I think this is becoming more and more common. There are people out there who are not very honest and don't care. There are people who steal documents from public holdings. There will always be great discussion on what is public domain and what is not. Ask any long time genealogist how many times he has shared info, in the form of mailed packages to other researchers, and gotten zip in return. No postage reimbursement, no thank you, nada. It happens Read the articles in RootsWeb Review about the mega gedcoms on worldconnect. Come on now, does anyone have 96,452 names in their family tree? My tree of 27 years now has 7,000 give or take in it. Did the file owner do this research, or did he cut and paste from the Internet. Some people feel important to have the biggest, the best, the most. And will get it anyway they can. And to be the first to put it on line, accurate, appropriate or not. My grandparents "life story" is on line. An extremely distant relative visited my parents regarding the family. Nice visit. I then found the info on line. What a sleazy article. My grandfather was an alcoholic, my grandmother abused her children. My parent has 18 half sisters!!!!! Not one of those sentences is true. The author even got spouting religion. My parent was devastated. We have no clue where this person came up with this junk!! Letters and email to the author of this fiction of course are ignored. Rootsweb cannot do anything about it. So not only are we careful about sharing, we are careful about who we talk to and what we tell them. What a terrible way to live!!! So, having sort of been in your shoes, I have become most careful who I share with and what I share. Sometimes defeats the purpose of why we are doing this, but you just have to protect yourself and most of all live with your actions. I do both quite well. In the end, each one must decide what do I share, and what do I keep to myself? For me, if it is info that is ok to post on the front page of the USA today, then it can be shared. If I do not want it on the front page of the newspaper, it stays in my files. Experience is sometimes a tough way to learn. Just my opinion. gypsy Subject: [OHHURON-L] Question - Posting Info On-line without Permission? Hello List Members, I have a question for everyone and would like your feedback. A few days ago, I came across information that was posted on the Huron County Web site by a List Member. I hired a private German researcher last year to research a family and sent the "List Member" a copy of the results. He agreed to help with the costs of the research ahead of time, but never sent me any money. Was he wrong for posting the information without getting my permission -- am I wrong to question what he did?
