wedding of Alma, Abi, and Harriet Phillips on Sept. 4, 1837. They were the chldren of Ezekial and Maria Phillips who settled in 1830 at the "Hartland Five Points" in Hartland Twp. Alma married Daniel D. Hoppock, Abi married Robert Gribben, and Harriet married Eben Stone. Abi died a year after her marriage at age 23 and is buried with her parents. The Hoppocks later moved to Wisconsin. Also In JLOT, Book 4, Page 32, there is mention of the youngest son of Ezekial and Maria Phillips named Canarius. He came to Hartland Twp from Greene County, NY in 1831. He joined many other settlers of the area in the 1849 gold rush in California. He married Alzina James of Hartland Ridge. They had no children. Canarius died in 1909. Our Cemetery Inscriptions book lists the following in Five Points Cemetery (also known as the Phillips Cemetery) in Hartland Twp. Page 190. 6 Abi Gribben, w/o Robert Gribben, d/o Ezekial & Mariah Phillips, d. 1 Jul 1838 age 23y 4m 18d. 7 George W. I don't know how much of the above you already have, but maybe it can serve as a famework for further research as to whether there's any connection or not between the two families.
