They were to be recorded in the probate court of the county where the event took place. Many of these early birth and death records are available on microfilm. In December 1908, the registration of birth and death certificates (previously kept in ledger books, not as certificates) moved to the county/local health departments as well as the state health department. One copy was kept locally, another set held by the state. Hope this helps. Amy Johnson Crow.
